What we do, step by step

Our applicators work methodically: protect, prepare, seal, tidy. For most jobs that takes a few hours for a handful of gaps, and longer for a whole building. For a place like Bridgend, longer drives are planned in advance. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. We plan the order of work and access, floor by floor or flat by flat.
  2. We take out any damaged or unsuitable sealant.
  3. Dust and loose debris are cleaned from each gap.
  4. We apply and tool the sealant to the product’s tested detail.
  5. We record what was done and flag anything that needs a different system.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints
  • Move anything stored near the joints
  • For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can

Advice

Fire rated sealant in Bridgend, done properly

Deciding which gaps need fire stopping isn’t our role; your assessor, designer or building control sets that out. Our part is applying the specified sealant carefully, to the right depth and with the right backing. We work on door frames, flats & HMOs and pipe & cable gaps, and the jobs we see most are damaged fire sealant left by other trades and gaps filled with a product that isn’t fire-rated.

Commercial work around smaller Scottish places tends to mean hotels, guest houses, schools and halls rather than offices. Each needs sound sealant in its washrooms and kitchens, and fire-rated joints kept in good order.

All our work is covered by a one-year guarantee, wherever you are in Argyll and Bute.

When it is not the sealant

Honest advice matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what sealant can’t fix:

  • Fire risk assessments, which need a qualified assessor
  • A wall that is not a fire-resisting element to begin with
  • Problems with the door itself rather than the gap around the frame

If in doubt, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think before booking.

Surfaces we seal

  • Flats & HMOs
  • Pipe & cable gaps
  • Plasterboard & masonry
  • Linear gaps
  • Service penetrations
  • Door frames

Aftercare tips

Looking after new joints is easy:

  • Photograph sealed gaps before they’re covered up
  • Ask which product was used before you paint
  • Make resealing part of every contractor’s brief
  • Report cracked or damaged seals as soon as you notice them

Let contractors know where fire stopping has been done, and make sure anything they disturb is resealed with a suitable product. Later work is a common cause of damaged fire stopping.

A gap left open in a fire-resisting wall or floor lets smoke spread in ways the building wasn’t designed for. Closing it is normally a straightforward job.

Should I try it myself first?

What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions, then guaranteed for a year.

Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

Leave it or put it right?

Waiting for the next refit can leave a gap open for years. On its own, sealing it now is a small job. In a place like Bridgend, small leaks are easy to put off, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.

We do not show prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a quick quote, please email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Different surfaces, different methods

Linear gaps

Long, narrow gaps appear where walls meet slabs and ceilings. We seal them to the tested detail, with backing where it’s needed.

Plasterboard walls

Holes in plasterboard are often cut roughly for services. Gaps that are too big for sealant alone need a different detail, and we’ll tell you.

Common questions in Bridgend

Do you cover Bridgend for fire rated sealant?

Yes, Bridgend is within the area we cover. We work across all of Scotland. You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing, and we’ll give you a clear quote.

Do you cover smaller places like Bridgend?

Yes. Bridgend is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

I rent my home. Can I book you?

Yes, though it’s best to check with your landlord first. Many landlords are glad to have it sorted.

Is it OK to seal over old sealant?

No, and we never do. It may look fine at first, but the new layer lifts away from the old one. Removing the old sealant completely is the only lasting way.

What do you need from me for a quote?

The location, the problem and the rough size of the job. If you can, email a few photos.

Is standard sealant good enough for a fire gap?

No. A gap that needs fire stopping needs a tested fire-rated product.

Can I add another job to the visit?

Of course. Combining jobs makes good use of the visit.

Are you fully insured?

Yes. We are fully insured.

Common problems we fix in Bridgend

Gaps around door frames are easily missed. The gap between the frame and the wall is hidden behind the architrave, so it can be left open when a door is replaced.

People normally contact us when they notice one of these:

  • Sealant items on a fire risk assessment action list
  • Seals cut through by electricians, plumbers or data installers
  • Linear gaps at the head of walls
  • Holes left by a change of layout

Around Bridgend, as everywhere, fire rated sealant is only as good as the preparation behind it.

What your quote should include

  • What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
  • Whether VAT is included
  • What guarantee comes with the work
  • Which colour the sealant will be
