Need fire rated sealant in Alva?

Surface by surface

Service penetrations

Service penetrations are where new gaps often appear. We clean out what’s there and reseal to the right depth with backing where the detail needs it.

Plasterboard walls

In plasterboard walls, the condition of the board edge matters. Loose material is removed so the sealant has a firm edge.

Fire rated sealant in Alva

Where services or frames pass through a fire-resisting wall or floor, the gap around them needs a fire-rated seal. We apply intumescent and fire-rated sealants to the manufacturer’s tested details for each gap, with a record of the products and locations if you need one. If you have open holes round services passing through fire walls and old fire sealant that has split or come away, we can put it right.

Work in a place like Alva is planned ahead, journey included, so it can be fitted around bookings or opening times where possible.

A 12-month guarantee comes with the work, just as it does everywhere we cover.

  • Cracked or shrunken fire-rated sealant
  • Fire stopping disturbed by later work

How it works

We bring everything the job needs with us. After a quick look at the joints together, we protect the area and start. Most jobs take a few hours for a handful of gaps, and longer for a whole building. Outdoor work around Alva depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Work indoors isn’t affected.

  1. We go through the gaps on your list or survey and check each one’s size and substrate.
  2. Old or unsuitable sealant is cut out and the gap cleaned.
  3. Where the tested detail needs backing or fill, we fit it.
  4. Fire-rated or intumescent sealant is applied to the right depth and tooled.
  5. Finally, we list where we worked and what we used, for your records.

Advice

Looking after it afterwards

How long the joints last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Ask which product was used before you paint
  • Keep general-purpose foam and caulk away from fire-stopping gaps
  • Ask every contractor to reseal any fire stopping they disturb
  • Check risers, ceiling voids and cupboards during building checks

Follow the cure time we give you before decorating over the sealant. Some fire-rated sealants can be painted and some cannot, so ask us which we used.

An open gap is not only a fire issue: noise, draughts and even pests can come through too. Sealing them early helps on every front.

Questions from Alva

Do you cover smaller places like Alva?

Yes. Alva is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Do Scottish building rules affect fire-rated sealant work in Alva?

Building work in Scotland comes under the Building (Scotland) Regulations and their technical handbooks. Fire-rated sealant has to go in to the product’s tested details, and we follow them. We do not certify buildings or carry out fire risk assessments, so your fire risk assessor or building control will advise on what’s needed.

Is intumescent sealant the same as fire-rated sealant?

Fire-rated sealant covers any sealant tested for use in fire stopping. Intumescent types expand when heated, and they’re one option among several. We use whichever the specification and tested details call for.

How long does fire rated sealant take?

Typically it takes a few hours for a handful of gaps, and longer for a whole building. Larger jobs naturally take longer, and we will say how long yours will take.

Can you fill the gap behind a fire door frame?

Yes. We seal the gap between the frame and the wall with a suitable fire-rated product following the tested details. The door, its seals and closer are for a door specialist.

Can you do several jobs on one visit?

Yes, and it often makes sense. Doing several areas at once is usually more efficient, so mention them when you ask for a quote.

Do the sealants smell?

Possibly a little. Any smell clears as the sealant cures, and ventilation helps.

I’m a tenant. Can you help?

We’re happy to deal with the tenant, landlord or agent. Get your landlord’s agreement first.

What we can’t put right

Before booking, it’s worth knowing the limits:

  • Certifying a building or signing off its fire safety
  • Walls or floors that weren’t built to resist fire
  • Openings too large for sealant, which need batts, boards or another system

If you are not sure, just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Why act early in Alva

Squirting in whichever sealant is nearest doesn’t make a fire seal. Fire-rated products are tested in set gap sizes, depths and substrates, so both the product and the method matter. In an older home around Alva, damp from a failed joint can get into timber and plaster.

Every job is a little different, so each one gets its own quote. Size, access and the product the joint needs all play a part.

DIY versus a professional finish

If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.
