How we handle gutter sealing in Wilton

Water dripping from a gutter joint can stain walls and soak the ground below. Often a reseal is enough if the gutter is not damaged. Common call-outs are for water dripping where gutter sections meet and earlier gutter repairs that have peeled off, on uPVC fascias, roofline trims and soffit joints.

Older stone buildings need a sealant that suits the stone, not an acetoxy product that can mark or attack it. On newer homes, the movement joints and roofline trims are what need watching.

A one-year guarantee comes as standard, so you are covered after we’ve gone.

Signs you need gutter sealing in Wilton

A sealant applied to a damp or dirty joint won’t bond. Some quick repairs peel off within a season or two for this reason.

The most common problems we see are:

  • Garage door frames letting rain in
  • Quick sealant fixes on gutters that didn’t last
  • Wet patches on the wall under a gutter joint
  • Stop ends leaking at the end of a run

If you look after a building such as Hawick High School, movement joints, cladding joints and gutters on larger buildings need the same care as a house’s.

Questions to ask before you book

  • The length of the guarantee
  • Who does the work, and how experienced they are
  • When the joint can take water or movement
  • Are they insured?

Choosing a sealant specialist

Different surfaces, different methods

Garage door frames

The joint between frame and brickwork moves and weathers. An exterior sealant suits them.

Soffit joints

Soffit joints are sealed in a colour to suit, where one is available.

What we do, step by step

When we arrive, we look over the joints with you first, so you know exactly what we’re doing. We protect the surfaces around the joints before we start. The work generally takes an hour or two for a few joints, longer for a full run. In smaller Scottish places, parking is generally less of an issue than access and distance. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints.

  1. We look at the gutters, fascias and trims and agree the joints to seal.
  2. We clean out each joint.
  3. We make sure everything is dry.
  4. We apply exterior or gutter sealant and finish it neatly.
  5. We check our work before we leave.

Before we arrive

  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
  • Keep pets and children clear of the area while we work
  • Clear the area around the work

Gutter sealing in Wilton: local notes

With historic houses such as Harden (about 3.1 miles west) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Wilton as well as newer homes. In older buildings, older brick and stone need a sealant that suits them, at the right joint depth. Private landlords in Scotland must meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping a home wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that.

Homes close to Wilton Parish Church include some older properties, and old and new materials meet at the roofline and walls, which is where sealant earns its keep.

Can I do it myself?

Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, such as a straightforward joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.

Not every job suits DIY: work at height, external movement joints, fire-rated sealant and large areas need the right product, the right access and the right method.

Honest limits

We won’t take on work that won’t last, so here’s what sealant cannot put right:

  • Downpipes that are blocked or broken
  • Fascias that need replacing
  • Roof leaks, slipped tiles or failed flashing (a roofer’s job)

If in doubt, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • uPVC fascias
  • Roofline trims
  • Gutter end caps
  • Soffit joints
  • Gutter joints
  • Garage door frames

Looking after it afterwards

How long the joints last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Do not lean ladders against the gutter itself
  • Don’t leave a sagging gutter
  • Look along the fascias for open joints
  • Deal with a drip before winter

If a gutter starts to sag, get the brackets looked at. Movement will pull the joints open again.

Rain getting in round a garage door frame can damage what’s stored inside. A reseal sorts it.

Wilton: your questions answered

Will you come out to Wilton?

Yes, we do. We work across all of Scotland, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Is Wilton in your area for gutter sealing?

Yes, Wilton is within the area we cover. We work across all of Scotland. Just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job.

Can tenants book the work?

Of course. Ask your landlord first, and we can send them the quote if that helps.

Where is Mr Mastic based?

We’re a Crawley-based firm. We work across South East England, London and Scotland.

Do you take out the old sealant first?

Always. Sealing over old sealant is the main reason resealing fails early, and it’s something we never do.

Do you work for hotels and businesses?

Yes. Larger jobs can be planned room by room or area by area to suit the site.

Does someone need to be in?

If the work is inside, we need someone to let us in. Once we’ve agreed the job, you don’t need to watch us work.

Do you replace gutters or fascias?

We don’t replace gutters or fascias. We’ll tell you if the gutter needs replacing so you can call the right trade.

What affects the cost of gutter sealing

Every job gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • Any mould that needs treating
  • The type of sealant required
  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
  • The number and length of the joints

No two jobs are quite the same, so each one gets its own quote. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all make a difference.

What to tell us for a quote

Photos by email are helpful but not essential. Please mention:

  • What’s wrong with the joints now
  • Where the job is, and your postcode
  • The type of property
  • A few photos by email, if you can

We don’t publish a price list. Instead, we send you a clear quote for your job. To get started, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.
