Window mastic for Toogs homes and businesses

What we do, step by step

There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Point us to the joints and we will get on with it. The work itself takes a morning for a couple of windows and a door. Outdoor work around Toogs depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.

  1. First we look at every frame and agree the list.
  2. We remove the old mastic and clean the frame and the wall.
  3. Deep gaps are filled with backing rod to set the depth.
  4. We apply a weatherproof sealant to match the frame and tool it neatly.
  5. Every joint is checked before we leave.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention any leaks or damp you’ve noticed

How we handle window mastic in Toogs

Every window and door frame has a gap around it, and mastic is what closes it. Once that seal fails, wind and rain find the gap. Our applicators cut it out and replace it with a flexible, weatherproof sealant. We’re often asked to deal with gaps where the sill meets the wall and gaps left after new windows were fitted, on aluminium frames, window sills and timber windows & doors.

In and around a place like Toogs, homes range from older stone-built cottages to newer houses. Wind-driven rain finds any gap around a frame or sill, so the mastic there works hard.

The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If something is not right with it in that time, tell us and we will put it right.

How we quote for window mastic

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:

  • The type of sealant required
  • Whether the work is at height
  • How many areas need sealing
  • Mould in or behind the old joints

Every job is a little different, so we quote each one individually. Size, access and the product the joint needs all make a difference, and we’ll explain the quote if you ask.

Helping us quote

To make quoting easier, let us know:

  • Whether it’s a home or a business
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • Roughly how big the job is
  • Where the job is, and your postcode

There’s no standard price list. Instead, your job gets its own clear quote. To get started, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Window mastic in Toogs: local notes

Toogs is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on the mastic around window and door frames, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Work on the islands has to be planned around ferry crossings and the weather, so the more notice, the better.

In and around Toogs, as anywhere, good window mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint. For an older house near a landmark such as Burra Parish Church, frames set in older brick or stone need a sealant that suits the wall as well as the frame.

Toogs is in the Shetland Islands. Wherever you are in the ZE2 postcode area, our applicators can take on window mastic. Our area takes in 63 places across the Shetland Islands.

Here we cover the ZE2 postcode area for window mastic. Other places close to Toogs include Hamnavoe (1 mile north), Scalloway (4 miles north-east), Cunningsburgh (4 miles south-east), Bremirehoull (4 miles south-east) and Aithsetter (5 miles south-east). Your questions about window mastic in Toogs

Does living near the coast affect window mastic in Toogs?

Coastal homes put outside sealant through more weather than inland ones, so preparation and the right sealant matter all the more. Walls facing the sea are usually the first to need attention.

Do you cover Toogs for window mastic?

Yes, Toogs is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing, and we’ll give you a clear price.

Can I add another job to the visit?

Of course. Doing several areas at once is generally more efficient, so mention them when you ask for a quote.

Is the new sealant paintable?

That depends on the product. Silicone is not paintable, but some hybrid sealants are. Mention any painting plans before any work starts.

Is it messy?

No. The area is protected while we work and cleaned up afterwards.

How do I get a quote for window mastic in Toogs?

There’s no set price, as it depends on the job: how much there is, what’s there now, how we reach it and what it needs. We agree the price before any work begins.

Do you seal inside as well as outside?

Yes, we do both. Indoors, we seal between the frame and the plaster or reveal, using a paintable sealant if you want to decorate.

How long will my window job take?

A few frames take a few hours, while a whole house takes longer. We confirm the timing with your quote.

Should I try it myself first?

Some jobs are best left to a professional: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs need the right product, the right access and the right method.

Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, such as a straightforward joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.

Looking after it afterwards

Simple care keeps the joints in good condition. Our advice:

  • Paint up to the joint, not over it
  • Keep drainage slots and sill grooves clear
  • Repaint timber before it’s bare
  • Don’t use solvent cleaners on the joint

Keep the new mastic undisturbed while it cures, following the cure time we give you. Do not point a pressure washer at the joints.

Water gets in quietly when mastic fails. Often the first sign is a damp patch inside or flaking paint on the reveal. Early resealing stops it reaching that point.

Why deal with it now?

A cracked joint around a frame lets rain into the wall. Over time that can mean damp patches, damaged plaster and rotting timber. Resealing now is a small job by comparison. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

Doing several joints on one visit is generally more efficient than separate visits, so it’s worth mentioning everything you’d like done. We will give you a clear price for the lot.

Why us?

  • A choice of colours where the product allows
  • Trusted Arbo and Everbuild sealants
  • Anti-fungal silicone where joints get wet
  • We never seal over old sealant
