Regrouting in Stornoway

Problem with your tiled areas in Stornoway? We remove the old material, prepare the joints and seal them properly.

  • Grout washed out of a shower
  • Old grout in a dated colour
  • Dirty, worn grout on a tiled floor

Need regrouting in Stornoway?

What happens if it’s left?

Cleaning products may brighten grout for a time, but mould that has got into grout normally comes back. Replacing the grout and resealing the edges is a lasting fix. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.

Leaving a failed joint normally makes the job bigger, not smaller, because water and mould keep working on it. If you’re not sure whether it needs doing, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

Regrouting in Stornoway, done properly

Before work begins, the tiles are checked. If any tiles are loose or sound hollow, we tell you, since new grout cannot fix a problem underneath. With sound tiles, regrouting is a tidy, lasting improvement. We work on tiled floors, shower walls and bathroom wall tiles, and common reasons people get in touch are stained grout that cleaning won’t shift and good tiles let down by tired grout.

Bathrooms in smaller places like Stornoway work just as hard as those in the cities. Generally soft Scottish water means less limescale, but steam still lets mould into sealant and grout.

Whatever the size of the job, it’s backed by our 12-month guarantee in Stornoway and across Na h-Eileanan Siar.

Stornoway: your questions answered

Is Stornoway within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, islands included, from towns to the smallest places. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Is Stornoway in your area for regrouting?

Yes, Stornoway is within the area we cover. We work across all of Scotland. Just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job.

Can you quote for more than one area?

Yes, we can. More than one area can be quoted together.

Will there be a smell?

It depends on the product. Some smell for a while, some hardly at all.

Are you fully insured?

Yes, we are fully insured for every job we do.

How long does regrouting take?

As a guide, most jobs take a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room. Bigger jobs take longer, and we’ll say how long yours will take.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Only a few details: the address or postcode, what’s wrong and any access issues. Then send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Should I try DIY first?

For a simple, easy-to-reach joint, a careful DIYer can do a reasonable job. Most DIY failures come from sealing over old material, wet joints or too much sealant.

How to look after the new joints

A little care helps the new joints last. Our advice:

  • Check the corner silicone every few months
  • Rinse soap off the tiles after each shower
  • Use a soft brush rather than a wire one
  • Avoid neat bleach and strong acid descalers on grout

Use a gentle cleaner on the grout with a soft brush. Avoid neat bleach and strong acid descalers because they wear grout away.

Small problems with grout are quick to put right. Left for a few years, they can become a leak so it’s worth dealing with as soon as you spot it.

What we cannot put right

To be straight with you, there are a few things sealant won’t fix:

  • Water coming from plumbing rather than grout
  • Cracked or broken tiles
  • A floor or wall that keeps moving

If you are not sure, just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.

What we seal

  • Kitchen splashbacks
  • Wet rooms
  • Tiled floors
  • Bathroom wall tiles
  • Bathroom floors
  • Shower walls

What regrouting looks like in Stornoway

Stornoway is within about 1 mile of the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, and sealant and grout that work that hard wear out sooner. Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black.

Whether the job is in Stornoway itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish. Around Stornoway, as everywhere, regrouting is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Different surfaces, different methods

Corners and edges

We reseal edges at the same time as regrouting, so the whole area is finished together.

Shower walls

Showers put more water on grout than anywhere else. We replace it, and reseal the corners.

DIY sealant or a professional job?

What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions, and the work is guaranteed for a year.

If you’re set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

How we quote for regrouting

Every job gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • The product the joint needs
  • The amount of work
  • Whether there’s mould to deal with
  • Access and height

Homes and businesses are quoted the same way: how much there is to do, how we reach it and what it needs, along with when we can work on site. Call for a quick quote and we’ll explain what it covers.

Helping us quote

To help us quote quickly, let us know:

  • Whether it’s a home or a business
  • Photos by email, if that’s easy
  • What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work

Call for a quick quote, or email us if that’s easier. Tell us about the joints that need doing and we’ll explain what’s involved and send you a clear quote.

What we do, step by step

Good joint work is mostly preparation, and we don’t rush it. Every joint is cleaned and dried before new material goes in. In total, it usually takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room. Outdoor work around Stornoway depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Work indoors isn’t affected.

  1. First, we check for loose or hollow tiles and point out any we find.
  2. We rake out the old grout to an even depth, taking care of the tile edges.
  3. The joints are vacuumed and cleaned.
  4. We fill the joints with new grout, then clean the tiles.
  5. The corners and edges get new silicone, because grout there would crack.
