What sealant work cannot fix

To be straight with you, some problems need a different trade:

  • Cracked or broken tiles
  • Leaks from pipes, valves or wastes (a plumber’s job)
  • Waterproofing that has failed below the tiling

If you are not sure, just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.

How we handle regrouting in Veensgarth

Regrouting is generally paired with resealing. Grout belongs between tiles, but internal corners and edges flex, so they need flexible silicone instead. Doing both at once leaves the whole area sound. Typical jobs include splashback grout that has darkened and floor grout that has worn and darkened, across bathroom wall tiles, kitchen splashbacks and shower walls.

Bathrooms in smaller places like Veensgarth work just as hard as those in the cities. Limescale is less of a problem with Scotland’s generally soft water, but mould still takes hold in damp sealant and grout.

Whatever the size of the job, you get the same one-year guarantee.

Veensgarth homes and their sealant

Veensgarth is close to the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, and sealant and grout that work that hard wear out sooner. In Scotland, private landlords have to meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping fixtures and fittings in reasonable repair. Failed sealant around a bath or shower is worth sorting between tenancies.

Homes close to Tingwall Kirk include some older properties, and timber floors under older bathrooms flex, so joints need a sealant that moves with them.

Veensgarth is in the Shetland Islands. From the centre of Veensgarth to the outskirts, we cover regrouting for every kind of property, from flats and houses to offices and hotels. Our the Shetland Islands coverage runs to 63 places, Veensgarth among them.

All of ZE2 is covered for regrouting, from the main roads to the quietest streets. We cover properties on Vallafield, Herrislea Court and Herrisdale Park and the roads around them. Nearby, we also carry out regrouting in Gott (1 mile north-east), Gremista (2 miles east), Heogan (3 miles east), Lerwick (3 miles south-east) and Sound (3 miles south-east). Remote and island addresses need a little more planning, so please mention your location when you drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

The process

On the day, we look over the joints with you first, so you know exactly what we’re doing. Surfaces next to the work are protected before we start. The work normally takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room. For a place like Veensgarth, longer drives are planned in advance. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. Every tile area is checked for hollow or loose tiles first.
  2. We rake out the grout evenly, protecting the tile edges.
  3. We vacuum the joints so the new grout bonds.
  4. We regrout the joints and clean the tile faces.
  5. Silicone goes into the corners and along the edges.

Before we arrive

  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Mention any leaks or damp you’ve noticed
  • Let us know about stairs, lifts or work at height

Why it’s worth doing now in Veensgarth

New grout smeared over the old does not bond well. It sits thinly on top and soon flakes away, taking any repair with it. Removing the old grout to an even depth lets the new grout key in properly. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.

Leaving a failed joint normally makes the job bigger, not smaller. If you’re unsure, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

Questions from Veensgarth

Is regrouting in Veensgarth guaranteed?

All our work, in Veensgarth and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We are also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.

Will you come out to Veensgarth?

Yes. Veensgarth is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, including the islands, where work is planned around ferry crossings. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Should corners be grouted or sealed?

Internal corners and edges are sealed with flexible silicone. Grout in a moving joint soon cracks.

Where are you based?

Mr Mastic is based in Crawley. We cover Veensgarth and the rest of the Shetland Islands.

Are you insured?

Yes. We are fully insured for every job we do.

Can you do several jobs on one visit?

Yes. More than one area can go on one quote.

Will you leave a mess?

Not at all. The area is protected while we work and cleaned up afterwards.

Can you change the grout colour?

Yes. It’s the ideal time to change it. Tell us the colour you’d like when you ask for a quote.

Should I try it myself first?

What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions, then guaranteed for a year.

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it does not work out, we can still put it right.

Do you need regrouting in Veensgarth?

Poor ventilation keeps grout damp, and damp grout is where mould grows. When black spots keep returning, the mould has usually got into the grout.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • Grout that stays dark however much it’s cleaned
  • Floor grout that has worn and darkened
  • Grout in a colour the owner wants to change
  • Grout that makes sound tiles look old

Around Veensgarth, as everywhere, regrouting is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Looking after it afterwards

To keep the joints looking good and working properly:

  • Do not ignore a tile that feels loose
  • Rinse the tiles after showering
  • Use gentle cleaners on grout
  • Use a squeegee on the tiles after showering

Give the new grout the time we tell you before using the shower, so it can harden properly. After that, rinse the tiles after showering and let the room air.

Fixing grout early is a small job. Left, the same problem can let water through so it’s worth dealing with as soon as you spot it.

Different surfaces, different methods

Bathroom wall tiles

We can regroute all the walls in a bathroom, depending on the area. You can change the colour at the same time.

Wet rooms

New grout in a wet room keeps the surface sound. It cannot fix waterproofing below the tiles.
