Why it’s worth doing now in The Rigg
Fixing a leaking screen early protects what’s underneath. A small leak can reach the floor below before it shows. Around The Rigg, water from a failed joint in an older stone home can soak into timber and plaster.
Doing several joints on one visit is generally more efficient than separate visits, so it’s worth mentioning everything you’d like done. You will get one clear quote for the whole job.

About our glazing silicone in The Rigg
Sealant on glazing does not last for ever. Weather and movement take their toll, and once it cracks, water follows. Renewing it keeps glazing joints doing their job. Common call-outs are for rooflight joints letting water in and drips on the inside of a conservatory window, across glass balustrade bases, shower screens and conservatory frames.
Mastic can only go onto a dry joint, so outside work in The Rigg depends on the weather. Tell us about access to all the windows and doors, upstairs included.
You are covered for a year from the day we finish. If anything isn’t right with it, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

The Rigg: your questions answered
Can you do glazing silicone in The Rigg?
Yes. We work across all of Scotland, and The Rigg is part of that. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job.
Is The Rigg within the area you cover?
Yes, we do. We work across all of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
Is it possible to redo the silicone on a shower screen?
Yes. We cut out the old silicone and reseal the glass-to-wall and glass-to-tray joints.
How do I get a quote for glazing silicone in The Rigg?
We do not publish prices, because the cost depends on the job: how much there is, what’s there now, how we reach it and what it needs. You will get a clear quote before any work starts.
Do you take out the old sealant first?
Yes, every time. New silicone does not stick to old silicone, so any old material comes out before anything new goes in.
Should I try DIY first?
You can, for simple jobs. The key is preparation: remove all the old material and work on a clean, dry joint. We can always put it right if it fails.
Do you offer different sealant colours?
We help you choose a colour that suits. The choice depends on the product the joint needs.
What do you need from me for a quote?
Only a few details: the address or postcode, what’s wrong and any access issues. After that, simply drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.
For landlords and businesses
Hotels need rooms back in use, so we plan the work room by room around your bookings where we can. Hotel work is part of what we do, alongside homes and businesses.
Mouldy or split sealant often shows up at the end of a tenancy. We can quote for more than one property at once.

What else we do in The Rigg
The Rigg homes and the weather
Sash and case windows are common in older Scottish homes, often pointed into the wall with traditional sand mastic. The west of Scotland is wetter than the east, which means glazing joints and frame seals has to cope with a lot of rain.
If you live in an older home near Barony Church, the joint between an old wall and a newer frame is usually the first place rain gets in. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Robert Burns Academy, the mastic around its windows and doors needs looking after like any other building’s. Letting a property close to Auchinleck station? Then glazing joints are worth checking at the end of a tenancy, before a small leak grows.

Honest limits
Honest advice matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what sealant can’t fix:
- Frames that have decayed or split
- Water coming through the roof rather than a sealant joint
- Condensation trapped between two panes
If in doubt, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think.
What we seal
- Glass-to-glass joints
- Rooflights
- Glass balustrade bases
- Shower screens
- Conservatory frames
- Glass-to-frame joints
What we do, step by step
Once we’re on site, we compare the joints with what we discussed. If we find something unexpected, we talk it through with you first. After that, the work takes a few hours, depending on how many joints need doing. Around The Rigg, distance and access matter more than parking. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints, and the visit is planned around that.
- We start by finding the leak and making sure sealant is the cause.
- Old silicone is cut away from the glass and frame without scratching either.
- Surfaces are cleaned with a solvent suited to glass and the frame.
- Glazing silicone suited to the joint is applied and tooled.
- The finished joints are checked and, where it’s safe, tested with water.
Before we arrive
- Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
- On commercial sites, let us know about site rules
- Clear the area around the work

DIY sealant or a professional job?
Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.
If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it does not work out, we can still put it right.
Surface by surface
Rooflights
A rooflight faces rain and sun from above. Its sealant ages faster than vertical joints.
Conservatory frames
Conservatory frame joints are a common source of leaks. We cut out the old sealant and reseal.
Looking after it afterwards
To keep the joints looking good and working properly:
- Do not leave a drip for the next storm
- Use a gentle glass cleaner and a soft cloth
- Use gentle products around the joints
- Keep air moving in the conservatory
Don’t use blades or scrapers near the bead when you clean. Stick to a soft cloth.
Shower screen leaks can go unnoticed. It can damage the floor or the ceiling below before you spot it.
