Glazing silicone in Pierowall

About our glazing silicone in Pierowall

Glass and frames expand and contract differently, and the silicone between them takes the strain. Once it splits or comes away, water finds a way through. We replace it with a glazing silicone that suits the glass and frame. If you have silicone pulling away from the glass and cracked silicone between glass panels, we can help, whatever the surface.

Mastic can only go onto a dry joint, so outside work in Pierowall depends on the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Tell us about access to all the windows and doors, upstairs included.

The work is covered for a year after we finish. If there’s a problem with it, please email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Surface by surface

Conservatory frames

Leaks often start where the frame meets the wall. We remove the failed sealant and renew it.

Glass-to-glass joints

You see these joints clearly, so a straight, even finish matters.

Can I do it myself?

If you’re set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.

What we can’t put right

New sealant can’t fix everything, and we’ll tell you before any work starts. It will not solve:

  • Structural problems with a conservatory roof
  • Glass that needs replacing
  • Rotten or badly damaged frames

If you’re not sure, just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Glass-to-frame joints
  • Glass balustrade bases
  • Glass-to-glass joints
  • Conservatory frames
  • Rooflights
  • Shower screens

The process

A visit follows a simple pattern: we check the joints, mask and protect the surrounding surfaces, carry out the job and tidy away. Most jobs take anything from an hour or two to most of a day, depending on the size of the job. Outside jobs in Pierowall need a dry day, because sealant will not bond to a wet joint, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.

  1. We find where water is getting in and check whether it’s a sealant joint.
  2. We cut out the failed silicone, taking care of the glass and frame.
  3. Surfaces are cleaned with a solvent suited to glass and the frame.
  4. We apply a neutral-cure glazing silicone and tool it smooth.
  5. We look over every joint and, where we can, test it with water.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
  • Tell us about access, such as stairs, a lift or high-level joints
  • Mention any leaks or damp you’ve noticed

Is Pierowall within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, islands included, from towns to the smallest places. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Is Pierowall in your area for glazing silicone?

Yes, Pierowall is within the area we cover. We work across all of Scotland. Just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job, and we will send you a clear quote.

How much does glazing silicone cost in Pierowall?

Every job is different, so each one gets its own quote. For a quick quote, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us what needs doing and where.

Will there be a smell?

There can be a smell while the sealant cures, which fades as it sets. Ventilation helps.

Where do you work from?

We’re a Crawley-based firm. Our area covers South East England, London and Scotland.

Is it worth trying it myself?

Sometimes. The key is preparation: remove all the old material and work on a clean, dry joint. If it does not work out, we can redo it.

Can you fix a leaking conservatory?

That depends where the water is getting in. Failed glazing and frame joints can be resealed but roof and panel problems need another trade.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes. We work for householders, landlords, letting agents, businesses and hotels.

Why act early in Pierowall

Fixing a leaking screen early protects what’s underneath. A small leak can reach the floor below before it shows. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.

What you pay reflects the work, not a rough estimate. That is why we ask a few questions first and agree the price before starting.

Windows and doors in Pierowall

Pierowall is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That’s hard on glazing joints and frame seals, especially on the side facing the sea. Island weather, with its wind and salt spray, is tough on glazing joints and frame seals.

Homes close to Baptist Church include some older properties, and the windows may be timber, sash or later replacements, and each needs the right sealant against the wall.

What we are called out for in Pierowall

Sunlight breaks sealant down, especially on conservatory roofs. It goes brittle, cracks and stops sticking to the glass and frame.

These are the problems we’re asked about most:

  • Glass-to-glass joints that have split
  • Drips on the inside of a conservatory window
  • Glazing silicone that has cracked or come away
  • Leaking glazing joints on a rooflight

In and around Pierowall, as anywhere, good glazing silicone starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.
