Aultbea Remedial Sealant
Our applicators work in Aultbea on removing failed, mouldy or leaking sealant and putting it right. Old sealant removed completely, joints prepared properly.
- Floor or wall movement joints that have failed
- Wide, uneven beads that look worse than the old ones
- A shower that leaks however often it’s resealed
How we handle remedial sealant in Aultbea
Movement and expansion joints fail when the sealant can’t stretch. The old sealant comes out and backing goes in to control the depth, then a flexible sealant matched to the movement goes in. Common call-outs are for thick, messy sealant smeared over tiles and movement joints that have split or pulled away, on botched or over-sealed joints, shrunken worktop sealant and leaking tray & enclosure joints.
For a place like Aultbea, the job is the same as anywhere: old material out, joints cleaned and dried, and a fresh, even finish. We just plan the journey and access beforehand.
Our work is backed for twelve months.

What we’re called out for in Aultbea
How a joint is built matters as much as the product. A bead bonded on three sides, or laid too thick, can’t flex, and tears at the first real movement. Backing rod or bond-breaker tape prevents it.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- Torn expansion joints
- Beads that never stuck properly
- Worktop sealant that has shrunk and split
- Repeat leaks from the same joint
In the older streets around Aultbea Church, timber floors under older bathrooms flex, so joints need a sealant that moves with them.
What your quote should include
- The length of the guarantee
- Is the old sealant removed completely?
- Is VAT in the price?
- When the joint can take water or movement
DIY sealant or a professional job?
If you’re set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.
A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.
Remedial sealant in Aultbea: local notes
Aultbea is close to the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. In Scotland, private landlords have to meet the Repairing Standard, which covers keeping fixtures and fittings in a reasonable state of repair. Tired, leaking sealant is worth putting right before a new tenant moves in.
Around Aultbea, as everywhere, remedial sealant is only as good as the preparation behind it.

What we do, step by step
We bring everything the job needs with us. Once we’ve agreed what’s being done, the area is protected and the work begins. Most jobs take a few hours for most joints, depending on how much old sealant has to come out. Outside jobs in Aultbea need a dry day, because sealant won’t bond to a wet joint, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Work indoors is not affected.
- First we find out how and where the joint has failed.
- All the old sealant comes out, including any layers underneath.
- Next, any mould is treated and the joint dried.
- Moving joints get backing and a flexible sealant to suit.
- The new joint is tooled neatly and we explain anything else we found.
Preparing for the visit
- Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
- Mention any parking rules near the property
- On commercial sites, let us know about site rules

What sealant work cannot fix
We’ll always be straight with you, so here’s what new sealant will not do:
- Old mastic in a building from before 2000 that should be checked for asbestos before it’s disturbed
- Failed tanking or loose tiles behind the sealant
- A bath, tray or worktop that moves until it’s properly fixed
Not sure which it is? You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly.
Surfaces we seal
- Botched or over-sealed joints
- Mouldy bath & shower sealant
- Leaking tray & enclosure joints
- Expansion joints
- Shrunken worktop sealant
- Failed movement joints
Keeping the joints in good condition
To keep the joints looking good and working properly:
- Have loose fittings fixed before resealing
- Do not point over movement joints
- Do not add new sealant on top of old
- Check ceilings under showers for marks
Leave the new joint to cure fully before it gets wet or moves: usually around 24 hours, or as long as we advise.
Mould trapped under over-sealed joints spreads unseen. By the time it shows through, the joint is well past saving.
How we quote for remedial sealant
Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:
- Mould in or behind the old joints
- Working hours on commercial sites
- The number of rooms or windows
- The amount of work
Combining jobs into one visit normally makes better use of the time than several visits, so tell us about everything that needs sealing. You’ll get one clear quote for the whole job.
Helping us quote
Before you ask for a quote, have a think about:
- How many joints, rooms or windows are involved
- If someone has resealed it before
- Any access issues, like height or stairs
- What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking
It all starts with a short chat. Tell us what’s wrong, where it is and how much there is, and we’ll explain how we’d tackle it. When it suits you, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.
Questions from Aultbea
Is Aultbea within the area you cover?
Yes. Aultbea is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across all of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
What guarantee comes with remedial sealant in Aultbea?
All our work, in Aultbea and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We are also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.
Can failed expansion joints be resealed?
Yes. The depth is set with backing so the sealant only bonds to the two sides.
What if resealing will not fix my leak?
You will hear it from us. If it’s a cracked tray, a failed valve or a leaking waste, resealing won’t fix it, and we will not reseal for the sake of it.
Do I have to be there?
For indoor joints, yes, someone needs to let us in. After that, you can carry on with your day.
Should I try DIY first?
It depends on the job. Work at height, movement joints, fire-rated gaps and large areas are best left to a professional.
What sealant do you use?
Each joint gets the product that suits it. Movement, water and weather all affect the choice.
Can landlords and businesses book you?
Yes, often. Several properties can go on one quote.
For landlords and businesses
For anyone letting property in or around Aultbea, jobs at different addresses can go on one quote. Just tell us the addresses and what each one needs.
A neglected joint can let water reach the structure, which is a bigger problem in a rented property. Resealing at the right time is simple maintenance.
