Sealant that’s mouldy, cracked or peeling is worth sorting before it lets water through. Just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with a photo of the joints, and you’ll get a clear quote before any work starts. We work on wet rooms, shower trays & enclosures and basins & vanity units, and people most often call us about failed sealant on the screen profile and a reseal done over the top of the old bead.

A bathroom in a place like Kilchoan gets the same daily wear as one in a city flat. Limescale is less of a problem with Scotland’s generally soft water, but mould still takes hold in damp sealant and grout.

We stand behind the work with a one-year guarantee, so you’re covered after we’ve gone.

Looking after it afterwards

So the new joints stay in good condition:

  • Give the silicone its full cure time
  • Keep scourers and sharp tools away from the bead
  • Keep bottles off the sealant line
  • Squeegee the walls and tray after use

Have a look at the joints every few months. Small splits and lifting ends are easy to catch early, and if anything looks wrong, just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Each shower pushes a little more water through a failed joint. Over time that water reaches floors, walls and ceilings. Resealing early stops it.

How the visit works

We work through the job in order: protect, prepare, seal, tidy. For most jobs that takes around two hours for one bath or shower, longer for a whole bathroom. Somewhere like Kilchoan may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. First, each joint is checked for movement and signs of water.
  2. The old silicone is cut out completely, along with the film it leaves on the tiles.
  3. The joint is cleaned, degreased and treated for mould.
  4. With the joint dry, and any bath loaded with water, a single bead of anti-fungal silicone is applied.
  5. The bead is tooled smooth and you’re told the cure time, normally around 24 hours.

Before we arrive

  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
  • Let us know if you’ve seen damp or leaks
  • Clear the area around the work

Advice

How the job changes by surface

Baths

Acrylic baths give a little under load, while steel and cast iron baths move less but still settle when full. Loading the bath with water before sealing allows for it.

Kitchen worktops & upstands

Water behind a laminate worktop can make the edge swell. A sound joint along the back edge stops that, as long as the worktop itself is firmly fixed.

What affects the cost of bathroom resealing

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:

  • The amount of work
  • When we can work, for business premises
  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
  • Mould in or behind the old joints

What you pay reflects the work, not a rough estimate. That is why we ask about the job first and give you a clear quote before work begins.

What we need to know

Before you ask for a quote, have a think about:

  • Whether it has been sealed before
  • How we’d reach the joints
  • What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking
  • The address or postcode of the job

If you’re in Kilchoan and need bathroom resealing, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk. A short description of the job and where it is helps us quote, and we will agree the price before any work begins.

What we’re called out for in Kilchoan

Not every tube in the shop is meant for a shower. Acrylic caulk and general-purpose sealants aren’t designed for a joint that is wet every day, so they crack, discolour or grow mould quickly. Wet areas call for a sanitary silicone with an anti-fungal additive.

If you can see any of these, it’s time to have the joints looked at:

  • Water getting behind the kitchen upstand
  • Damp behind the bath or under the tray
  • Splits where the tray meets the wall
  • Smears of silicone across the tiles

If you live in an older home near Ardnamurchan Parish Church of Scotland, bathrooms in older houses have often been refitted more than once, with sealant laid over sealant.

What to look for in a quote

  • How long the guarantee is
  • How much experience the applicator has
  • Whether they seal over old material or remove it
  • Whether VAT is included

Kilchoan: your questions answered

Can you do bathroom resealing in Kilchoan?

Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Kilchoan is part of that. You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing.

Will you come out to Kilchoan?

Yes, we do. We work across all of Scotland, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Do you work for hotels and businesses?

Yes, regularly. Larger jobs can be planned room by room or area by area.

Do you reseal kitchen worktops and sinks too?

Yes. The old sealant is cut out and the joint degreased, because cooking grease stops silicone sticking, then a colour-matched bead is laid.

Can you do several jobs on one visit?

Yes, and it often makes sense. Combining jobs makes good use of the visit.

Will you leave a mess?

Not at all. We work neatly, protect the area around the joints and tidy up afterwards.

Should I try DIY first?

For a simple, easy-to-reach joint, a careful DIYer can do a reasonable job. Most DIY failures come from sealing over old material, wet joints or too much sealant.

Which products do you use?

It depends on the joint: sanitary silicone where it gets wet, and sealants suited to movement or weather elsewhere. We use products from Arbo and Everbuild.

Bathroom resealing around Kilchoan

Kilchoan is close to the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black.

In and around Kilchoan, as anywhere, good bathroom resealing starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

DIY versus a professional finish

Not every job suits DIY: work at height, external movement joints, fire-rated sealant and large areas call for the right materials, safe access and experience.

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.
