Regrouting in Tobermory, done properly
We work across Tobermory, regrouting bathrooms, showers and kitchens. The old grout is raked out, the joints cleaned and new grout laid, finished with new silicone at the edges. We work on kitchen splashbacks, shower walls and tiled floors, and the jobs we see most are grout that stays dark however much it’s cleaned and splashback grout that has darkened.
Across smaller places in Scotland, homes range from stone and harled cottages to newer houses. Older buildings can move a little, and that shows first in cracked grout and split sealant.
All our work is covered by our one-year guarantee.

Keeping the joints in good condition
Joint life depends on how it’s used and looked after. We suggest:
- Avoid neat bleach and strong acid descalers on grout
- Skip wire brushes and scourers
- Run the extractor fan during and after a shower
- Give the walls a quick rinse after use
Clean the grout with a mild bathroom cleaner and a soft brush. Keep harsh bleach and acid limescale removers away from it because they wear grout away.
If grout in the shower is washing out, act soon. Every shower pushes more water into the gaps, and that water can reach the wall or the floor below.
The process
On the day, there’s very little for you to do. Show us the job and we’ll take it from there. The job generally takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area, including the tidy-up. Somewhere like Tobermory may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.
- Every tile area is checked for hollow or loose tiles first.
- The old grout is removed to an even depth.
- We vacuum the joints so the new grout bonds.
- We regrout the joints and clean the tile faces.
- Silicone goes into the corners and along the edges.
Before we arrive
- Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive
- Tell us about any water getting in
- Keep pets and children clear of the area while we work

Why act early in Tobermory
Regrouting will not help where tiles have come away. We point that out first so you know what’s involved. On sound tiles, regrouting avoids the upheaval of a retile. In a place like Tobermory, small leaks are easy to put off, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.
Some things make a job bigger or smaller: the old material and how easily it comes out, any mould to treat, and whether we need extra access for height. Your quote takes all of that into account.

Signs you need regrouting in Tobermory
Soap scum and limescale build up on grout that is hard to shift. In time the grout under it darkens and breaks down, and at that point, new grout is the better answer.
Keep an eye out for any of the following:
- Grout stained black or orange that won’t clean
- Good tiles let down by tired grout
- Crumbling grout between the tiles
- Shower grout that has worn away
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Tobermory High School, its toilets, changing areas and kitchens need their sealant renewed like any other building’s.
What your quote should include
- What guarantee comes with the work
- Whether the sealant suits the joint
- Whether VAT is included
- What insurance they hold

Bathrooms and kitchens in Tobermory
Tobermory is close to the coast. Coastal homes, holiday lets and guest houses can see heavy bathroom use in busy months, and sealant and grout that work that hard wear out sooner. Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that does not dry out.
If you live in an older home near Parish Church, bathrooms in older houses have often been refitted more than once, with sealant laid over sealant.

Your questions about regrouting in Tobermory
Is there a guarantee on regrouting in Tobermory?
Every job comes with our 12-month guarantee, wherever it is. We are also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.
Do you cover Tobermory for regrouting?
Yes, Tobermory is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job, and we’ll send you a clear quote.
Can tenants book the work?
Yes. Ask your landlord first, and we can send them the quote if that helps.
Is regrouting a chance to pick a new grout colour?
Yes. Many clients do. Darker grout can hide marks, while lighter grout brightens a room.
Is it possible to regrout only the shower area?
Yes. Many jobs are just the shower walls, or just the joints that have failed.
Will there be a smell?
It depends on the product. Some smell for a while, some hardly at all, and any smell fades as they cure.
Do you work for hotels and businesses?
Yes. Commercial and hotel work is a large part of what we do. Working times can be discussed when we quote.
Will regrouting fix loose tiles?
New grout can’t hold loose tiles in place. We flag any loose or hollow tiles before starting, so you can decide what to do.
DIY versus a professional finish
A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, such as a straightforward joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.
The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is, then guaranteed for a year.
