Trusted regrouting in Sandwick

Regrouting in Sandwick, done properly

When grout stays dark however much you clean it, the stain is often in the grout itself. Replacing it is the lasting answer, and it’s a chance to change the colour too. We work on kitchen splashbacks, bathroom floors and bathroom wall tiles, and people most often call us about a grout colour that no longer suits the room and grout in corners that has cracked.

Bathrooms in smaller places like Sandwick work just as hard as those in the cities. Limescale is less of a problem with Scotland’s generally soft water, but mould still takes hold in damp sealant and grout.

A one-year guarantee comes as standard, so you are covered after we’ve gone.

How we quote for regrouting

Every job gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • Working hours on commercial sites
  • Any mould that needs treating
  • The number and length of the joints
  • Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out

A few things move the cost up or down: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, any mould to treat, and whether we need extra access for height. We take all of that into account in your quote.

What to tell us for a quote

Photos by email are helpful but not essential. Please mention:

  • If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
  • Access, such as stairs, a lift or height
  • The problem you’ve noticed
  • Whether it has been sealed before

It all starts with a short chat. Tell us what’s wrong, where it is and how much there is, and we’ll explain how we’d tackle it. When it suits you, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Keeping the joints in good condition

To keep the joints looking good and working properly:

  • Use a soft brush rather than a wire one
  • Rinse the tiles after showering
  • Don’t use strong acidic cleaners on grout
  • Stick to mild products for cleaning grout

Clean the grout with a mild bathroom cleaner and a soft brush. Avoid neat bleach and strong acid descalers because they wear grout away.

Stains that won’t clean are a sign the grout is breaking down. At this point it’s a simple regrout, before the joints open up.

When something else is needed

Before booking, it’s worth knowing the limits too:

  • Leaks from pipes, valves or wastes (a plumber’s job)
  • Cracked or broken tiles
  • Loose tiles, which need refixing first

If you’re not sure, just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you a straight answer.

Sandwick homes and their sealant

Sandwick is close to the coast. Coastal homes, holiday lets and guest houses can see heavy bathroom use in busy months, and sealant and grout that work that hard wear out sooner. Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black.

In and around Sandwick, as anywhere, good regrouting starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Your questions about regrouting in Sandwick

Do you take on hotel work around Sandwick?

Yes, hospitality work, including hotels, is part of what we do. Work can be planned room by room, and out-of-hours working can be arranged.

Will you come out to Sandwick?

Yes. Sandwick is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across all of Scotland, including the islands, where work is planned around ferry crossings. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Are you ARBOMaster approved?

Yes. We are an ARBOMaster approved applicator, which is run for the Arbo sealant brand.

Can you regrout just the shower?

Yes. We’ll look at the rest of the room too and let you know if more needs doing.

Where is Mr Mastic based?

We’re based in Crawley, and we cover South East England, London and all of Scotland.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Where the job is, what the problem is and roughly how big it is. If you can, email a few pictures.

Do you take out the old sealant first?

Yes. All of the old material is cut out and the joint cleaned before resealing.

Can new sealant go over the old?

No, it won’t last. It can look neat for a few weeks, but the new bead soon lifts. The old sealant has to come out completely.

What we do, step by step

We bring everything the job needs with us. Once we have agreed what’s being done, the area is protected and the work begins. Most jobs take a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room. Outdoor work around Sandwick depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.

  1. We check the tiles for any that are hollow or loose.
  2. The old grout is removed to an even depth.
  3. The joints are vacuumed clean.
  4. New grout is pressed into the joints and the tiles are cleaned.
  5. Silicone goes into the corners and along the edges.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before
  • Let us know if you’ve seen damp or leaks
  • Keep children and pets away from the work area

Common problems we fix in Sandwick

Soap scum and limescale build up on grout that’s hard to shift. The grout beneath can stain and weaken, and at that point, new grout is the better answer.

People normally contact us when they notice something like this:

  • Corners filled with grout instead of silicone
  • Crumbling grout between the tiles
  • Shower grout that has worn away
  • Splashback grout that has darkened

In the older streets around Stornoway High Church, older homes can move a little, which is hard on rigid grout and tired sealant.
