External mastic in Rhu
Getting the depth right is half the job. Closed-cell backing rod sets the depth and stops the sealant sticking to the back, so it bonds to the two sides only and can stretch. Typical jobs include sealant that has lost its bond to the brick or render and hard, crazed mastic that has stopped moving, across copings & trims, joints between brick and frames and render & cladding joints.
Outside joints can only be sealed when they’re dry, so work in Rhu depends on the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Let us know about access to every wall and roofline.
You’re covered for a year from the day we finish. If anything is not right with it, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Why deal with it now?
Water gets in through a failed movement joint, behind render and cladding. Resealing early keeps the job to the joint itself, rather than the wall around it. Around Rhu, water from a failed joint in an older stone home can soak into timber and plaster.
There are no prices on our website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a quick quote and we will talk you through it.

What affects the cost of external mastic
There’s no set price list, because jobs vary so much. The quote depends on:
- Which sealant suits the joint
- The old material and how stubborn it is
- How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
- Whether there’s mould to deal with
Leaving a failed joint normally makes the job bigger, not smaller, as water and mould keep getting in. If you are not sure whether it needs doing, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you an honest view and a quote.
Asking for a quote
When you call or email, it’s useful to know:
- Any previous sealing or DIY work
- The type of property
- The problem you’ve noticed
- How many joints, rooms or windows are involved
If you are in Rhu and need external mastic, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk. A short description of the job and where it is helps us quote, and we will agree the price before any work begins.
When it is not the sealant
In fairness, there are a few things sealant won’t fix:
- Damp from another source, such as a leaking gutter or a bridged damp-proof course
- Cutting new joints into brickwork, which is building work rather than sealant work
- Cracked brickwork or render that needs a builder or plasterer
If you are not sure, just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.
Surfaces we seal
- Copings & trims
- Concrete & block
- Render & cladding joints
- Joints between brick and frames
- Brickwork movement joints
- Façade panels
Keeping the joints in good condition
After the cure time, these simple habits help:
- Make sure movement joints aren’t pointed over
- Wash walls gently around the sealant
- Check the sealant is paintable before painting near it
- Keep water from gutters off the wall
Do not paint over the new sealant unless we’ve said the product is paintable. Paint can crack on a flexible joint and spoil the finish.
Leaks behind façade panels and render often go unseen. By the time there’s a damp patch, the damage can be well established so early resealing is worth it.
FAQs for Rhu
Will you come out to Rhu?
Yes. Rhu is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Does living near the coast affect external mastic in Rhu?
Near the coast, wind-driven rain and, nearer the shore, salt air make outside sealant work harder. Choosing the right sealant for the frame and wall, laid at the right depth, helps it last.
How long does external mastic last?
It varies from wall to wall: sunny, exposed elevations and busy joints wear faster. A yearly look will tell you when they need doing. Our work comes with a 12-month guarantee.
How long does external mastic take?
Typically it takes a few hours for a handful of joints, longer for a whole elevation. Larger jobs naturally take longer, and we’ll say how long yours will take.
Where are you based?
Mr Mastic is based in Crawley. Our applicators cover Rhu, along with the rest of our area.
Do you have insurance?
Yes, we are fully insured.
How do I get a quote for external mastic in Rhu?
We don’t publish prices, because the cost depends on the job: how much there is, what’s there now, how we reach it and what it needs. You’ll get a clear quote before we start.
What information do you need?
Just the basics: where it is, what you’ve noticed and how we reach it. Then drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.
Should I try it myself first?
A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.
Not every job suits DIY: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs need the right product, the right access and the right method.
Walls and rooflines in Rhu
Rhu is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That’s hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, especially on the side facing the sea. With historic houses such as Hill House (about 1.9 miles east) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Rhu as well as newer homes. In older buildings, older brick and stone need a sealant that suits them, at the right joint depth.
For an older house near a landmark such as Rhu Parish Church, older walls, gutters and the joints where extensions meet them need a flexible sealant. If you look after a building such as Lomond School, movement joints, cladding joints and gutters on larger buildings need the same care as a house’s.

How the visit works
On the day, there’s very little for you to do. Show us the job and we’ll take it from there. The job generally takes a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access, including the tidy-up. Outside jobs in Rhu need a dry day, because sealant will not bond to a wet joint, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Work indoors isn’t affected.
- We start by checking each joint, agreeing the ones to redo and how we’ll reach them.
- Old sealant and any debris are cut and raked out.
- Both sides are cleaned back to sound material and primed if needed.
- Closed-cell backing rod is fitted to set the depth and stop three-sided bonding.
- We gun in a flexible exterior sealant in a colour that suits the wall and tool it neatly.
How to prepare
- Keep children and pets away from the work area
- For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can
- Mention any leaks or damp you’ve noticed
How to get a quote

Advice
When to call us in Rhu
Sometimes a movement joint was filled with mortar or a rigid filler. The joint can’t move, so the wall cracks somewhere else instead.
Most people get in touch after spotting something like this:
- Sealant pulling away from one side of the joint
- Failed seals between different materials
- Brick movement joints where the sealant has split
- Weeds or debris growing in open joints
Letting a property close to Helensburgh Upper station? Then outside joints that have cracked can let damp into a rental, so check them between lets.
What to look for in a quote
- How long the guarantee is
- What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
- What insurance they hold
- Who does the work, and how experienced they are
