About our bathroom resealing in Oldmeldrum

A fresh bead of silicone changes how a bathroom looks more than most people expect. Mouldy silicone makes even a new bathroom look neglected, and a neat new joint puts that right in a short visit. Just as important, it closes the gaps water would otherwise get through. We work on baths, basins & vanity units and shower trays & enclosures, and people most often call us about mouldy sealant that has gone black and new sealant laid over old sealant that is now lifting.

Being further from a city does not change the work: old material out, joints cleaned and dried, and a fresh, even finish. The journey and access are simply planned in advance.

The work is covered for a year after we finish. If there’s a problem with it, please drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Oldmeldrum homes and their sealant

Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that does not dry out. Oldmeldrum has hotels and guest accommodation nearby. As well as homes, we work in hotel bathrooms, where resealing and regrouting can be done room by room.

Rented homes near Inverurie station change hands often, and a reseal between tenants is a quick way to make the bathroom and kitchen look cared for. Managing a site like Meldrum Academy? Then we reseal washrooms and kitchens in schools and businesses as well as homes.

Oldmeldrum is about 4 miles north-east of Inverurie, in Aberdeenshire. Across the AB51 area, our applicators can take on bathroom resealing. Our area takes in 161 places across Aberdeenshire, large and small. For nearby work, see our Aberdeen page (15 miles or so).

We cover every part of AB51 for bathroom resealing. Streets in the area include Station Road, Cowgate and Lower Cowgate, and we cover them all. Being close to the A920 and A947, Oldmeldrum is simple for us to get to for bathroom resealing. We also cover the places around Oldmeldrum: Hattoncrook (3 miles south-east), Inverurie (4 miles south-west), Garioch (4 miles south-west), Daviot (4 miles west) and Tarves (4 miles north-east). Within a short drive, we also cover Westhill (13 miles south), Ellon (9 miles east), Turriff (15 miles north), Kemnay (8 miles south-west), Kintore (7 miles south) and Insch (11 miles west). For island and remote addresses, the job takes a little more planning.

When something else is needed

It helps to know what we cannot do too:

  • Movement from a bath with loose feet or no proper support
  • A cracked shower tray or bath (that needs repair or replacement)
  • Leaks from a shower valve, waste or pipework (a plumber’s job)

If you are not sure, just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you a straight answer.

Surfaces we seal

  • Basins & vanity units
  • Baths
  • Kitchen worktops & upstands
  • Sinks & splashbacks
  • Shower trays & enclosures
  • Wet rooms

What happens if it’s left?

A clean new bead makes a room look cared for, which helps when a home is being let or put on the market. A smeared, uneven DIY bead does the opposite. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.

Rather than a set price list, we price the job in front of us: the amount of work, the old material and the access. The price is agreed before we begin.

FAQs for Oldmeldrum

Will you come out to Oldmeldrum?

Yes. Oldmeldrum is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across all of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Do you work for landlords with property near Inverurie station?

Yes, we work for landlords and letting agents. You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the address and a few details, and we will give you a fixed price before any work starts.

Do you take out the old sealant first?

Yes, always, and completely. New silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so any old material comes out before anything new goes in.

Do the sealants smell?

Sometimes, a little. Any smell clears as the sealant cures, and ventilation helps.

Where are you based?

We work from Crawley. We cover Oldmeldrum and the rest of Aberdeenshire.

Do you guarantee your resealing?

Yes. Every job carries our 12-month guarantee, and we are fully insured.

Is white the only colour available?

There’s a choice: clear, white and colours chosen to suit the room. We’ll talk it through when we quote.

What do you put in the joint?

The product depends on the job: sanitary silicone where it gets wet, and sealants suited to movement or weather elsewhere. Brands we use include Arbo and Everbuild.

Can I do it myself?

Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is, then guaranteed for a year.

Landlords, agents and businesses in Oldmeldrum

Mouldy or split sealant often shows up at the end of a tenancy, and it’s quick to put right between tenancies. We can quote for more than one property at once.

In hotels, rooms out of use cost money, so we plan the work room by room around your bookings where we can. Hotel work is part of what we do, alongside homes and businesses.

The process

On the day, we start by going over the job with you, so there are no surprises. We protect the surfaces around the joints before we start. Most jobs take around two hours for one bath or shower, longer for a whole bathroom. In smaller Scottish places, parking is usually less of an issue than access and distance. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. First, each joint is checked for movement and signs of water.
  2. The old silicone is cut out completely, along with the film it leaves on the tiles.
  3. The joint is cleaned, degreased and treated for mould.
  4. When the joint is dry, and a bath has been filled with water, the new silicone goes on.
  5. We tool the bead to a neat finish and give you the cure time, usually around 24 hours.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us about any water getting in
  • Tell us if parking is tricky
  • Move anything stored near the joints

Looking after it afterwards

Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Don’t leave water standing on kitchen joints
  • Do not let bottles sit on the bead
  • Check the joints every few months for splits or lifting
  • Avoid abrasive pads on the sealant

Mould needs damp, so keep the room aired. Run the extractor fan during and after a shower, so the silicone gets a chance to dry.

Watch for the early signs: lifting ends, gaps, dark shadows under the bead or a stain downstairs. Any of these means the joint needs attention.

Different surfaces, different methods

Shower trays & enclosures

If a tray moves underfoot, new silicone will not last. We check for movement before we reseal, and if the tray needs refixing, we will say so.

Baths

The long joint down the side of a bath is where most leaks start, especially under a shower. It gets one smooth bead of anti-fungal silicone.
