Looking after it afterwards

To keep the joints looking good and working properly:

  • Give the silicone its full cure time
  • Never pick at the silicone with a blade
  • Keep the fan on for a while after bathing
  • Wipe the sealant dry after showering

Keep bottles and razors off the sealant line, because they trap water against the silicone. Squeegeeing the walls and tray after use keeps water from sitting on the joint.

Mould that starts as a few spots spreads through the bead. When it has grown right through, it rarely cleans out. Replacing the sealant early keeps the job small.

Can I do it myself?

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. Everything old must be removed first.

Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.

Why it’s worth doing now in Straiton

Running new silicone over the old joint can look tidy for a few weeks, but it can’t stick to what’s underneath. It lifts, traps water and grows mould behind it, and the next reseal means two layers to cut out. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.

What you pay reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we ask a few questions first.

Why us?

  • Any old sealant cut out fully, not covered over
  • White, clear, grey or coloured to suit, where the product allows
  • Experience in homes, commercial sites and hotels
  • Sanitary silicone with an anti-fungal additive in wet areas

Straiton questions

Will you come out to Straiton?

Yes, we do. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Is there a guarantee on bathroom resealing in Straiton?

All our work, in Straiton and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We are also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.

Can I do it myself?

For a simple, easy-to-reach joint, a careful DIYer can do a reasonable job. The usual mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using too much.

I’m a tenant. Can you help?

We are happy to deal with the tenant, landlord or agent. Just make sure your landlord agrees.

What sealant do you use?

Each joint gets the product that suits it. Where it moves, gets wet or faces the weather makes a difference, and we will explain our choice.

Do you hold any approvals?

Yes. We hold ARBOMaster approved applicator status.

Where is Mr Mastic based?

Our base is in Crawley, West Sussex, and we work across South East England, London and Scotland.

Is white the only colour available?

White and clear are the most common choices, but other colours can be used to suit tiles and worktops. Let us know your preference when you ask for a quote.

How the visit works

Every visit runs the same way: we check the joints, protect the area around them, do the work and tidy away. Most jobs take a couple of hours for one bath or shower, or most of a day for a full bathroom and kitchen. Outdoor work around Straiton depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Work indoors is not affected.

  1. We protect the area and cut out all of the old sealant.
  2. The joint is cleaned, degreased and treated for mould.
  3. Once it’s dry, any bath is filled so the bead is laid with it at its heaviest.
  4. New anti-fungal silicone goes on in a colour to suit and is tooled to a clean finish.
  5. Finally we tidy up and explain the cure time before we leave.

Before we arrive

  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before
  • Let us know about parking restrictions
  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children

Advice

When to call us in Straiton

Not every tube in the shop is meant for a shower. Decorators’ caulk and all-purpose sealants aren’t made for constant wetting, so they stain, crack or go mouldy before long. A bathroom joint needs anti-fungal sanitary silicone.

These are the problems we are asked about most:

  • Black spots spreading through the bead
  • Water getting behind the bath panel
  • Shrunken sealant along the back of a worktop
  • A reseal done over the top of the old bead

In the older streets around Straiton Parish Church, timber floors under older bathrooms flex, so joints need a sealant that moves with them.

Bathrooms and kitchens in Straiton

Private landlords in Scotland must be registered and meet the Repairing Standard, which covers keeping fixtures and fittings in a reasonable state of repair. Failed sealant around a bath or shower is worth sorting between tenancies. Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that does not dry out.

What affects the cost of bathroom resealing

We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:

  • The number and length of the joints
  • Whether there’s mould to deal with
  • Which sealant suits the joint
  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved

Instead of a standard rate, we look at what your job involves: the amount of work, the old material and the access. The price is agreed before we begin.

What we need to know

You don’t need to know the technical terms. It helps if you can tell us:

  • The address or postcode of the job
  • What’s wrong with the joints now
  • Any access issues, like height or stairs
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work

We do not publish a price list. Instead, we give you a clear quote for your job. To get started, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.
