External & façade joints in Kalliness, Shetland Islands
Movement joints in Kalliness need attention? We remove the old material, prepare the joints and seal them properly, and the work is guaranteed for a year.
- Brick movement joints where the sealant has split
- Joints where the bead has come unstuck
- Gaps where render, brick and frames meet
External mastic in Kalliness
Joints between dissimilar materials, like brick against render or concrete against a steel frame, see movement from both sides. A flexible sealant bridges the two where mortar or filler would crack. If you have weeds or debris growing in open joints and failed sealant between panels on a façade, we can help, on copings & trims, joints between brick and frames and façade panels alike.
Stone walls need a stone-friendly sealant, as acetoxy products can attack some stone. On newer homes, the movement joints and roofline trims are what need watching.
You get a one-year guarantee, the same in Kalliness as everywhere else we work.

What sealant work cannot fix
Sealant is not the answer to every problem, and we’d rather say so up front. Sealant will not put right:
- Cracked brickwork or render that needs a builder or plasterer
- Loose or hollow render, which needs re-rendering
- Structural movement, which needs a surveyor or engineer

Your questions about external mastic in Kalliness
Do you cover Kalliness for external mastic?
Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Kalliness is part of that. Just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job.
Is Kalliness within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work across all of Scotland, including the islands, where work is planned around ferry crossings. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Will the new joint stand out?
We aim for a joint that suits the wall rather than one that jumps out. Colour is agreed with you before we begin.
What sealant do you use?
The product depends on the job: anti-fungal sanitary silicone in wet areas, and other sealants where joints move or face the weather. Brands we use include Arbo and Everbuild.
How long does the job take?
That depends on how much there is to do, but most jobs take a few hours for a handful of joints, longer for a whole elevation. We’ll tell you when we quote.
Do you work for landlords and businesses?
Yes. As well as homeowners, we work for landlords, agents, businesses and hotels.
Is it worth trying it myself?
For a simple, easy-to-reach joint, a careful DIYer can do a reasonable job. Most DIY failures come from sealing over old material, wet joints or too much sealant.
Is it OK to seal over old sealant?
No. Fresh sealant does not stick to old sealant, and it traps any mould or water underneath. It all has to come out first.
What happens on the day
The work is kept neat and contained to the joints we are treating. The job normally takes a few hours for a handful of joints, longer for a whole elevation, and we tell you how long to leave it before we go. Around Kalliness, distance and access matter more than parking. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints.
- Each joint is checked and the colour of the new sealant agreed.
- We take out the old sealant until the faces are sound.
- Closed-cell backing rod is pushed in so the sealant bonds to two sides only.
- Primer is applied wherever the sealant needs it.
- We gun in low-modulus sealant and tool it neatly.

For landlords and businesses
If you manage several properties in or around Kalliness, jobs at different addresses can go on one quote. Just tell us the addresses and what each one needs.
Water getting past a failed joint can damage the building, which matters even more when someone else lives there. Keeping joints in good order is simple maintenance.
Do you need external mastic in Kalliness?
Weeds, moss and debris in a joint are a sign the sealant has gone. Roots and dirt hold water against the wall.
The problems people generally mention when they call are:
- Failed sealant between panels on a façade
- Weeds or debris growing in open joints
- Brick movement joints where the sealant has split
- Old sealant gone brittle and cracked
Whether the job is in Kalliness itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.
What to look for in a quote
- How long to leave it before use
- What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
- What insurance they hold
- How much experience the applicator has
Can I do it myself?
The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is, and the work is guaranteed for a year.
If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.
How to look after the new joints
So the new joints stay in good condition:
- Wash walls gently around the sealant
- Keep soil, plants and ivy away from the joints
- Make sure movement joints are not pointed over
- Act on the first splits you see
Don’t paint over the new sealant unless we’ve said the product is paintable. Many exterior sealants aren’t designed to be painted and spoil the finish.
Act while the splits are small. At that stage it’s a simple cut out and reseal with no damage behind it to deal with.
Walls and rooflines in Kalliness
Kalliness is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That is hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, especially on the side facing the sea. Plenty of Scottish homes have harled walls, and joints where harling meets other materials need a sealant that can grip and flex.
Around Kalliness, as everywhere, external mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Larger places within reach include Lerwick (7 miles south-east), Sound (7 miles south-east), Scalloway (6 miles south) and Brae (12 miles north). Why deal with it now?
Done well, a resealed joint is a neat, straight line that suits the wall. A hurried job with smeared edges and no backing looks worse and fails sooner so it’s worth doing right. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.
The cost depends on the size of the job, how hard the old material is to remove and access to the work. We give a clear quote before any work starts.
