Sand mastic in Farr

Sand mastic skins over fairly quickly but full hardening takes longer. Traditional guidance is not to paint over it and we’ll advise if you are redecorating. We work on period & listed homes, stone surrounds and sash and case windows, and common reasons people get in touch are weathered mastic on the most exposed windows and silicone on a period window that looks wrong.

Mastic can only go onto a dry joint, so outside work in Farr depends on the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Tell us about access to all the windows and doors, upstairs included.

Big or small, it’s backed by our 12-month guarantee.

Keeping the joints in good condition

So the new joints stay in good condition:

  • Find out about consent before window work on a listed home
  • Look over the window mastic once a year
  • Plan mastic work ahead of painting
  • Ask us before painting near the mastic

Leave the new mastic alone while it firms up. It forms a skin fairly soon, but takes longer to harden fully.

Renewing mastic before redecorating saves doing it twice. Paint over cracked mastic only covers it up.

When it is not the sealant

We will always be straight with you, so here’s what new sealant won’t do:

  • Sashes that need overhauling
  • Damaged stone surrounds
  • Cracked or broken glass

If you’re not sure, just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you a straight answer.

FAQs for Farr

Do you cover Farr for sand mastic?

Yes. We work across all of Scotland, and Farr is part of that. You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing, and we’ll give you a clear quote.

Is Farr within the area you cover?

Yes. Farr is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across all of Scotland. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Will it make a mess?

No. We protect the surfaces around the joints, and we clear up the old sealant and our materials before we leave.

Do you remove the old sealant?

Yes, every time. New silicone does not stick to old silicone, so the joint is cleaned back first.

Can you work on commercial sites?

Yes. Commercial and hotel work is a large part of what we do, as well as homes. Working times can be discussed when we quote.

What guarantee comes with the work?

Our 12-month guarantee covers every job, sand mastic included.

Do I need to be at home?

If the work is inside, we need someone to let us in. Once we’ve agreed the job, you don’t need to watch us work.

Is there any odour?

Sometimes, a little. Any smell clears as the sealant cures, and ventilation helps.

Many older homes in Scotland have sash and case windows, often pointed into the wall with traditional sand mastic. Farr is in the west of Scotland, which is wetter than the east, which means the mastic around older windows and doors has to cope with a lot of rain.

What affects the cost of sand mastic

The price is agreed before any work begins. It takes into account:

  • Working hours on commercial sites
  • The old material and how stubborn it is
  • The size of the job
  • The product the joint needs

A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting. If you are not sure whether it needs doing, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

What to tell us for a quote

Photos by email are helpful but not essential. Try to tell us:

  • Whether it has been sealed before
  • How we’d reach the joints
  • Whether it’s a home or a business
  • A few photos by email, if you can

A good description makes for an accurate quote. Tell us where the job is, what’s wrong and how much there is.

When to call us in Farr

Scraping and sanding before painting can loosen old mastic. It’s often found when windows are being prepared for paint.

If you can see any of these, it’s time to have the joints looked at:

  • Mastic worn away on windows facing the weather
  • Cracked mastic round a front door frame
  • Crumbling sand mastic round a window
  • Draughty sash windows at the surround

In and around Farr, as anywhere, good sand mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

What to look for in a quote

  • Is the old sealant removed completely?
  • Whether the sealant suits the joint
  • What the cure time is
  • Are they insured?

How to choose a mastic man

The process

Once we’re on site, we compare the joints with what we discussed. If anything is different, we explain it before carrying on. Most jobs then take a few hours for a single window, longer for several. Somewhere like Farr may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. First we agree which joints need doing.
  2. We remove the old, loose mastic.
  3. We pack any deep voids first.
  4. We apply the mastic by hand and shape it.
  5. The surface is finished to suit the stone or brick.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises
  • Clear the area around the work
  • Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive

How to get a quote

For a quick quote, get us on the phone, or email us if that’s easier. Tell us about the joints that need doing and we will explain what’s involved before giving you a price.
