External mastic in Alyth, done properly
Short cuts in external joints show up within a season or two. Overfilled joints, missing backing rod and sealant laid over old sealant all tend to fail early. We take the old material out and do it properly. We work on render & cladding joints, copings & trims and joints between brick and frames, and common reasons people get in touch are joints pointed up with cement by mistake and cracked joints where brick meets render or frames.
Stone walls need a stone-friendly sealant, as acetoxy products can attack some stone. On newer homes, the movement joints and roofline trims are what need watching.
We guarantee the work for a year. If something is not right with it in that time, tell us and we’ll put it right.

Why act early in Alyth
Water gets in through a failed movement joint. Resealing early keeps the job to the joint itself, rather than the wall around it. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.
Homes and businesses are quoted the same way: the amount of work, the access and the products needed. Call for a quick quote and we will explain what it covers.

Different surfaces, different methods
Concrete and blockwork
Blockwork and concrete shrink over time and move with the seasons. We reseal their joints with backing rod and a flexible product.
Joints between dissimilar materials
Different materials may need different primers. Both surfaces are cleaned and primed as the product requires.
Looking after it afterwards
Simple care keeps the joints in good condition. Our advice:
- Point out the joints to other trades
- Keep high-pressure jets off the joints
- Don’t let climbing plants root in the sealant
- Fix overflowing gutters above sealed joints
Only paint over the joint if we have confirmed the sealant can take paint. Paint can crack on a flexible joint.
Leave a failed movement joint and water keeps getting into the wall. That can lead to damp patches, staining and frost damage, all bigger jobs than a reseal.
How we quote for external mastic
Every job gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:
- How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove
- When we can work, for business premises
- Whether the work is at height
- Any mould that needs treating
Every job is a little different, so each one gets its own quote. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all make a difference.
What we need to know
To help us quote quickly, let us know:
- Whether it has been sealed before
- The address or postcode of the job
- How many joints, rooms or windows are involved
- Any access issues, like height or stairs
Asking for a quote is easy: tell us what needs doing and where, and roughly how big it is. A few pictures by email make the job easier to understand.
When it isn’t the sealant
In fairness, there are a few things sealant will not fix:
- Failed render or damaged cladding panels
- Damp from another source, such as a leaking gutter or a bridged damp-proof course
- Subsidence or other structural problems
If in doubt, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll say what we think.

For landlords and businesses
Whether it’s one flat or a portfolio, you get the same standard of work: the old material taken out, careful preparation and a 12-month guarantee.
In hotels, rooms out of use cost money, so the work can be planned room by room. We have worked in hotels as well as homes and businesses.
FAQs for Alyth
Do you cover Alyth for external mastic?
Yes, Alyth is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing.
Is Alyth within the area you cover?
Yes. Alyth is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across all of Scotland. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
What information do you need?
A short description and the location, plus pictures if you have them. We’ll ask anything else we need to know.
What sealant do you use?
The product depends on the job: anti-fungal sanitary silicone in wet areas, and other sealants where joints move or face the weather. Brands we use include Arbo and Everbuild.
Will the new joint stand out?
We choose a sealant colour to suit the brick, stone or render so the joint blends in. Exterior sealants come in a good range of colours.
I’m a tenant. Can you help?
We’re happy to deal with the tenant, landlord or agent. Get your landlord’s agreement first.
What is a movement joint?
A vertical gap in a long brick wall is normally a movement joint. It lets the bricks expand without cracking, and it should be sealed with a flexible sealant.
Do you use backing rod?
Closed-cell backing rod sets the depth of the sealant and stops it sticking to the back of the joint. That way it bonds to the two sides only and can stretch.
Walls and rooflines in Alyth
Private landlords in Scotland must meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping a home wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that. Harled (roughcast) walls are common in Scotland, and where harling meets frames, pipes and other materials, the joint needs a flexible sealant that grips a rough surface.
Homes close to Parish Church include some older properties, and older walls, gutters and the joints where extensions meet them need a flexible sealant. In and around Alyth, as anywhere, good external mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

How it works
There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us the job and we’ll take it from there. The work itself takes anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building from start to finish. For a place like Alyth, longer drives are planned in advance. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.
- Each joint is checked and the colour of the new sealant agreed.
- We take out the old sealant until the faces are sound.
- Backing rod goes in so the sealant can stretch between the two faces.
- Primer is applied wherever the sealant needs it.
- We gun in low-modulus sealant and tool it neatly.
How to prepare
- Clear the area around the work
- Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts
- Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises
