External & façade joints in Sound, Shetland Islands
Movement joints in Sound need attention? We cut out the old, prepare the joints and apply the right sealant.
- Hard, crazed mastic that has stopped moving
- Leaking joints around cladding and façade panels
- Joints with sealant missing in places
How we handle external mastic in Sound
Movement joints let brickwork, render and cladding expand and shrink without cracking. Its sealant has to flex with the building, season after season, so once it splits or hardens, the joint stops working and water gets in. We work on joints between brick and frames, concrete & block and façade panels, and common reasons people get in touch are cracked joints where brick meets render or frames and old sealant gone brittle and cracked.
Stone walls need a stone-friendly sealant, as acetoxy products can attack some stone. Newer houses need their movement joints and roofline trims kept sound.

What external mastic looks like in Sound
Sound is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. On the islands, wind and salt spray are hard on outside sealant.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Anderson High School, movement joints, cladding joints and gutters on larger buildings need the same care as a house’s.

Good habits help new joints last longer. A few tips:
- Wash walls gently around the sealant
- Ask before painting over external sealant
- Point out the joints to other trades
- Check external joints each spring
Have a quick look at the joints each spring. Splits, gaps at the edges or plants in the joint are early warning signs.
Once a joint cannot move, the wall finds another way, often as cracks near the joint. Resealing it early helps prevent that.
The process
On the day, we start by going over the job with you. We protect the surfaces around the joints before any work begins. The work generally takes anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building. In smaller Scottish places, parking is normally less of an issue than access and distance. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints, and the visit is planned around that.
- We start by walking round the building and agreeing the joints and the access.
- Every bit of old sealant and any mortar or debris is cut out.
- Joint faces are cleaned back and primed if the sealant needs it.
- We fit closed-cell backing rod to control the depth.
- The exterior sealant is applied, tooled and checked along its length.
Getting ready for the visit
- Move anything stored near the joints
- For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can
- Mention any leaks or damp you’ve noticed
Getting a quote
Call for a quick quote, or send an email if you’d rather. Tell us about the joints that need doing and we’ll explain what’s involved before giving you a price.
Advice
What affects the cost of external mastic
The price is agreed before any work begins. It’s based on:
- The type of sealant required
- The size of the job
- The old material and how stubborn it is
- Working hours on commercial sites
Doing several joints on one visit is normally more efficient than separate visits, so tell us about everything that needs sealing. You will get one clear quote for the whole job.
Helping us quote
You do not need to know the technical terms. Just tell us:
- Access, such as stairs, a lift or height
- Photos by email, if that is easy
- The type of property
- Roughly how big the job is
We don’t publish a price list, as no two jobs are quite the same. Instead, we give you a clear quote for your job. To arrange one, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.
Leave it or put it right?
The longer a joint stays open, the more water the wall takes in. Wet masonry is more easily damaged by frost, so the damage spreads beyond the joint. In an older home around Sound, damp from a failed joint can get into timber and plaster, which is a far bigger job than the sealant.
We don’t show prices on the website, because the cost depends so much on the job itself. Call for a quick quote and we’ll talk you through it.

Sound: your questions answered
Is external mastic in a coastal place like Sound any different?
Near the coast, wind-driven rain and, nearer the shore, salt air make outside sealant work harder. The right product, a clean joint and the right depth all help it cope.
Can you do external mastic in Sound?
Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Sound is part of that. Just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job.
When will the joints need doing again?
There’s no fixed answer: joints on exposed walls or with a lot of movement age sooner. Check them each year and reseal when they split or harden. Every job carries our one-year guarantee.
How long before the joint can be used?
Many sealants skin over quickly but take longer to cure fully. We will tell you how long to leave the joint before we leave.
Are you insured?
Yes. We are fully insured.
Is there any odour?
Some sealants have a smell while they cure. Ventilation helps.
Is it worth trying it myself?
For a simple, easy-to-reach joint, a careful DIYer can do a reasonable job. Most DIY failures come from sealing over old material, wet joints or too much sealant.
Do you hold any approvals?
Yes. We hold ARBOMaster approved applicator status and we are fully insured too.
Signs you need external mastic in Sound
Using the wrong sealant is another common reason. A stiff, general-purpose sealant can’t cope with a joint that moves a lot, and it tears off the sides.
Common reasons people contact us are:
- Brick movement joints where the sealant has split
- Weathered mastic that no longer stretches
- Cracked joints where brick meets render or frames
- Panel joints letting water in
Around Sound, as everywhere, external mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it.
Before booking anyone
- Whether the sealant suits the joint
- How much experience the applicator has
- How long to leave it before use
- Is the old sealant removed completely?
