Bathroom resealing in Aith

Should I try it myself first?

Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, such as a straightforward joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.

How we handle bathroom resealing in Aith

The secret of a lasting bead is the preparation. Every bit of old silicone comes out, down to the thin film left on the tiles, after which the joint is degreased and any mould treated. Only once it’s dry does the new bead go on. Common call-outs are for a messy, uneven bead from a previous reseal and two layers of silicone, both failing, on baths, sinks & splashbacks and kitchen worktops & upstands.

Bathrooms in smaller places like Aith work just as hard as those in the cities. Generally soft Scottish water means less limescale, but steam still lets mould into sealant and grout.

The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If there’s a problem with our work within the year, let us know and we’ll sort it.

Common questions in Aith

Do you cover smaller places like Aith?

Yes, Aith is covered. We work across all of Scotland, islands included, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Is Aith in your area for bathroom resealing?

Yes, Aith is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing.

Is there any odour?

Possibly a little. Any smell clears as the sealant cures.

Can tenants book the work?

We are happy to deal with the tenant, landlord or agent. Just make sure your landlord agrees.

Do I have to be there?

If the work is inside, we need someone to let us in. Once we’ve agreed the job, you do not need to watch us work.

Is it messy?

Not at all. The area is protected while we work and cleaned up afterwards.

Can you do several jobs on one visit?

Yes, and it often makes sense. Combining jobs makes good use of the visit, so mention them when you ask for a quote.

What do you put in the joint?

Each joint gets the product that suits it. Movement, water and weather all affect the choice.

Landlord and commercial work in Aith

Businesses can book us for washrooms, kitchens, offices and more. For commercial premises, we can talk through working times when we quote.

Housing providers, facilities teams and property managers book us too in Aith and across the Shetland Islands. Several sites can be quoted together, and we are fully insured for the work.

How we quote for bathroom resealing

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:

  • The old material and how stubborn it is
  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
  • When we can work, for business premises
  • Which sealant suits the joint

The cost depends on the size of the job, how much old material has to come out and how easy the joints are to reach. You’ll have a clear quote before any work starts.

Helping us quote

Before you ask for a quote, have a think about:

  • Whether it has been sealed before
  • Where the property is
  • A few photos by email, if you can
  • How many joints, rooms or windows are involved

It all starts with a short chat. Describe the problem, the location and the size of the job. Whenever you are ready, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

How the visit works

Most of a good job is in the preparation, and we do not rush it. Joints are cleaned back and dried before anything new goes in. All told, the work takes a morning or an afternoon for most single baths and showers. Outside jobs in Aith need a dry day, because sealant will not bond to a wet joint, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Work indoors isn’t affected.

  1. First, each joint is checked for movement and signs of water.
  2. The old silicone is cut out completely, along with the film it leaves on the tiles.
  3. The joint is cleaned, degreased and treated for mould.
  4. When the joint is dry, and a bath has been filled with water, the new silicone goes on.
  5. We tool the bead to a neat finish and give you the cure time, normally around 24 hours.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts
  • Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive
  • Clear items away from the joints we are working on

How to get a quote

A good description makes for an accurate quote. Let us know the location, the problem and roughly how many joints.

Looking after it afterwards

Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Don’t let bottles sit on the bead
  • Let new sealant cure fully before it gets wet
  • Keep the fan on for a while after bathing
  • Stick to a soft cloth and a mild cleaner

Mould needs damp, so keep the room aired. Run the extractor fan during and after a shower, so the bead dries out between uses.

Small signs come before a leak: lifting ends, gaps, dark shadows under the bead or a stain downstairs. Any of these means the joint needs attention.

What sealant work cannot fix

A few problems are outside what sealant work can do:

  • Movement from a bath with loose feet or no proper support
  • Water coming from the plumbing rather than the joint
  • A tray or bath that’s cracked through

If you’re not sure, just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Surfaces we seal

  • Baths
  • Wet rooms
  • Sinks & splashbacks
  • Shower trays & enclosures
  • Kitchen worktops & upstands
  • Basins & vanity units

Common problems we fix in Aith

No sealant lasts indefinitely. Daily water, heat and cleaning products slowly wear it down, so its life depends on how the room is used, cleaned and aired.

It’s worth asking for a quote if you see:

  • Gaps where the bath or tray has moved
  • Smears of silicone across the tiles
  • Leaking joints on a shower screen
  • A reseal done over the top of the old bead

For an older house near a landmark such as Aith Church, older homes can move a little, which is hard on rigid grout and tired sealant.

Comparing quotes

  • Whether they seal over old material or remove it
  • What insurance they hold
  • How hidden problems are handled
  • What the quote includes, VAT included or not
