Outside joints around The Barony
The Barony is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That’s hard on gutter, fascia and roofline joints, especially on the side facing the sea. Work on the islands has to be planned around ferry crossings and the weather, so the more notice, the better.
For an older house near a landmark such as St Magnus' Church, an extension built onto an older house moves differently, and the joint between them takes the strain. Around The Barony, as everywhere, gutter sealing is only as good as the preparation behind it.
The Barony is about 16 miles north-west of Kirkwall, in the Orkney Islands. Wherever you are in the KW17 postcode area, we can carry out gutter sealing at your property. The Barony is one of 51 towns and villages in the Orkney Islands where we work for gutter sealing.

Gutter sealing in The Barony
Across The Barony, we reseal gutter joints, end caps and roofline trims. Low-level work is straightforward and if it’s higher up, let us know and we’ll confirm what access is needed. Typical jobs include stop ends leaking at the end of a run and drips from gutter joints and end caps, on soffit joints, gutter joints and garage door frames.
Outside joints can only be sealed when they’re dry, so work in The Barony depends on the weather. Let us know about access to every wall and roofline.
We guarantee the work for a year. If something isn’t right with it in that time, tell us and we’ll put it right.

Your questions about gutter sealing in The Barony
Is gutter sealing in a coastal place like The Barony any different?
Coastal weather is harder on outside sealant: there’s more wind-driven rain and, closer to the shore, salt in the air. Choosing the right sealant for the frame and wall, laid at the right depth, helps it last.
Do you cover smaller places like The Barony?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, including the islands, where work is planned around ferry crossings. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Do you work for hotels and businesses?
Yes. Larger jobs can be planned room by room or area by area.
Do you seal gaps in fascias and soffits?
Yes. Open joints along uPVC fascias and soffits can be sealed in a colour to suit.
Can a leaking gutter joint be sealed?
In many cases, yes. A clean, dry joint resealed with gutter sealant generally stops the drip. If the section is split or warped, it needs replacing.
Where are you based?
Our base is in Crawley, and we work across South East England, London and Scotland.
Is the work guaranteed?
Every job comes with our 12-month guarantee, and we’re fully insured.
Can I do it myself?
Sometimes. The key is preparation: remove all the old material and work on a clean, dry joint. We can always put it right if it fails.
How to look after the new joints
To keep the joints looking good and working properly:
- Do not leave a sagging gutter
- Watch for drips in a downpour
- Look for streaks or damp on the wall below gutters
- Glance at the soffit joints now and then
Keep the gutters clear of leaves and moss, so water drains away past the joints. Water left in a gutter tests every joint.
Leaking gutter joints get worse over time. Water keeps hitting the same part of the wall and that can cause damp inside.
How the job changes by surface
Roofline trims
Trims along the roofline are often finished with sealant. When it splits, water can get behind.
Soffit joints
Soffit board joints can separate over time. They’re sealed to tidy the line.
What else we do in The Barony
How it works
A visit follows a simple pattern: we look at the joints together, protect the area around them, do the work and tidy away. It normally takes a few hours, depending on the number of joints and the access. Outside jobs in The Barony need a dry day, because sealant won’t bond to a wet joint, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.
- First we agree which joints need sealing.
- Each joint is cleaned and any old sealant removed.
- The joints are dried.
- The sealant is applied and finished.
- We check our work before we leave.
Before we arrive
- Tell us about any water getting in
- Clear items away from the joints we’re working on
- Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive

Advice
Why act early in The Barony
New gutters cost far more than a few resealed joints. Where the gutter is in good order and only a joint leaks, resealing is the sensible fix. If it has failed, we’ll tell you. In a place like The Barony, small leaks are easy to put off, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.
A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting, as water and mould keep getting in. If you’re unsure, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.
Why us?

What affects the cost of gutter sealing
For a quick quote, just ask. What matters most is:
- Any working-time requirements on site
- Whether the work is at height
- The product the joint needs
- Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
What you pay reflects the work, not a rough estimate. That is why we ask about the job first and agree the price before starting.
Asking for a quote
To make quoting easier, please include:
- Photos by email, if that is easy
- Roughly how big the job is
- If someone has resealed it before
- What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking
Asking for a quote is easy: tell us what needs doing and where and its rough size. Photos by email help us understand the job, and we’ll come back to you with a quote.
Honest limits
In fairness, there are a few things sealant will not fix:
- Sagging gutters or broken brackets
- Rotten or damaged fascia boards
- Guttering that needs replacing
Not sure which it is? You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly before you book.

Should I try it myself first?
Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.
Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.
