Sand mastic in Taynuilt

About our sand mastic in Taynuilt

Sand mastic does not last for ever, leaving gaps round the window. We rake it out and renew it and tidies the surround. If you have failed mastic on an exposed elevation and tired mastic found when preparing windows for paint, we can help, on stone surrounds, sash and case windows and tenement windows alike.

Across smaller places in Scotland, homes range from stone and harled cottages to newer houses, many standing in the open. Exposed frames and sills take the full force of wind-driven rain, so the mastic there works hard.

All of our work is guaranteed for twelve months, and the guarantee is the same wherever you are.

When something else is needed

To be straight with you, there are a few things sealant will not fix:

  • Putty and glazing repairs
  • Masonry that needs repairing
  • Sashes that need overhauling

If you are not sure, just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you a straight answer.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Brick reveals

  • Period & listed homes
  • Tenement windows
  • Stone surrounds

Different surfaces, different methods

Period and listed homes

On a listed home or in a conservation area, the right material matters. Sand mastic is often the preferred finish.

Tenement and terrace windows

Tenements and terraces often have many sash windows with ageing mastic. We can do one window or several.

What we do, step by step

You do not need to clear the whole room or building before we come, only the area right around the joints. We protect the rest, and the job takes a few hours per window, depending on the condition of the joints for a typical job. Somewhere like Taynuilt may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. Each surround is checked first.
  2. The joint is raked out and cleaned.
  3. Large voids are packed out.
  4. We point the joint with sand mastic by hand.
  5. The finish is dressed neatly.

Preparing for the visit

  • Move anything stored near the joints
  • Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises
  • Keep pets and children clear of the area while we work

DIY sealant or a professional job?

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

If you’ve already had a go yourself, that’s fine. We remove it and do the joint properly, so just mention it when you contact us.

What we are called out for in Taynuilt

Scraping and sanding before painting can loosen old mastic. Many people find it crumbling when they prepare the windows, which is a good time to renew it.

These are the problems we’re asked about most:

  • Gaps where the frame meets the masonry
  • Tired mastic found when preparing windows for paint
  • Modern sealant on a period surround
  • Gaps round a timber door in stone or brick

Letting a property close to Taynuilt station? Then any sash windows need sound mastic to keep draughts and rain out.

  • Is the old sealant removed completely?

How to choose a mastic man

Keeping the joints in good condition

So the new joints stay in good condition:

  • Get any rot dealt with first
  • Go gently near the mastic when preparing windows
  • Check with your local planning authority if your home is listed
  • Don’t paint over the new mastic

Keep paint scrapers and sanders off the mastic when redecorating. It can be damaged by heavy scraping.

Once mastic starts to crumble, rain gets in. It can soak into the frame and the surrounding masonry so early renewal protects both.

Windows and doors in Taynuilt

Taynuilt is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That is hard on the mastic around older windows and doors, especially on the side facing the sea. Taynuilt is in the west of Scotland, which is wetter than the east, so there’s plenty of rain for the mastic around older windows and doors to keep out.

If you live in an older home near Kilespikeral Old Parish Church, frames set in older brick or stone need a sealant that suits the wall as well as the frame.

Taynuilt is about 35 miles north-west of Helensburgh, in Argyll and Bute. Common questions in Taynuilt

Does the coastal weather in Taynuilt affect outside sealant?

Coastal homes put outside sealant through more weather than inland ones, so the choice of sealant and the preparation matter even more. Walls facing the sea are generally the first to need attention.

Is Taynuilt within the area you cover?

Yes, Taynuilt is covered. We work across all of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Do you do commercial work?

Yes. We work in offices, washrooms, hotels and other commercial premises, as well as homes. We can talk about working times when we quote.

What is sand mastic?

It’s a mix of sand and a linseed-oil-based binder. It’s built up in the joint by hand and shaped to suit the surround.

Can new sealant go over the old?

No, because it fails. We remove every bit of old sealant first.

Can you quote for more than one area?

Of course. Combining jobs makes good use of the visit.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. We’re fully insured.

Which products do you use?

We choose the sealant for the joint, not the other way round. Where it moves, gets wet or faces the weather makes a difference.
