Remedial sealant & repairs in Dury, Shetland Islands
Failed sealant joints in Dury need attention? We remove the old material, prepare the joints and seal them properly.
- Thick, messy sealant smeared over tiles
- Dark patches showing through the sealant
- Repeat leaks from the same joint
About our remedial sealant in Dury
Not every leak is a sealant leak. Cracked trays, leaking wastes and faulty valves often look like a sealant problem. When the fault is elsewhere, we say so instead of resealing for the sake of it. We work on shrunken worktop sealant, expansion joints and mouldy bath & shower sealant, and people most often call us about torn expansion joints and smears and lumps from a botched reseal.
A bathroom in a place like Dury gets the same daily wear as one in a city flat. Limescale is less of a problem with Scotland’s generally soft water, but mould still takes hold in damp sealant and grout.
The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If something is not right with it in that time, tell us and we will put it right.

What sealant work cannot fix
We will always be straight with you, so here’s what new sealant will not do:
- A cracked shower tray or bath (that needs repair or replacing)
- A bath, tray or worktop that moves until it’s properly fixed
- Sealant in an older building that needs testing for asbestos first
Not sure which it is? You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly.
Joints and surfaces we work on
- Expansion joints
- Leaking tray & enclosure joints
- Mouldy bath & shower sealant
- Shrunken worktop sealant
- Failed movement joints
- Botched or over-sealed joints
How to look after the new joints
So the new joints stay in good condition:
- Never seal over old silicone
- Find out why the sealant failed first
- Use a soft cloth, not a scourer, on silicone
- Don’t wait for a small gap to become a leak
Watch the joint over the first few weeks, particularly where the original failure was caused by movement. If anything changes, just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.
Do not keep resealing the same joint. Have someone find out why, or the next bead will go the same way.
How it works
At the end, we look at the finished work together and tell you how long to leave it. The visit itself normally takes a few hours for a typical bath or shower, longer where several layers have been applied, depending on how much there is to do. Outside jobs in Dury need a dry day, because sealant will not bond to a wet joint, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.
- The failure is looked at first, so we know whether it’s sealant, movement or water from elsewhere.
- Each layer is cut out and the residue cleaned off.
- Mould is treated and the joint dried.
- We reseal with a product suited to the joint, backed where needed.
- We finish neatly and point out anything that needs another trade.

What affects the cost of remedial sealant
Your quote is based on your job. We look at:
- Which sealant suits the joint
- The number of rooms or windows
- How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove
- Any working-time requirements on site
A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting, as water and mould keep getting in. If you are unsure, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you an honest view and a quote.
Asking for a quote
There’s no need for technical detail. Just tell us:
- Access, such as stairs, a lift or height
- Roughly how big the job is
- Photos by email, if that’s easy
- The type of property
A good description makes for an accurate quote. Tell us where the job is, what’s wrong and how much there is, and add photos by email if you can.
Signs you need remedial sealant in Dury
Silicone only bonds to surfaces that are clean and dry. Soap film, dust, damp or old residue stop it gripping, and the joint starts to come away early.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- Torn expansion joints
- Products that weren’t meant for the joint
- Worktop sealant that has shrunk and split
- Dark patches showing through the sealant
Around Dury, as everywhere, remedial sealant is only as good as the preparation behind it.
What to look for in a quote
- Whether they seal over old material or remove it
- Whether the sealant suits the joint
- What happens if the job turns out different
- Is VAT in the price?

What happens if it’s left?
Ripping out a bathroom isn’t normally needed. When the fittings are sound, stripping and resealing the joints is often enough. Where something else has failed, you’ll hear it from us. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.
Doing several joints on one visit is usually more efficient than separate visits. You’ll get one clear quote for the whole job.

Different surfaces, different methods
Mouldy bath & shower sealant
Mould that has grown into silicone doesn’t clean out for good. The sealant is cut out completely, the joint treated with a mould remover and dried before anti-fungal sanitary silicone goes in.
Movement & expansion joints
Some movement joints have been filled with mortar or grout. We rake that out where it can be removed and seal with a flexible product.
