Windows and doors in Hunters Quay

Hunters Quay is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. Both are hard on the mastic around older windows and doors, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Under the Repairing Standard, private landlords in Scotland have to keep homes wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that.

In the older streets around Kirn Church, frames set in older brick or stone need a sealant that suits the wall as well as the frame. Letting a property close to Gourock station? Then older sash windows in a rental need their mastic kept sound to keep the weather out.

Hunters Quay is about 3 miles west of Gourock, in Argyll and Bute. Hunters Quay gets the same service as everywhere we cover: old sealant removed completely, careful preparation and a one-year guarantee. Our Argyll and Bute coverage runs to 118 places, and Hunters Quay is one of them. For nearby work, see our Glasgow page, about 25 miles away.

We work across PA23 for sand mastic. Nearby, we also carry out sand mastic in Kirn (1 mile south-west), Dunoon (1 mile south-west), Strone (1 mile north), Sandbank (2 miles north-west) and Kilmun (3 miles north-west). How we handle sand mastic in Hunters Quay

Old sand mastic cracks, crumbles and falls out over time and gaps open up round the frame. We rake it out and renew it so the surround looks right again. If you have mastic that needs renewing before redecorating and a silicone bead on a sash window that spoils the look, we can put it right.

Outdoor sealant needs a dry surface, so window work around Hunters Quay is planned around the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Let us know about access to every frame, including any upstairs.

Whatever the size of the job, you get the same one-year guarantee in Hunters Quay and across Argyll and Bute.

When to call us in Hunters Quay

Scraping and sanding before painting can loosen old mastic. It’s often found when windows are being prepared for paint, which is a good time to renew it.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • Silicone on a period window that looks wrong
  • Failed mastic on an exposed elevation
  • Gaps between timber frames and stone or brick
  • Draughty sash windows at the surround

If you look after a building such as Kirn Primary School, the mastic around its windows and doors needs looking after like any other building’s.

Before you book anyone

  • How the colour is chosen
  • How long to leave it before use
  • How the surfaces are prepared before sealing

Choosing a sealant specialist

How it works

Our applicators work methodically: protection first, then preparation, sealing and a tidy-up. Typically it takes a few hours for a single window, longer for several and we leave things clean and tidy. In smaller Scottish places, parking is usually less of an issue than access and distance. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. First we agree which joints need doing.
  2. Old mastic and any loose material are raked out.
  3. Deep gaps are packed so the mastic sits at the right depth.
  4. The sand mastic is mixed and pressed into the joint by hand.
  5. The surface is finished to suit the stone or brick.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know about parking restrictions
  • Keep children and pets away from the work area
  • Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive

Questions from Hunters Quay

Will you come out to Hunters Quay?

Yes, Hunters Quay is covered. We work across all of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Does the coastal weather in Hunters Quay affect outside sealant?

Near the sea, outside joints face more wind, rain and salt than they would inland, so the choice of sealant and the preparation matter even more. It’s worth checking the walls that face the sea first.

Can I paint the new mastic?

Traditional guidance is not to paint over sand mastic. If you’re redecorating the window, ask us first and we will talk you through it.

Should I use sand mastic or silicone?

We’ll help you decide. Sand mastic suits many period homes, and modern sealants suit newer frames.

What do you put in the joint?

Quality sealants from brands including Arbo and Everbuild, picked for each joint. We’ll tell you what we are using and why.

Will the old sealant be removed?

Yes, always, and completely. New sealant won’t bond properly to old, so the joint is cleaned back first.

How long will you be here?

A typical job takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on how many windows. Your quote will say how long we expect yours to take.

What information do you need?

The location, the problem and the rough size of the job. Photos by email help too.

Looking after it afterwards

No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. A few tips:

  • Check the mastic when you check the paintwork
  • Ask us before painting near the mastic
  • Check with your local planning authority if your home is listed
  • Make sure water runs off the sill

Don’t touch or press the mastic while it hardens. It skins over quickly, but takes longer to harden fully.

Crumbling mastic lets rain into the joint. That water can reach the timber frame and the wall so early renewal protects both.

Can I do it myself?

Some jobs are best left to a professional: work at height, external movement joints, fire-rated sealant and large areas need the right product, the right access and the right method.

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.
