Regrouting in Stoer

If you’ve been scrubbing grout that won’t come clean, the discolouration has normally soaked into the grout. Replacing it is the lasting answer, and it’s a chance to change the colour too. If you have shower grout that has worn away and grout in corners that has cracked, we can put it right.

Across smaller places in Scotland, homes range from stone and harled cottages to newer houses. Older buildings can move a little, and that shows first in cracked grout and split sealant.

Big or small, it’s backed by our 12-month guarantee in Stoer and across Highland.

Looking after it afterwards

Good habits help new joints last longer. Our tips:

  • Open a window or run the fan to clear steam
  • Check the corner silicone every few months
  • Wipe water off the walls when you’re done
  • Skip wire brushes and scourers

Check the corner silicone now and then. It’s the part that moves, so it’s normally the first thing to need attention.

Cracked grout doesn’t stay cracked for long. Water gets behind the tiles, and they can begin to come away and early regrouting can avoid a much bigger job.

Do you need regrouting in Stoer?

A bathroom that stays damp keeps the grout wet, giving mould a place to grow. Black marks that come back after cleaning are often in the grout itself.

The problems people usually mention when they call include:

  • Old grout in a dated colour
  • Grout in corners that has cracked
  • Shower grout that has worn away
  • Grout stained black or orange that won’t clean

Around Stoer, as everywhere, regrouting is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Stoer questions

What guarantee comes with regrouting in Stoer?

All our work, in Stoer and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We are fully insured, and an ARBOMaster approved applicator.

Will you come out to Stoer?

Yes, we do. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

How long does regrouting take?

That depends on the amount of work, but most jobs take anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area. We’ll give you a better idea when we quote.

Do you work for letting agents?

Yes. We work for homeowners, landlords, letting agents, businesses and hotels.

Will there be a smell?

It depends on the product. Some products have a noticeable smell, others very little.

Which products do you use?

The product depends on the job: anti-fungal sanitary silicone in wet areas, and other sealants where joints move or face the weather. We use products from Arbo and Everbuild.

Could my grout be a different colour after regrouting?

Yes. Many clients do. A darker grout hides marks better, while lighter grout brightens a room.

Can new sealant go over the old?

No. Fresh sealant does not stick to old sealant, and it traps any mould or water underneath. It all has to come out first.

DIY versus a professional finish

Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, such as a straightforward joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.

A DIY attempt doesn’t rule out a professional job. We remove it and do the joint properly, so just mention it when you contact us.

When something else is needed

Some problems need a builder, plumber or other trade rather than us:

  • Tiles that are chipped or split
  • Tiles that have come away from the wall
  • A leaking wet room membrane

If in doubt, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think before you book.

What affects the cost of regrouting

The price is agreed before any work begins. It takes into account:

  • How much there is to do
  • Mould in or behind the old joints
  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
  • Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out

The cost reflects the work involved, not a rough estimate. That’s why we ask about the job first and send you a clear quote before work begins.

Helping us quote

Photos help, but a description is a good start. Try to tell us:

  • Where the property is
  • Any access issues, like height or stairs
  • What’s wrong with the joints now
  • The type of property

Quotes start with a quick conversation. Tell us what’s wrong, where it is and how much there is. Whenever you are ready, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

How the job changes by surface

Corners and edges

The joint between tiles and a bath, tray or worktop gets silicone. Grout there would crack.

Shower walls

Showers put more water on grout than anywhere else. We rake it out and regrout, and reseal the corners.

What happens on the day

There’s no need to move everything out before we come, just the space around the work. We protect the rest, and the job takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room for a typical job. Outside jobs in Stoer need a dry day, because sealant will not bond to a wet joint, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Work indoors is not affected.

  1. We check the tiles for any that are hollow or loose.
  2. The old grout is removed to an even depth.
  3. We vacuum the joints so the new grout bonds.
  4. New grout is pressed into the joints and the tiles are cleaned.
  5. We finish with silicone in the moving joints.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts
  • Mention any parking rules near the property
  • On commercial sites, let us know about site rules

Advice

What regrouting looks like in Stoer

Stoer is close to the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, and sealant and grout that work that hard wear out sooner. In Scotland, private landlords have to meet the Repairing Standard, which covers keeping fixtures and fittings in a reasonable state of repair. Failed sealant around a bath or shower is worth sorting between tenancies.

Whether the job is in Stoer itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.

Stoer is about 38 miles east of Stornoway, in Highland. Stoer gets the same service as everywhere we cover: old sealant removed completely, careful preparation and a one-year guarantee. Our Highland coverage runs to 253 places, Stoer among them.

Work in IV27 works the same way as everywhere else we cover. Nearby, we also carry out regrouting in Stor (1 mile north-east), Lochinver (5 miles south-east), An Druim Beag (6 miles north-east), Scourie More (12 miles north-east) and Scourie (12 miles north-east). Remote and island addresses need a little more planning, so tell us where you are when you ask for a quote.
