Regrouting in Askomill, Argyll and Bute
Tiled areas in Askomill need attention? We remove the old material, prepare the joints and seal them properly.
- Floor grout that will not come clean
- Crumbling grout between the tiles
- Stained grout that cleaning won’t shift
Regrouting in Askomill
Regrouting is usually paired with resealing. Grout is for the joints between tiles, but corners and edges move, so they need flexible silicone instead. Doing both at once leaves the whole area sound. We work on wet rooms, bathroom floors and bathroom wall tiles, and people most often call us about stained grout that cleaning won’t shift and discoloured grout on otherwise sound tiles.
Across smaller places in Scotland, homes range from stone and harled cottages to newer houses. Older buildings can move a little, and that shows first in cracked grout and split sealant.

What happens if it’s left?
With regrouting, your tiles stay where they are. Retiling means stripping the walls, making good and choosing new tiles, and the room is out of use for longer. If the tiles are sound, regrouting is the simpler fix. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.
Leaving a failed joint usually makes the job bigger, not smaller, because water and mould keep working on it. If you’re not sure whether it needs doing, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

Regrouting around Askomill
Askomill is within about 1 mile of the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Private landlords in Scotland must be registered and meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping fixtures and fittings in reasonable repair. Failed sealant around a bath or shower is worth sorting between tenancies.
Whether the job is in Askomill itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish. In and around Askomill, as anywhere, good regrouting starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

How the job changes by surface
Bathroom wall tiles
Walls outside the shower get less water but grout there still discolours. Regrouting brings them back in line.
Shower walls
Shower walls get wet every day, so its grout takes the most punishment. It’s often the first place grout washes out.
Looking after it afterwards
Good habits help new joints last longer. A few tips:
- Run the extractor fan during and after a shower
- Wipe water off the walls when you’re done
- Use a soft brush rather than a wire one
- Do not ignore a tile that feels loose
Wipe the tiles down after a shower stops soap and water sitting on the grout. Run the extractor fan or open a window so the grout dries between uses.
If grout in the shower is washing out, act soon. Each shower drives water into the open joints, and that water can reach the wall or the floor below.

What happens on the day
You do not need to clear the whole room or building, just the space around the work. Everything nearby is protected, and the job takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area in most cases. Outdoor work around Askomill depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Work indoors isn’t affected.

DIY versus a professional finish
If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it does not work out, we can still put it right.
The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.
