What we are called out for in Stoer

Sealant applied too thin, without the backing its detail needs, or onto dust will not perform as it was tested. We see plenty of fire stopping that was hurried, especially where it was squeezed in at the end of a project.

If you can see any of these, it’s time to have the joints looked at:

  • New service routes left unsealed after building work
  • Ordinary sealant used where a fire-rated product was needed
  • Gaps around pipes and cables through fire-resisting walls
  • Old fire sealant that has split or come away

Whether the job is in Stoer itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.

What your quote should include

  • Whether all the old sealant comes out first
  • Who turns up on the day
  • Which sealant they’ll use, and why
  • What guarantee comes with the work

Stoer questions

Can you do fire rated sealant in Stoer?

Yes. We work across all of Scotland, and Stoer is part of that. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job, and we’ll give you a clear quote.

Are the rules for fire-rated sealant different in Scotland?

Building work in Scotland comes under the Building (Scotland) Regulations and their technical handbooks. Whatever the rules, fire-rated sealant has to be installed to the manufacturer’s tested details, and that’s how we fit it. We don’t certify buildings or carry out fire risk assessments, so your fire risk assessor or building control will advise on what’s needed.

Do you have insurance?

Yes, we are fully insured for domestic and commercial work.

Is it messy?

Not at all. The area is protected while we work and cleaned up afterwards.

Can I do it myself?

For a simple, easy-to-reach joint, a careful DIYer can do a reasonable job. Most DIY failures come from sealing over old material, wet joints or too much sealant.

Can I choose the sealant colour?

Usually, yes. Sealants come in white, clear, grey and other colours for many products, and we’ll agree it with you first.

What fire rating will the seal have?

That is not something we state or certify. The requirement comes from your assessor, designer or building control, and we apply a product tested for it.

What’s the difference between intumescent and fire-rated sealant?

Fire-rated is the broad term for sealants tested for fire stopping. Intumescent ones swell in heat, and they’re one of the options. The specification and the tested detail decide which is used.

The process

All our tools and materials come with us in the van. Once we’ve agreed what’s being done, we protect the area and start. It normally takes anything from a few hours to several days, depending on how many gaps there are. Outside jobs in Stoer need a dry day, because sealant will not bond to a wet joint, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Work indoors isn’t affected.

  1. First we work through your list or survey, measuring each gap and checking what it’s formed in.
  2. Old or unsuitable sealant is cut out and the gap cleaned.
  3. Where the tested detail needs backing or fill, we fit it.
  4. We apply the fire-rated or intumescent sealant to the specified depth and tool it.
  5. Finally, we list where we worked and what we used, for your records.

How to prepare

What affects the cost of fire rated sealant

We don’t publish a price list, because no two jobs are the same. The quote depends on:

  • The number of rooms or windows
  • The product the joint needs
  • Whether the work is at height
  • The old material and how stubborn it is

A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting, because water and mould keep working on it. If you’re unsure, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you an honest view and a quote.

Asking for a quote

When you contact us, it’s useful to know:

  • Whether it’s a home or a business
  • Pictures of the joints, sent by email
  • The rough size of the job
  • The problem you’ve noticed

Want a quote for fire rated sealant? Please email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us about the job. You will know what we plan to do, and what it will cost, before any work begins.

Commercial buildings in Stoer

If you run a hotel, guest house or holiday let in a coastal place like Stoer, busy months put washrooms and kitchens under pressure, so it’s worth checking the sealant before the busiest weeks. In Scotland, building work comes under the Building (Scotland) Regulations and their technical handbooks. We install fire-rated sealant to the product’s tested details, though we do not certify buildings or do fire risk assessments.

In and around Stoer, as anywhere, good fire rated sealant starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Should I try it myself first?

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

Aftercare tips

No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. Our tips:

  • Allow for resealing whenever new services are run
  • Check whether a sealant can be painted before decorating over it
  • Make resealing part of every contractor’s brief
  • Include hidden areas like risers in routine checks

Do not add foam, filler or ordinary sealant over a fire seal. If it needs repair, use the same type of product. We can tell you which product we used.

A gap left open in a fire-resisting wall or floor lets smoke spread in ways the building wasn’t designed for. Closing it is usually a straightforward job.

What we can’t put right

It helps to know what we can’t do too:

  • Openings too large for sealant, which need batts, boards or another system
  • Certifying a building or signing off its fire safety
  • Walls or floors that weren’t built to resist fire

If you’re not sure, just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Pipe & cable gaps
  • Linear gaps
  • Flats & HMOs
  • Door frames
  • Service penetrations
  • Plasterboard & masonry

Why it’s worth doing now in Stoer

If an assessor has flagged gaps, it makes sense to close them before the next review. Getting them done and written up means you can show the action was taken. Around Stoer, water from a failed joint in an older stone home can soak into timber and plaster.

We do not show prices on the website, because the cost depends so much on the job itself. For a quick quote, please send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll talk you through it.
