Need external mastic in Hunters Quay?

When it isn’t the sealant

To be straight with you, some problems need a different trade:

  • Render that is blown, hollow or coming away
  • Cracks in the bricks or render themselves, away from the joints
  • Movement that is more than a sealant joint can take

If in doubt, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll say what we think before booking.

How we handle external mastic in Hunters Quay

On houses, flats and commercial buildings across Hunters Quay, we reseal joints in brickwork, render, cladding and façade panels. The preparation is the same whatever the wall: clean joint faces and the right depth. We work on façade panels, concrete & block and render & cladding joints, and the jobs we see most are rigid filler in a joint that should flex and weathered mastic that no longer stretches.

Stone walls need a stone-friendly sealant, as acetoxy products can attack some stone. On newer homes, the movement joints and roofline trims are what need watching.

You get a 12-month guarantee, the same in Hunters Quay as everywhere else we work.

The process

The work is kept neat and contained to the area we’re working on, so you can carry on as normal. The job usually takes a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access, and we tell you how long to leave it before we go. For a place like Hunters Quay, longer drives are planned in advance. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. First we look over the joints with you, agree which to renew and talk through access.
  2. We cut out the failed sealant and rake out any dirt or growth.
  3. We clean both faces of the joint and prime them where the product calls for it.
  4. Backing rod goes in next, setting the depth and keeping the sealant off the back of the joint.
  5. A flexible exterior sealant is applied and tooled in a colour to suit the wall.

Advice

How the job changes by surface

Copings and trims

Coping joints that leak let water straight down into the wall. Sealing them early saves the wall below.

Cladding and façade panels

Cladding and façade panels are generally separated by sealed joints. We reseal them with a sealant suited to the panel material.

What external mastic looks like in Hunters Quay

Hunters Quay is close to the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That is hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, especially on the side facing the sea. Plenty of Scottish homes have harled walls, and joints where harling meets other materials need a sealant that can grip and flex.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Kirn Primary School, larger buildings have long runs of movement joint that eventually need resealing. For an older house near a landmark such as Kirn Church, old and new materials meet at the roofline and walls, which is where sealant earns its keep.

Do you need external mastic in Hunters Quay?

Weeds, moss and debris in a joint are a sign the sealant has gone. Roots and dirt hold water against the wall.

Common reasons people contact us are:

  • Movement joints with cracked, split or missing sealant
  • Weathered mastic that no longer stretches
  • Plants rooting in failed movement joints
  • Leaking joints around cladding and façade panels

If you let a flat or house near Gourock station, failed wall and movement joints let damp in, so they’re worth checking between tenancies.

Quotes for external mastic in Hunters Quay

You’ll get a clear quote before we start. It takes into account:

  • When we can work, for business premises
  • The size of the job
  • How many areas need sealing
  • How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove

A few things move the cost up or down: the old material and how easily it comes out, whether mould needs treating, and whether we need extra access for height. We take all of that into account in your quote.

Asking for a quote

What to tell us when you ask for a quote:

  • Whether it’s a home or a business
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • How we’d reach the joints
  • Roughly how big the job is

DIY sealant or a professional job?

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, such as a straightforward joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.

A DIY attempt does not rule out a professional job. We cut it out and start again, so tell us about it when you ask for a quote.

Hunters Quay: your questions answered

I let a flat near Gourock station. Can you help?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for, and several properties can go on one quote. You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the details for a clear quote.

Will you come out to Hunters Quay?

Yes. Hunters Quay is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

What’s an expansion joint in brickwork?

A vertical gap in a long brick wall is usually a movement joint. It gives the wall room to move.

Where is Mr Mastic based?

Our base is in Crawley, and we work across South East England, London and Scotland.

How long will you be here?

Most jobs take a few hours for a handful of joints, longer for a whole elevation. We’ll confirm how long when we quote.

How long should I leave it?

That depends on the sealant used, so follow the cure time we give you.

Is it OK to fill a movement joint with cement?

No, not if it’s a movement joint. Filling it with mortar defeats its purpose, and the wall may crack nearby. We will reseal it with a flexible sealant.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes, for a year. If there’s a problem with our work in that time, tell us and we will put it right.

Aftercare tips

So the new joints stay in good condition:

  • Look over the joints every year, ideally after winter
  • Keep water from gutters off the wall
  • Have failed joints looked at early
  • Make sure movement joints are not pointed over

Follow the cure time we give you before the joint is knocked or disturbed. The surface skins over quickly, but full cure takes longer.

Water getting behind cladding or render can go unnoticed for a long time. By the time there’s a damp patch, the damage can be well established so early resealing is worth it.
