Common problems we fix in Bràigh na h-Aoidhe

  • Grout that stays dark however much it’s cleaned

In and around Bràigh na h-Aoidhe, as anywhere, good regrouting starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Regrouting in Bràigh na h-Aoidhe

Grout is the filler between your tiles, while sealant goes where tiles meet a bath, tray or worktop. Once grout starts to crack or wash away, water can get in behind the tiles. We rake it out and replace it and renew the silicone at the edges. If you have old grout in a dated colour and good tiles let down by tired grout, we can help.

A bathroom in a place like Bràigh na h-Aoidhe gets the same daily wear as one in a city flat. Limescale is less of a problem with Scotland’s generally soft water, but mould still takes hold in damp sealant and grout.

The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If there’s a problem with our work within the year, let us know and we’ll sort it.

DIY versus a professional finish

If you’ve already had a go yourself, that is fine. We cut it out and start again.

What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is, then guaranteed for a year.

How it works

Good joint work is mostly preparation, so that is where we spend the time. Every joint is cleaned and dried before new material goes in. All told, the work takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room. In smaller Scottish places, parking is normally less of an issue than access and distance. Tell us how to find the property and how to reach the work, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. We check the tiles for any that are hollow or loose.
  2. We rake out the grout evenly, protecting the tile edges.
  3. The joints are vacuumed clean.
  4. New grout is pressed into the joints and the tiles are cleaned.
  5. We finish with silicone in the moving joints.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know about parking restrictions
  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints

Keeping the joints in good condition

Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Look at the sealant in the corners now and then
  • Get any tile that moves checked promptly
  • Use a squeegee on the tiles after showering
  • Avoid neat bleach and strong acid descalers on grout

Wipe the tiles down after a shower stops soap and water sitting on the grout. Ventilate the room well so the grout dries between uses.

Small problems with grout are quick to put right. Left for a few years, they can become a leak, so get it looked at when you notice it.

Why deal with it now?

Regrouting won’t help where tiles have come away. We point that out first, so you can decide what to do. On sound tiles, regrouting avoids the upheaval of a retile. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

No two jobs are quite the same, so each one gets its own quote. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all make a difference.
