Woll External Mastic
We cover Woll for sealing brickwork movement joints, render, cladding and façade joints. Old material cut out, joints cleaned and sealed neatly.
- Sealant pulling away from one side of the joint
- Brick movement joints where the sealant has split
- Hard, crazed mastic that has stopped moving
Why deal with it now?
Running new sealant over the old bead rarely lasts. New sealant doesn’t bond well to old, weathered sealant, so the old joint is cut out fully first. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.
We do not show prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a quick quote and we’ll talk you through it.

External mastic in Woll
We’re ARBOMaster approved applicators, and each external joint gets a sealant suited to it. Porous or awkward surfaces are primed where the sealant needs it. If you’re dealing with joints where the bead has come unstuck and failed seals between different materials, we can put it right, whatever the surface.
Outside joints can only be sealed when they’re dry, so work in Woll depends on the weather. Let us know about access to every wall and roofline.
All our work is covered by a one-year guarantee, wherever you are in the Scottish Borders.

When to call us in Woll
Buildings move more than people expect. Clay bricks expand slightly over their life, concrete and block shrink, and everything moves with temperature and wet. The sealant in the movement joints takes that strain.
Look out for these signs:
- Failed seals between different materials
- Sealant pulling away from one side of the joint
- Water getting into walls through failed joints
- Weathered mastic that no longer stretches
For an older house near a landmark such as Ashkirk Parish Church, an extension built onto an older house moves differently, and the joint between them takes the strain.

Honest limits
To be straight with you, some problems need a different trade:
- Movement that is more than a sealant joint can take
- Rising or penetrating damp from elsewhere in the wall
- Loose or hollow render, which needs re-rendering
Not sure which it is? You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

What else we do in Woll
What the job involves on each surface
Cladding and façade panels
Panel systems often rely on sealant between and around the panels. Each joint gets a sealant that suits the panel and its movement.
Render joints
Rendered walls have joints at beads, openings and changes of material. They’re resealed in a sealant that suits the render.
Common questions in Woll
Do you cover smaller places like Woll?
Yes, we do. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Do you cover Woll for external mastic?
Yes, Woll is within the area we cover. We work across all of Scotland. Just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job.
Is it OK to seal over old sealant?
No. The old sealant always comes out first.
Can you do several jobs on one visit?
Yes. Just list everything you need.
Do you do commercial work?
Yes, regularly. We can plan bigger jobs in stages.
What’s an expansion joint in brickwork?
A vertical gap in a long brick wall is usually a movement joint. It lets the bricks expand without cracking, and it should be sealed with a flexible sealant.
Do you work at height?
It depends on the height and the site. Low-level joints are straightforward; for higher work, tell us about the building and we’ll confirm what’s needed.
Can tenants book the work?
We can work for tenants, landlords or agents. Get your landlord’s agreement first.
The process
Most of a good job is in the preparation, so that’s where we spend the time. Joints are cleaned back and dried before anything new goes in. All told, the work takes anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building. Outside jobs in Woll need a dry day, because sealant will not bond to a wet joint, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.
- We look at every joint and agree a colour to suit the wall.
- Failed sealant is removed back to clean, sound faces.
- Closed-cell backing rod is pushed in so the sealant bonds to two sides only.
- Primer is applied wherever the sealant needs it.
- A low-modulus exterior sealant is gunned in and tooled to a neat finish.
Before we arrive

- Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints
- Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children

Advice
What external mastic looks like in Woll
Plenty of Scottish homes have harled walls, and where harling meets frames, pipes and other materials, the joint needs a flexible sealant that grips a rough surface. Private landlords in Scotland must meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping a home wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that.
Around Woll, as everywhere, external mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Aftercare tips
How long the joints last depends on use and care. We suggest:
- Make sure movement joints aren’t pointed over
- Wash walls gently around the sealant
- Leave the joints unpainted unless we’ve said otherwise
- Show decorators and builders where the movement joints are
Have a quick look at the joints each spring. Splits, gaps at the edges or plants in the joint are early warning signs.
Leaks behind façade panels and render often go unseen. When it finally shows inside, the joint may have been open for years, so it’s worth resealing at the first signs.
