About our bathroom resealing in Ashton

It isn’t only bathrooms. The joint between worktop and wall, the edge of the sink and the bottom of the splashback all take splashes every day, and water behind a laminate worktop can make it swell. We reseal them with a kitchen-suitable silicone, matched to the worktop where it’s on show. We work on kitchen worktops & upstands, baths and wet rooms, and people most often call us about black mould in the silicone that won’t clean off and two layers of silicone, both failing.

Being further from a city doesn’t change the work: everything old is cut out, the joints are cleaned and dried, and new sealant or grout goes in. We just plan the journey and access beforehand.

Every job is covered by a one-year guarantee.

What bathroom resealing looks like in Ashton

Ashton is close to the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black.

Schools such as Gourock High School are buildings too, and washroom and kitchen sealant there needs the same care as at home, and schools and businesses are part of our work as well as homes.

How the job changes by surface

Shower trays & enclosures

There are generally two jobs in a shower: the tray-to-wall joint and the enclosure joints. Both get soaked every time the shower runs, so each is cut out and renewed with anti-fungal sanitary silicone.

Wet rooms

Wet room floors move slightly as they’re used, so the corners need a flexible seal, not grout. Where grout in a corner has cracked, we can replace it with sealant.

What we’re called out for in Ashton

Plenty of failed sealant has been laid over the top of older sealant. Fresh silicone cannot grip the old bead underneath, so it lifts, lets water in and traps mould underneath.

Keep an eye out for these signs:

  • Black spots spreading through the bead
  • Failed sealant on the screen profile
  • Gaps between the worktop and the wall
  • Lumpy, uneven sealant from a DIY attempt

Letting a property close to Gourock station? Then a reseal between tenants is a quick way to make the bathroom and kitchen look cared for.

10 questions to ask before you book

Landlord and commercial work in Ashton

For anyone letting property in or around Ashton, several properties can go on one quote. Just tell us the addresses and what each one needs.

Housing providers, facilities teams and property managers book us too. We can quote a run of properties together, and we’re fully insured for the work.

Leave it or put it right?

Running new silicone over the old joint can look tidy for a few weeks, but it can’t stick to what’s underneath. Water creeps under it and mould follows. In a place like Ashton, small leaks are easy to put off, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.

There are no prices on our website, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a quick quote, please drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll talk you through it.

DIY versus a professional finish

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.

Keeping the joints in good condition

So the new joints stay in good condition:

  • Keep bottles off the sealant line
  • Dry worktop joints after washing up
  • Check the joints every few months for splits or lifting
  • Open a window or run the fan so the room dries

Keep water off the new bead until it has cured, following the cure time we give you. Once it’s cured, wiping it down after use keeps it looking new.

Do not wait for a refit to deal with failed sealant. Sealant is a maintenance item, like the paint on a window frame, and replacing it when it fails protects the rest of the room.

Common questions in Ashton

Is Ashton within the area you cover?

Yes, Ashton is covered. We work across all of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Do you cover Ashton for bathroom resealing?

Yes, Ashton is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us what needs doing.

Are you insured?

Yes, we are fully insured.

How long will the resealing take?

A single bath or shower takes about a couple of hours, including cutting out the old sealant. A full bathroom and kitchen can take most of a day.

Can landlords and businesses book you?

Yes. We work for homeowners, landlords, letting agents, businesses and hotels.

Do I have to be there?

Access is agreed with you when the job is booked. Indoors, that normally means someone at home.

Do you reseal kitchen worktops and sinks too?

Yes. We reseal worktop upstands, sinks and splashbacks, in a kitchen-suitable sealant, matched to the worktop where it’s on show.

Should I try DIY first?

Sometimes. Preparation is everything: all the old sealant out, and a clean, dry joint. If it doesn’t work out, we can redo it.

What happens on the day

The work is kept neat and contained to the joints we’re treating. Expect the work to take half a day or less for one room, longer when the kitchen is included, and we tell you how long to leave it before we go. Outdoor work around Ashton depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.

  1. Protection goes down around the bath, shower or worktop.
  2. Old sealant is sliced away and the residue removed.
  3. We treat any mould and let the joint dry properly.
  4. Baths are filled first, then anti-fungal sanitary silicone is applied in a colour to suit.
  5. The joint is finished neatly and we explain when it can get wet.
