Gutter sealing in Stirches

Gutter sealing for homes and businesses in Stirches

A leaking gutter joint marks the wall and wets the ground underneath. Often a reseal is enough if the gutter is not damaged. If you’re dealing with trim joints where the sealant has failed and rain getting in around a garage door, we can help.

Outside joints can only be sealed when they’re dry, so work in Stirches depends on the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Tell us how to reach each wall, gutter and roofline.

Every job is covered by a 12-month guarantee, wherever you are in the Scottish Borders.

How the visit works

Most of a good job is in the preparation, so that’s where we spend the time. Joints are cleaned back and dried before anything new goes in. In total, it normally takes a few hours, depending on the number of joints and the access. Outdoor work around Stirches depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Work indoors isn’t affected.

  1. We look at where the water is coming from and check the gutter is not broken or sagging.
  2. The joint or trim is cleaned out and old sealant removed.
  3. We make sure the joint is dry before sealing.
  4. An exterior or gutter sealant is applied to the joint.
  5. The run is checked and any debris near the joints is cleared.

DIY versus a professional finish

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.

A DIY attempt doesn’t rule out a professional job. We remove it and do the joint properly.

Stirches: your questions answered

Will you come out to Stirches?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

What guarantee comes with gutter sealing in Stirches?

All our work, in Stirches and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We’re fully insured, and an ARBOMaster approved applicator.

Do I need to be at home?

That depends on where the joints are. Inside work needs someone to give us access, while outside work can sometimes be arranged differently.

Will the old sealant be removed?

Yes, always, and completely. New silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so the joint is cleaned back first.

Is it messy?

Not at all. We work neatly, protect the area around the joints and tidy up afterwards.

Are you ARBOMaster approved?

Yes. ARBOMaster is the approved applicator scheme for Arbo sealants, and we’re part of it.

Can sealant stop a sagging gutter leaking?

Not on its own. A sagging gutter pulls its joints apart, so the brackets need fixing first.

Do the sealants smell?

Some sealants have a smell while they cure. Opening a window helps.

Gutter sealing in Stirches: local notes

Harled (roughcast) walls are common in Scotland, and joints where harling meets other materials need a sealant that can grip and flex. With historic houses such as Harden (about 3.1 miles west) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Stirches as well as newer homes. Where a home is older, older brick and stone need a sealant that suits them, at the right joint depth.

Homes close to Wilton Parish Church include some older properties, and the joints between older walls, newer extensions and the roofline need a sealant that can move.

Common problems we fix in Stirches

Sealant on fascias and trims weathers like any outdoor joint. It hardens, shrinks and splits over time.

Any of these means the joints need attention:

  • Stop ends leaking at the end of a run
  • Wet patches on the wall under a gutter joint
  • Damp patches inside below a leaking gutter
  • Water dripping where gutter sections meet

Managing a site like Hawick High School? Then larger buildings have long runs of movement joint that eventually need resealing.

What your quote should include

  • Is VAT in the price?
  • Is the old sealant removed completely?
  • The length of the guarantee
  • Are they insured?

How we quote for gutter sealing

You’ll get a clear quote before work begins. It takes into account:

  • Which sealant suits the joint
  • Mould in or behind the old joints
  • Access and height
  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved

Rather than a set price list, we look at what your job involves: the amount of work, the old material and the access. The price is agreed before we begin.

Helping us quote

You do not need to know the technical terms. It helps if you can tell us:

  • Access, such as stairs, a lift or height
  • Roughly how big the job is
  • Photos by email, if that is easy
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work

Quotes start with a quick conversation. Describe the problem, the location and the size of the job. Whenever you’re ready, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Looking after it afterwards

So the new joints stay in good condition:

  • Get leaks sealed before the wet months
  • Get a dropping gutter looked at quickly
  • Look for streaks or damp on the wall below gutters
  • Don’t lean ladders against the gutter itself

Leave the new sealant to cure as we advise and avoid disturbing it.

Split sealant on fascias and trims lets water in behind. Resealing early protects the boards and the wall below.

Honest limits

We’d rather tell you now than do work that won’t last, so these are the limits:

  • Blocked downpipes
  • Guttering that needs replacing
  • Problems with the roof covering

If in doubt, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll say what we think before you book.
