Regrouting in Backlands, Moray
Regrouting across Backlands and nearby, with every bit of old sealant taken out first.
- Floor grout that will not come clean
- Cracked or crumbling grout lines
- Grout washed out of a shower
Do you need regrouting in Backlands?
Grout is porous, so it soaks up water, soap and dirt. Given time, it discolours and begins to break down and showers that get daily use suffer most.
The most common problems we see are:
- Greasy, stained grout behind the hob
- Grout stained black or orange that will not clean
- A grout colour that no longer suits the room
- Gaps where the shower grout has gone
In and around Backlands, as anywhere, good regrouting starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.
Questions to ask before booking
- Which sealant they’ll use, and why
- When the joint can take water or movement
- Who does the work, and how experienced they are
- Is the old sealant removed completely?
Regrouting in Backlands
A bathroom with good tiles can still look worn if the grout has gone. With regrouting, the tiles stay and only the grout is renewed, so nothing is ripped out. We work on tiled floors, bathroom floors and bathroom wall tiles, and people most often call us about dirty, worn grout on a tiled floor and grout that’s cracking and breaking up.
Across smaller places in Scotland, homes range from stone and harled cottages to newer houses. Where a building moves, cracked grout and split sealant are normally the first signs.
We guarantee the work for a year. If there’s a problem with our work within the year, let us know and we’ll sort it.

Can I do it myself?
If you’re set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.
Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.

Does someone need to be in?

What if some of my tiles are loose?
Tiles that have come away need sorting first. We will show you which ones at the start.
Regrouting in Backlands: local notes
Backlands is close to the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, and sealant and grout that work that hard wear out sooner. Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that doesn’t dry out.
For jobs in and around Backlands, choosing the right material for each joint is as important as a tidy finish.

How the visit works
There’s no need to move everything out before we come, only the area right around the joints. We protect the rest, and the work takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room for a typical job. Somewhere like Backlands may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.
- We agree the area to be regrouted and point out any loose tiles.
- Grout is raked out without chipping the tiles.
- The joints are cleaned out and vacuumed.
- The new grout goes in, then the tile faces are cleaned.
- Internal corners and edges are resealed.
Getting ready for the visit
- For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in
- Mention if the joints have been sealed before
- Let us know about parking restrictions

Why act early in Backlands
New grout smeared over the old doesn’t bond well. A thin skin on top tends to break off. Removing the old grout to an even depth lets the new grout key in properly. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

Aftercare tips
No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. A few tips:
- Clean with a soft brush, not anything metal
- Use a squeegee on the tiles after showering
- Do not use strong acidic cleaners on grout
- Use gentle cleaners on grout
Wipe the tiles down after a shower keeps water off the grout. Ventilate the room well to help it dry out.
Grout that stays dark after cleaning is starting to fail. At this point it’s a simple regrout, before the joints open up.
