Frames and glazing around Russland

Russland is close to the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That is hard on the mastic around window and door frames, especially on the side facing the sea. Island weather, with its wind and salt spray, is tough on the mastic around window and door frames.

Historic houses such as Skaill House, about 4.2 miles west, show how far back building around Russland goes, and older homes nearby need a sealant that suits their walls.

Russland is about 10 miles north-west of Kirkwall, in the Orkney Islands. Every kind of property in Russland can book us for window mastic. The work is guaranteed for a year. Across the Orkney Islands, we cover 51 places, and Russland is one of them.

About our window mastic in Russland

A window frame and the wall around it expand and shrink at different rates. Plastic and aluminium frames move with the temperature, while masonry stays fairly still. So the sealant has to stretch and recover, which is why we use a low-modulus product. We’re often asked to deal with a bead that doesn’t match the frame and leaking joints at the ends of sills, across aluminium frames, window sills and uPVC windows.

Outdoor sealant needs a dry surface, so window work around Russland is planned around the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Let us know about access to every frame, including any upstairs.

All of our work is guaranteed for twelve months, in Russland and everywhere else we cover.

Signs you need window mastic in Russland

Some failures date back to when the windows were fitted. Sealant run over dust, wet brick or loose mortar never bonded as it should, and it lets go sooner than it should.

The problems people usually mention when they call include:

  • Old mastic that has gone black or come away
  • White mastic on grey or black frames
  • Cold air getting in at the frame edge
  • Cracked or shrunken mastic around the frame

In and around Russland, as anywhere, good window mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Who does the work, and how experienced they are
  • Whether you can choose the colour
  • What the cure time is
  • What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant

10 questions to ask before you book

Should I try it myself first?

What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions.

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone will not bond to old, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.

Russland: your questions answered

Is Russland within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, including the islands, where work is planned around ferry crossings. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Does living near the coast affect window mastic in Russland?

Coastal weather is harder on outside sealant: there’s more wind-driven rain and, closer to the shore, salt in the air. The right product, a clean joint and the right depth all help it cope.

Can you match the sealant to my frames?

Yes. White, brown, anthracite grey, black and clear sealants are all available, so the joint suits the frame.

Are you an approved applicator?

Yes. We’re ARBOMaster approved, the scheme for applicators of Arbo sealants.

I’m a tenant. Can you help?

Yes, though it’s best to check with your landlord first. Landlords are often happy for the work to be arranged.

Does the work come with a guarantee?

Yes. Every job comes with our one-year guarantee, and we’re fully insured.

Do you remove the old sealant?

Yes, always, and completely. New silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so the joint is cleaned back first.

Where are you based?

We’re based in Crawley, and we work across South East England, London and Scotland.

What we do, step by step

Good joint work is mostly preparation, and we do not rush it. Joints are cleaned back and dried before anything new goes in. All told, the work takes a few hours for a handful of frames, longer for a whole house. Outdoor work around Russland depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Work indoors isn’t affected.

  1. First, we confirm safe access to each frame.
  2. All the failed sealant is cut away, along with any loose debris.
  3. Frame and wall are cleaned and must be dry before sealing, and primed where the sealant calls for it.
  4. Backing rod fills deep voids and the sealant goes in on top.
  5. The joint is shaped to shed water and the area tidied.

How to prepare

  • For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in
  • Keep pets and children clear of the area while we work
  • Clear items away from the joints we are working on

Advice

How the job changes by surface

Timber windows & doors

Older timber windows in stone or brick can suit sand mastic rather than modern sealant. We will tell you which suits your home.

uPVC windows

We clean the frame edge carefully so the plastic is not marked, then the sealant goes in between frame and wall.

Why it’s worth doing now in Russland

Getting a straight, even bead on an outside frame takes practice, especially upstairs. A professional job is cut out properly, backed where needed and finished neatly, in a sealant suited to the wall. In an older home around Russland, damp from a failed joint can get into timber and plaster, which is a far bigger job than the sealant.

A few things move the cost up or down: the old material and how easily it comes out, whether mould needs treating, and whether the work is at height. Your quote takes all of that into account.

How to look after the new joints

Joint life depends on how it’s used and looked after. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Avoid blasting the frames with a pressure washer
  • Keep drainage slots and sill grooves clear
  • Look round the frames every year or so
  • Ventilate rooms so frames do not stay wet inside

A yearly look round the frames is enough. Cracks and lifting edges are easy to spot early.

Water trapped behind a failed joint can start rot in timber frames and sills. Once wood has rotted, it needs repair before it can be sealed, so it pays to reseal before that happens.
