Bathroom resealing for Russland homes and businesses

How we handle bathroom resealing in Russland

The secret of a lasting bead is the preparation. Every bit of old silicone comes out, down to the thin film left on the tiles, then the joint is cleaned, degreased and treated for mould. Only once it’s dry does the new bead go on. If you’re dealing with leaks into the floor or ceiling below and black mould in the silicone that won’t clean off, we can help.

Bathrooms in smaller places like Russland work just as hard as those in the cities. Limescale is less of a problem with Scotland’s generally soft water, but mould still takes hold in damp sealant and grout.

You get a 12-month guarantee, the same in Russland as everywhere else we work.

What happens on the day

Most of a good job is in the preparation, and we do not rush it. Every joint is cleaned and dried before new material goes in. In total, it generally takes a couple of hours for a single bath or shower. Somewhere like Russland may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. First the area is protected and every bit of old sealant removed, including the film left on the tiles.
  2. The joint is cleaned, degreased and treated for mould.
  3. The joint is left to dry, and baths are filled with water first.
  4. New anti-fungal silicone goes on in a colour to suit and is tooled to a clean finish.
  5. We tidy up and give you the cure time, usually around 24 hours.

Advice

Different surfaces, different methods

Sinks & splashbacks

Next to the sink, the sealant has to cope with constant water, and a food-safe product where it’s needed. The joint is laid neatly so it’s easy to wipe.

Shower trays & enclosures

Shower trays are sealed to the wall, and enclosures are sealed to the tray and tiles. Both get soaked every time the shower runs, so each is cut out and renewed with anti-fungal sanitary silicone.

Keeping the joints in good condition

A little care helps the new joints last. Our advice:

  • Clean with a mild bathroom cleaner and a soft cloth
  • Dry worktop joints after washing up
  • Keep the fan on for a while after bathing
  • Give the silicone its full cure time

Check the sealant now and then. A small split or a corner lifting is easy to spot, so if something doesn’t look right, just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Do not wait for a refit to deal with failed sealant. Sealant is a maintenance item, like the paint on a window frame, and renewing it as soon as it fails protects everything around it.

What affects the quote in Russland

Every job gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:

  • Any mould that needs treating
  • Which sealant suits the joint
  • How much there is to do
  • The number of rooms or windows

What it costs depends on the size of the job, how much old material has to come out and how easy the joints are to reach. You’ll have a clear quote before any work starts, so you know where you stand.

What to tell us for a quote

Before you ask for a quote, have a think about:

  • Whether it’s a home or a business
  • Pictures of the joints, sent by email
  • Any access issues, like height or stairs
  • How many joints, rooms or windows are involved

For a quick quote, get us on the phone, or send an email if you’d rather. Tell us about the joints that need doing and we will talk you through the work and give you a clear price.

What bathroom resealing looks like in Russland

Russland is close to the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that does not dry out.

Whether the job is in Russland itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish. Around Russland, as everywhere, bathroom resealing is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Russland is about 10 miles north-west of Kirkwall, in the Orkney Islands. From the centre of Russland to the outskirts, bathroom resealing is available for homes and businesses alike. Russland is one of 51 towns and villages in the Orkney Islands we cover for bathroom resealing.

Work in KW17 works the same way as everywhere else we cover. If you are just outside Russland, we cover Hourston (1 mile north), Harray (1 mile east), Bimbister (2 miles south-east), Tenston (2 miles south-west) and Dounby (2 miles north). For island and remote addresses, the job takes a little more planning, so mention it when you ask for a quote.

DIY versus a professional finish

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.

A DIY attempt does not rule out a professional job. We remove it and do the joint properly, so tell us about it when you ask for a quote.

Why act early in Russland

Bleach and mould sprays may lighten black marks for a while, but mould that has grown into the sealant tends to return. The lasting answer is to remove the bead and start again. In an older home around Russland, damp from a failed joint can get into timber and plaster.

Commercial jobs are quoted on the same basis as homes: the amount of work, the access and the products needed, along with when we can work on site. Ask us for a quote and we will explain what it covers.

Common questions in Russland

Is Russland within the area you cover?

Yes. Russland is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, including the islands, where work is planned around ferry crossings. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Will you leave a mess?

We keep the work tidy. Nearby surfaces are protected.

Can mouldy silicone be sorted out?

Yes, we can. We strip the bead, treat the joint and lay new anti-fungal silicone.

Do you do commercial work?

Yes, regularly. Larger jobs can be planned room by room or area by area to suit the site.

Do you reseal kitchen worktops and sinks too?

Yes. The old sealant is cut out and the joint degreased, because cooking grease stops silicone sticking, then we reseal in a colour to suit.

Yes, we do. Domestic, commercial and hotel work are all part of what we do.

How long does it take to reseal a bath or shower?

It takes a morning or an afternoon for most single baths and showers. We’ll confirm how long your job needs when we quote.

What we can’t put right

Honest advice matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what new sealant won’t do:

  • Failed grout lines across the wall
  • Tiles that have come away from the wall
  • A tray that rocks until it’s re-bedded

If you’re not sure, just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you a straight answer before booking.
