Bathroom resealing in WD24: how it works

Kitchens need the same care as bathrooms. The joint between worktop and wall, the edge of the sink and the bottom of the splashback all take splashes every day, and water behind a laminate worktop can make it swell. Kitchen joints get a sealant suited to kitchens, colour-matched where it shows. Typical jobs include a joint torn by a bath that flexes and lumpy, uneven sealant from a DIY attempt, on shower trays & enclosures, basins & vanity units and wet rooms.

Before we leave, we go over the finished joints with you and tell you how long to leave it. The work normally takes a couple of hours for a single bath or shower, depending on how much there is to do.

  1. We protect the area and cut out all of the old sealant.
  2. We clean and degrease the joint and treat any mould.
  3. Once it’s dry, any bath is filled so the bead is laid with it at its heaviest.
  4. We apply anti-fungal sanitary silicone in one even bead and tool it neatly.
  5. Finally we tidy up and explain the cure time before we leave.

Where we work in WD24

From Cassiobury, Woodside and Meriden to its smaller places, homes across WD24 have bathrooms and kitchens of every age. Sealant and grout wear out in all of them, whether it’s a family bathroom, a rented flat or a hotel en suite.

London and the South East have homes from every era, from period terraces to post-war new towns and new estates. Each needs the right sealant for its age and materials.

North Watford: Rented homes near Watford North station change hands often, and a reseal between tenants is a quick way to make the bathroom and kitchen look cared for. In the older streets around St Peter's Church, walls and floors in older homes can move, and sealant and grout show it first.

Different surfaces, different methods

Shower trays & enclosures

If a tray moves underfoot, new silicone won’t last. Movement is checked before anything is resealed, and tell you if it needs re-bedding first.

Sinks & splashbacks

Next to the sink, the sealant has to cope with constant water, including a food-safe sealant where that’s needed. The bead is finished smooth so it wipes clean.

Signs you need bathroom resealing

Silicone needs a clean, dry surface without any grease to stick to. Traces of soap, bath oil and old sealant stop it gripping, so a rushed job can start to lift early.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • Water getting behind the bath panel
  • A joint torn by a bath that flexes
  • Cracked, shrunken or lifting silicone
  • Gaps between the worktop and the wall

Should I try it myself first?

What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions, and the work is guaranteed for a year.

If you’ve already had a go yourself, that is fine. We remove it and do the joint properly, so just mention it when you contact us.

Aftercare tips

Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Squeegee the walls and tray after use
  • Let new sealant cure fully before it gets wet
  • Keep bottles off the sealant line
  • Clean with a mild bathroom cleaner and a soft cloth

Keep bottles and razors off the sealant line, because they trap water against the silicone. A quick squeegee after showering keeps water from sitting on the joint.

Small signs come before a leak: a corner lifting, a gap behind the bead, a dark line under the silicone or a damp patch on the ceiling below. If you spot one, it’s time to reseal.

Why deal with it now?

Mould removers can fade the surface of a stained bead, but mould that has grown into the sealant tends to return. The lasting answer is to remove the bead and start again.

Questions from WD24

What do you put in the joint?

The product depends on the job: sanitary silicone where it gets wet, and sealants suited to movement or weather elsewhere. We use products from Arbo and Everbuild.

How long does it take to reseal a bath or shower?

One bath or shower is around two hours’ work, including cutting out the old sealant. A whole bathroom plus the kitchen may take most of the day.

Will there be a smell?

It depends on the product. Some smell for a while, some hardly at all, and any smell fades as they cure.

Can I choose the colour of the sealant?

White, clear and a range of colours are available. On a worktop we colour-match where the joint shows.

Do I have to be there?

It depends on the job. Inside work needs someone to give us access, while outside work can sometimes be arranged differently.

Do you come to WD24?

We do. Our applicators work in WD24.

What should I tell you?
