Regrouting near Tranent

Regrouting in Tranent, done properly

Regrouting suits shower walls, bathroom floors, kitchen splashbacks and wet rooms. Some jobs are a whole room, others just the shower. Either way, tiled areas in Tranent are handled the same careful way. We work on wet rooms, shower walls and tiled floors, and people most often call us about crumbling grout between the tiles and old grout in a dated colour.

In and around a place like Tranent, homes range from older stone-built properties to newer houses. Where a building moves, cracked grout and split sealant are normally the first signs.

We guarantee the work for a year. If there’s a problem with our work within the year, let us know and we’ll sort it.

How to look after the new joints

To keep the joints looking good and working properly:

  • Check the corner silicone every few months
  • Open a window or run the fan to clear steam
  • Keep harsh bleach and acid cleaners off the grout
  • Stick to mild products for cleaning grout

A squeegee or cloth over the tiles after use stops soap and water sitting on the grout. Run the extractor fan or open a window so the grout dries between uses.

If grout in the shower is washing out, act soon. Every shower pushes more water into the gaps and it can end up in the wall or the ceiling below.

What happens on the day

There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us the job and we will take it from there. The work itself takes a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room. In smaller Scottish places, parking is usually less of an issue than access and distance. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints.

  1. We check the tiles for any that are hollow or loose.
  2. The old grout is removed to an even depth.
  3. We vacuum the joints so the new grout bonds.
  4. New grout is pressed into the joints and the tiles are cleaned.
  5. We finish with silicone in the moving joints.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know about stairs, lifts or work at height
  • For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in
  • Tell us if parking is tricky

Advice

Should I try it myself first?

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.

The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions.

How we quote for regrouting

Your quote is based on your job. We take into account:

  • How easy the joints are to reach
  • The number and length of the joints
  • Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
  • Which sealant suits the joint

Commercial jobs are quoted on the same basis as homes: the amount of work, how we reach it and what it needs, along with when we can work on site. Ask us for a quote and we’ll explain what it covers.

What we need to know

When you call or email, these details help:

  • Whether it’s a home or a business
  • Whether it has been sealed before
  • A few photos by email, if you can
  • Where the property is

We quote each job on its own, so start by telling us what you need. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the details and send pictures if you have them.

What happens if it’s left?

New grout smeared over the old doesn’t bond well. A thin skin on top tends to break off, taking any repair with it. Removing the old grout to an even depth lets the new grout key in properly. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.

Leaving a failed joint usually makes the job bigger, not smaller, as water and mould keep getting in. If you are not sure whether it needs doing, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you an honest view and a quote.

Common problems we fix in Tranent

Soap scum and limescale build up on grout and stick to it. In time the grout under it darkens and breaks down, and at that point, new grout is the better answer.

It’s worth asking for a quote if you see:

  • Shower grout that has worn away
  • Corners filled with grout instead of silicone
  • Dirty, worn grout on a tiled floor
  • Old grout in a dated colour

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Ross High School, washroom and kitchen sealant there needs the same care as at home, and schools and businesses are part of our work as well as homes.

What your quote should include

  • Whether the sealant suits the joint
  • Are they insured?
  • How hidden problems are handled
  • When the joint can take water or movement

Regrouting in Tranent: local notes

Tranent is within about 2 miles of the coast. Coastal homes, holiday lets and guest houses can see heavy bathroom use in busy months, and sealant and grout that work that hard wear out sooner. In Scotland, private landlords have to meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping fixtures and fittings in reasonable repair. Tired, leaking sealant is worth putting right before a new tenant moves in.

FAQs for Tranent

Do you work for landlords with property near Prestonpans station?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for, and several properties can go on one quote. You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the details for a clear quote.

Can you do regrouting in Tranent?

Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Tranent is part of that. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job.

How long does regrouting take?

As a guide, most jobs take a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room. Bigger jobs take longer, and we’ll say how long yours will take.

Is regrouting a chance to pick a new grout colour?

It can. With the old grout removed, the new colour fills the whole joint rather than sitting on top.

Where are you based?

We are based in Crawley, and we cover South East England, London and all of Scotland.

Will there be a smell?

Sometimes, a little. Any smell clears as the sealant cures.

Will the sealant be renewed as well as the grout?

Normally we do both. Grout and sealant do different jobs, so we renew both and include it in your quote.

Which products do you use?

Each joint gets the product that suits it. Movement, water and weather all affect the choice.

Different surfaces, different methods

Bathroom floors

Cracked floor grout can point to movement underneath. We look for loose tiles first.

Kitchen splashbacks

Kitchen grout collects grease and food splashes. Stained grout is best replaced.
