External mastic for homes and businesses in Palnure
We’re ARBOMaster approved applicators, and each external joint gets a sealant suited to it. Some surfaces need a primer before sealing. We work on brickwork movement joints, façade panels and copings & trims, and people most often call us about plants rooting in failed movement joints and old sealant gone brittle and cracked.
Across smaller places in Scotland, stone and harled cottages, farm buildings and newer houses often stand exposed to wind and rain. Gutter joints and wall joints take a battering, so they need a sealant that moves with the building.
A 12-month guarantee comes with the work, just as it does everywhere we cover.

Different surfaces, different methods
Copings and trims
Coping and trim joints face rain and sun head on. We reseal them with an exterior sealant suited to the material.
Cladding and façade panels
Panels heat up and cool down quickly, so the joint sealant has to cope with frequent movement. The sealant is chosen with that in mind.
Aftercare tips
No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. A few tips:
- Keep high-pressure jets off the joints
- Never let anyone fill a movement joint with mortar
- Fix overflowing gutters above sealed joints
- Ask before painting over external sealant
Follow the cure time we give you before the joint is knocked or disturbed. The surface skins over quickly, but full cure takes longer.
Gaps, plants or missing sealant in a joint are worth getting looked at. Earlier resealing means a smaller job and a better result.
Common problems we fix in Palnure
The wrong product in a moving joint is a classic cause. A high-modulus or general-purpose sealant can be too rigid for a busy joint, so it pulls away from the edges.
These are the problems we’re asked about most:
- Rigid filler in a joint that should flex
- Hard, crazed mastic that has stopped moving
- Sealant that has lost its bond to the brick or render
- Movement joints with cracked, split or missing sealant
In and around Palnure, as anywhere, good external mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Your questions about external mastic in Palnure
Do you cover Palnure for external mastic?
Yes, Palnure is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing.
Does the coastal weather in Palnure affect outside sealant?
Coastal homes put outside sealant through more weather than inland ones, so preparation and the right sealant matter all the more. Walls facing the sea are normally the first to need attention.
How long does external mastic take?
It depends on the size of the job, but most jobs take a few hours for a handful of joints, longer for a whole elevation. We will tell you when we quote.
Are you fully insured?
Yes. Mr Mastic is fully insured, and we have been doing sealant work for more than 20 years.
How long should I leave it?
It depends on the product and the temperature. Before we leave, we will tell you the cure time.
Which products do you use?
The product depends on the job: sanitary silicone where it gets wet, and sealants suited to movement or weather elsewhere. We use products from Arbo and Everbuild.
Can you quote for more than one area?
Yes, and it often makes sense. Combining jobs makes good use of the visit.
Should I try DIY first?
Sometimes. Preparation is everything: all the old sealant out, and a clean, dry joint. If it does not work out, we can redo it.

What external mastic looks like in Palnure
Palnure is close to the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. Both are hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Harled (roughcast) walls are common in Scotland, and joints where harling meets other materials need a sealant that can grip and flex.
Whether the job is in Palnure itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.

What sealant work can’t fix
A few problems are outside what sealant work can do:
- Walls that need new movement joints cut into them
- Render that’s blown, hollow or coming away
- Movement that’s more than a sealant joint can take
Not sure which it is? You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly.
What we seal
- Brickwork movement joints
- Façade panels
- Copings & trims
- Joints between brick and frames
- Render & cladding joints
- Concrete & block
Should I try it myself first?
If you’ve already had a go yourself, that’s fine. We cut it out and start again, so just mention it when you contact us.
The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.
How it works
You don’t need to clear the whole room or building, only the area right around the joints. Everything nearby is protected, and the job takes a few hours for a handful of joints, longer for a whole elevation for a typical job. Somewhere like Palnure may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.
- We look at every joint and agree a colour to suit the wall.
- Failed sealant is removed back to clean, sound faces.
- Backing rod goes in so the sealant can stretch between the two faces.
- Primer is applied wherever the sealant needs it.
- We gun in low-modulus sealant and tool it neatly.
