What sealant work can’t fix

We’d rather tell you now than do work that will not last, so these are the limits:

  • Blocked downpipes
  • Guttering that needs replacing
  • Fascias that need replacing

Not sure which it is? You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly.

How we handle gutter sealing in Oldmeldrum

Many dripping gutters are just a failed joint or end cap. We clean out the joint, dry it and reseal it with a sealant made for guttering. If the gutter itself has failed, we say so. If you have streaks down the brickwork from a leaking joint and trim joints where the sealant has failed, we can put it right, whatever the surface.

Stone walls need a stone-friendly sealant, as acetoxy products can attack some stone. Newer houses need their movement joints and roofline trims kept sound.

Every job comes with a 12-month guarantee, wherever you are in Aberdeenshire.

Common problems we fix in Oldmeldrum

When a gutter sags, its joints open. Resealing a sagging joint will not last, so the gutter needs refixing first.

The problems people usually mention when they call include:

  • Damp on an inside wall under a dripping gutter
  • Rain getting in around a garage door
  • Dripping gutter ends
  • Fascia boards with gaps between them

If you look after a building such as Meldrum Academy, larger buildings have long runs of movement joint that eventually need resealing.

Surface by surface

Garage door frames

Resealing a garage door frame keeps rain and draughts out.

Roofline trims

Trims along the roofline are often finished with sealant. When it splits, water can get behind.

Aftercare tips

Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Check fascia and soffit joints for gaps
  • Make sure downpipes aren’t blocked
  • Rest ladders on the wall, not the gutter
  • Keep an eye out for wet patches below a joint

Make sure downpipes are not blocked so the gutter can drain. Blockages push water back along the gutter.

If an end cap is dripping, deal with it before winter. A winter of drips can lead to damp patches.

What happens on the day

Our applicators work methodically: protect, prepare, seal, tidy. For most jobs that takes a few hours, depending on the number of joints and the access, and the area is left clean. In smaller Scottish places, parking is normally less of an issue than access and distance. Tell us how to find the property and how to reach the work.

  1. We look at the gutters, fascias and trims and agree the joints to seal.
  2. We clean out each joint.
  3. We make sure everything is dry.
  4. We apply exterior or gutter sealant and finish it neatly.
  5. We check our work before we leave.

How to prepare

  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
  • Tell us if parking is tricky
  • Clear items away from the joints we are working on

Advice

DIY versus a professional finish

Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

Oldmeldrum: your questions answered

Is Oldmeldrum in your area for gutter sealing?

Yes, Oldmeldrum is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us what needs doing.

I let a flat near Inverurie station. Can you help?

Yes, we work for landlords and letting agents. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us about the property, and we will give you a clear quote.

Is it messy?

No. We protect the surfaces around the joints, and we clear up the old sealant and our materials before we leave.

Do you replace gutters or fascias?

That is not something we do. We seal joints; replacing gutters and fascias needs a gutter or roofline installer.

Can you seal over the old sealant?

No. New silicone won’t bond to old silicone, and anything trapped underneath, including mould and water, stays there. We remove it all first.

Where do you work from?

Mr Mastic is based in Crawley. Our applicators cover Oldmeldrum.

What information do you need?

Just the basics: the address or postcode, what’s wrong and any access issues. Then drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

How long does the job take?

A typical job takes an hour or two for a few joints, longer for a full run. Your quote will say how long we expect yours to take.

Outside joints around Oldmeldrum

Private landlords in Scotland must meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping a home wind and watertight, and sound outside sealant is part of that. Plenty of Scottish homes have harled walls, and where harling meets frames, pipes and other materials, the joint needs a flexible sealant that grips a rough surface.
