Your questions about window mastic in Askomill

Do you cover smaller places like Askomill?

Yes. Askomill is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across all of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Do you cover Askomill for window mastic?

Yes, Askomill is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job, and we will send you a clear quote.

Will new mastic stop draughts?

Yes, if the air is getting in around the frame. If it’s coming through the window seals, we’ll tell you.

Can you do the inside joint as well?

Yes. Draughts often come through the inside gap too, so it can be worth sealing both.

What sealant do you use?

We choose the sealant for the joint, not the other way round. Movement, water and weather all affect the choice, and we will tell you what we’re using.

Will there be a smell?

It depends on the product. Some smell for a while, some hardly at all, and any smell fades as they cure.

Can tenants book the work?

We’re happy to deal with the tenant, landlord or agent. Get your landlord’s agreement first.

Can you reach windows above the ground floor?

Yes, in most cases. Access is planned before we start, so mention the height and anything in the way.

Window mastic in Askomill, done properly

There are two joints on most windows. Outside, the mastic keeps rain out; inside, the joint between frame and plaster stops draughts and tidies the reveal. We seal one or both, depending on what’s needed. We are often asked to deal with a bead that doesn’t match the frame and gaps left after new windows were fitted, on window sills, aluminium frames and uPVC windows.

In and around a place like Askomill, homes range from older stone-built cottages to newer houses. Exposed frames and sills take the full force of wind-driven rain, so the mastic there works hard.

A 12-month guarantee comes as standard, so you are covered after we have gone.

Should I try it myself first?

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and doesn’t move well, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

What window mastic looks like in Askomill

Askomill is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. Both are hard on the mastic around window and door frames, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Historic houses like Tirfergus House (about 4.1 miles south-west) are a reminder that the area around Askomill has older buildings as well as new. In older buildings, older frames set in brick or stone need a sealant that suits them, and sometimes that is traditional sand mastic.

Around Askomill, as everywhere, window mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it. Tirfergus House, about 4.1 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Askomill.

What affects the cost of window mastic

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:

  • Whether the work is at height
  • Working hours on commercial sites
  • How many areas need sealing
  • The type of sealant required

We do not show prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a quick quote.

What we need to know

When you call or email, these details help:

  • What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking
  • Where the job is, and your postcode
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • Roughly how big the job is

The more we know about the job, the more useful the quote. Tell us where the job is, what’s wrong and how much there is, and add photos by email if you can.

Surface by surface

Window sills

Every drop off the glass ends up on the sill, so the joints at each end and underneath matter. Each is cleaned out and resealed.

Patio & French doors

Water at the foot of a door frame isn’t always the mastic: blocked drain slots, worn brush seals and threshold details can let water in too. We check before we reseal.

How it works

All our tools and materials come with us in the van, so you do not need to buy or prepare anything. After a quick look at the joints together, we protect the area and start. Most jobs take anything from an hour or two to a full day, depending on how many frames there are. Outdoor work around Askomill depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Work indoors isn’t affected.

  1. We check how each frame can be reached safely.
  2. All the failed sealant is cut away.
  3. Frame and wall are cleaned and must be dry before sealing, and primed where the sealant calls for it.
  4. Backing rod fills deep voids and the sealant goes in on top.
  5. The joint is shaped to shed water and the area tidied.

Before we arrive

  • Keep children and pets away from the work area
  • Let us know about parking restrictions
  • Tell us about access, such as stairs, a lift or high-level joints

Advice

Aftercare tips

Aftercare is simple, and it makes a real difference:

  • Keep jet washers away from the mastic
  • Make sure the drainage slots are not blocked
  • Use gentle cleaners on frames and sealant
  • Walk round the house once a year and look at the joints

Try not to touch the new joint while it cures, for as long as we advise. Do not point a pressure washer at the joints.

Water gets in quietly when mastic fails. Often the first sign is a damp patch inside or flaking paint on the reveal. Early resealing stops it reaching that point.

Why deal with it now?

Running fresh sealant over the old joint is tempting, but it will not grip old, dirty sealant. It peels before long, and water still gets in behind. The old mastic has to come out. In an older home around Askomill, damp from a failed joint can get into timber and plaster, which is a far bigger job than the sealant.

The cost reflects the work involved, not a rough estimate. That is why we ask about the job first and agree the price before starting.
