Gutter sealing near Rhu

About our gutter sealing in Rhu

A leaking gutter joint marks the wall and wets the ground underneath. Resealing the joint is often all it needs, as long as the gutter is sound. We work on garage door frames, gutter joints and roofline trims, and common reasons people get in touch are rain getting in around a garage door and trim joints where the sealant has failed.

External sealant needs dry surfaces, so outdoor work around Rhu is planned around the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Let us know about access to every wall and roofline.

A one-year guarantee comes as standard.

Rhu buildings and the weather

Rhu is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on gutter, fascia and roofline joints, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Under the Repairing Standard, private landlords in Scotland have to keep homes wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Lomond School, larger buildings have long runs of movement joint that eventually need resealing. Homes close to Rhu Parish Church include some older properties, and older walls, gutters and the joints where extensions meet them need a flexible sealant. How the job changes by surface

uPVC fascias

Joints between fascia boards can open over time. We seal them neatly in a suitable colour.

Roofline trims

Trims along the roofline are often finished with sealant. When it splits, water can get behind.

The process

The work is kept neat and contained to the area we are working on, so you can carry on as normal. Expect the work to take anything from an hour or two to a few hours, and we explain the cure time before we leave. Somewhere like Rhu may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. We look at the gutters, fascias and trims and agree the joints to seal.
  2. Each joint is cleaned and any old sealant removed.
  3. The joints are dried.
  4. We apply exterior or gutter sealant and finish it neatly.
  5. We check our work before we leave.

Preparing for the visit

  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
  • Mention any tricky access
  • Clear items away from the joints we are working on

Advice

DIY sealant or a professional job?

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

For landlords and businesses

Water getting past a failed joint can damage the building, which is a bigger problem in a rented property. Resealing at the right time is simple maintenance that we can handle for you.

For anyone letting property in or around Rhu, jobs at different addresses can be quoted together. Send us the addresses and the work at each.

What happens if it’s left?

A new garage door is not needed for a leaking frame. Sealing the frame generally stops it, if the frame itself is sound. In a place like Rhu, small leaks are easy to put off, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.

Combining jobs into one visit generally makes better use of the time than several visits. We’ll give you a clear quote for the lot.

Aftercare tips

Aftercare is simple:

  • Look along the fascias for open joints
  • Rest ladders on the wall, not the gutter
  • Clean out the gutters once or twice a year
  • Get a dropping gutter looked at quickly

Have a look at the gutter during a downpour now and then. It’s the easiest time to see a leak.

Split sealant on fascias and trims lets water in behind. Sealing it early keeps the boards behind dry and the wall below.
