How the visit works

There is not much for you to do on the day. Point us to the joints and we’ll get on with it. The job generally takes a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room, including the tidy-up. Around Piperdam, distance and access matter more than parking. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. We check the tiles are sound and flag any that are loose or hollow.
  2. We rake out the old grout to an even depth, taking care of the tile edges.
  3. We vacuum the joints and clean out the dust.
  4. New grout is worked into the joints and cleaned off the tile faces.
  5. We reseal the internal corners and edges with silicone.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises
  • Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts
  • Clear items away from the joints we are working on

How we handle regrouting in Piperdam

Before we start, the tiles are checked. Loose or hollow tiles are pointed out first, since new grout can’t fix a problem underneath. With sound tiles, regrouting is a tidy, lasting improvement. If you have crumbling grout between the tiles and greasy, stained grout behind the hob, we can put it right.

A bathroom in a place like Piperdam gets the same daily wear as one in a city flat. Limescale is less of a problem with Scotland’s generally soft water, but mould still takes hold in damp sealant and grout.

We stand behind the work with a 12-month guarantee, so you’re not left on your own once the job is done.

FAQs for Piperdam

Is Piperdam within the area you cover?

Yes, Piperdam is covered. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Do you work for landlords with property near Invergowrie station?

Yes, rental work is part of what we do. Just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us about the property, and we’ll give you a clear quote.

Can you regrout just the shower?

We can. We’ll check the other tiled areas as well and let you know if more needs doing.

Do I need to be at home?

For indoor joints, yes, someone needs to let us in. Once we’ve agreed the job, you don’t need to watch us work.

Do you guarantee regrouting?

Every job comes with our one-year guarantee.

Can you change the grout colour?

Yes, regrouting is the time to do it. Tell us the colour you’d like when you ask for a quote.

Are you insured?

Yes, we are fully insured for domestic and commercial work.

Can I do it myself?

You can, for simple jobs. Preparation is everything: all the old sealant out, and a clean, dry joint. If it does not work out, we can redo it.

Common problems we fix in Piperdam

Soap scum and limescale build up on grout and stick to it. The grout beneath can stain and weaken, and at that point, new grout is the better answer.

If you can see any of these, it’s time to have the joints looked at:

  • Crumbling grout between the tiles
  • Floor grout that won’t come clean
  • Good tiles let down by tired grout
  • Grout in corners that has cracked

Rented homes near Invergowrie station change hands often, and a regrout while the flat is empty is quicker than working around a tenant.

Questions to ask before booking

  • What guarantee comes with the work
  • Whether VAT is included
  • How the joint is cleaned and prepared
  • Is the old sealant removed completely?

How the job changes by surface

Wet rooms

Wet room grout and sealant need to be in good order. We renew both.

Kitchen splashbacks

Splashback grout picks up grease and cooking stains. Stained grout is best replaced.

How to look after the new joints

After the cure time, these simple habits help:

  • Keep the fan on after showering
  • Use a squeegee on the tiles after showering
  • Stick to mild products for cleaning grout
  • Use a soft brush rather than a wire one

Give the new grout the time we tell you before using the shower, so it cures fully. From then on, a quick rinse after showering helps and let the room air.

Grout that stays dark after cleaning is starting to fail. At this point it’s a simple regrout, before the joints open up.

When it is not the sealant

To be straight with you, there are a few things sealant will not fix:

  • Failed tanking or waterproofing under the tiles
  • Cracked or broken tiles
  • Tiles that have come away from the wall

If in doubt, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll say what we think.

Can I do it myself?

A DIY attempt does not rule out a professional job. We cut it out and start again, so just mention it when you contact us.

Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

Piperdam homes and their sealant

Dundee has plenty of sandstone tenements, where a failed bath or shower seal can reach the flat below. Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that does not dry out.

In the older streets around Lundie Parish Church, older homes can move a little, which is hard on rigid grout and tired sealant.

Why act early in Piperdam

If tiles are loose, regrouting alone isn’t the answer. We point that out first, so you can decide what to do. On sound tiles, regrouting avoids the upheaval of a retile. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.

Commercial jobs are quoted on the same basis as homes: the amount of work, how we reach it and what it needs. Call for a quick quote and we’ll explain what it covers.
