Regrouting for Bridgend homes and businesses

How the job changes by surface

Wet rooms

Regrouting a wet room helps keep water on the surface of the tiles. It does not repair failed tanking underneath.

Corners and edges

Where tiles meet a bath, tray or worktop, the joint is sealed. Grout there would crack.

Regrouting in Bridgend

Before we start, the tiles are checked. Loose or hollow tiles are pointed out first, because regrouting won’t fix what’s behind them. With sound tiles, regrouting is a tidy, lasting improvement. We are often asked to deal with grout that makes sound tiles look old and splashback grout that has darkened, on tiled floors, bathroom wall tiles and wet rooms.

A bathroom in a place like Bridgend gets the same daily wear as one in a city flat. Generally soft Scottish water means less limescale, but steam still lets mould into sealant and grout.

Bridgend questions

What guarantee comes with regrouting in Bridgend?

Every job comes with our one-year guarantee, wherever it is. We are fully insured, and an ARBOMaster approved applicator.

Do you cover Bridgend for regrouting?

Yes, Bridgend is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing, and we will give you a clear price.

Should I try DIY first?

Sometimes. The key is preparation: remove all the old material and work on a clean, dry joint. We can always put it right if it fails.

Do you take out the old sealant first?

Yes, always, and completely. New silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so the joint is cleaned back first.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. We’re fully insured for every job we do.

What sealant do you use?

The product depends on the job: sanitary silicone where it gets wet, and sealants suited to movement or weather elsewhere. Brands we use include Arbo and Everbuild.

How long will you be here?

It depends on the size of the job, but as a guide it takes a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room. We’ll give you a better idea when we quote.

Will there be a smell?

Sometimes, a little. It fades as the sealant cures, and ventilation helps.

Looking after it afterwards

After the cure time, these simple habits help:

  • Look at the sealant in the corners now and then
  • Use a soft brush rather than a wire one
  • Avoid neat bleach and strong acid descalers on grout
  • Do not ignore a tile that feels loose

Before we leave, you’ll know when the shower can be used. Stick to that time, and avoid scrubbing the new grout hard for the first few days.

Stains that will not clean are a sign the grout is breaking down. Regrouting at this stage is straightforward, before the joints open up.

What happens on the day

You do not need to clear the whole room or building, only the area right around the joints. Everything nearby is protected, and the job takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room for a typical job. Outdoor work around Bridgend depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.

  1. We start by checking the tiles for any that are loose or hollow.
  2. Old grout is raked out to a consistent depth without chipping the tiles.
  3. The joints are vacuumed and cleaned.
  4. Fresh grout goes into the joints and the tile faces are wiped clean.
  5. We reseal the internal corners and edges with silicone.

What affects the quote in Bridgend

The price is agreed before any work begins. It takes into account:

  • The type of sealant required
  • How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove
  • Whether the work is at height
  • How many areas need sealing

A few things move the cost up or down: the old material and how easily it comes out, any mould to treat, and whether we need extra access for height. Your quote takes all of that into account.

What to tell us for a quote

A few details help us give you an accurate quote. When you ask for a quote, tell us:

  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • A few pictures by email, if you can
  • Where the property is
  • Whether it’s a home or a business

DIY sealant or a professional job?

Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, such as a straightforward joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it does not work out, we can still put it right.

Bathrooms and kitchens in Bridgend

Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black. In Scotland, private landlords have to meet the Repairing Standard, which covers keeping fixtures and fittings in a reasonable state of repair. Failed sealant around a bath or shower is worth sorting between tenancies.

Around Bridgend, as everywhere, regrouting is only as good as the preparation behind it. For an older house near a landmark such as Kilmichael Glassary Parish Church, bathrooms in older houses have often been refitted more than once, with sealant laid over sealant.

Leave it or put it right?

New grout smeared over the old does not bond well. It sits thinly on top and soon flakes away. Raking out to a consistent depth gives the new grout something to hold. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.
