External Mastic in Nigg
Problem with your movement joints in Nigg? We remove the old material, prepare the joints and seal them properly.
- Plants rooting in failed movement joints
- Leaking joints around cladding and façade panels
- Joints with sealant missing in places
External mastic in Nigg, done properly
For buildings in Nigg, we reseal external joints of all kinds, from brick movement joints to cladding panels. Every joint gets the same careful preparation: clean joint faces and the right depth. We work on brickwork movement joints, concrete & block and joints between brick and frames, and people most often call us about weeds or debris growing in open joints and failed seals between different materials.
External sealant needs dry surfaces, so outdoor work around Nigg is planned around the weather. Let us know about access to every wall and roofline.
You’re covered for a year from the day we finish. If anything is not right with it, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

What affects the quote in Nigg
The price is agreed before any work begins. It takes into account:
- Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
- The size of the job
- How easy the joints are to reach
- The number of rooms or windows
Some things make a job bigger or smaller: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, any mould to treat, and whether the work is at height. Your quote takes all of that into account.
What we need to know
When you call or email, it’s useful to know:
- Where the job is, and your postcode
- Whether it has been sealed before
- The problem you’ve noticed
- Roughly how big the job is
Asking for a quote is easy: let us know what needs doing and where and its rough size. A few photos by email make the job easier to understand, and we will come back to you with a quote.

Nigg: your questions answered
Does living near the coast affect external mastic in Nigg?
Coastal homes put outside sealant through more weather than inland ones, so the choice of sealant and the preparation matter even more. Walls facing the sea are generally the first to need attention.
Is Nigg within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Do you do commercial work?
Yes. We work in offices, washrooms, hotels and other commercial premises, as well as homes. We can talk about working times when we quote.
How often do external joints need resealing?
That depends on the wall, the weather and the movement. Signs to watch for are cracking, hardening and gaps at the edges and have them redone then.
Do you seal joints where cladding meets other materials?
Yes. Different materials move at different rates, so the joint between them must be flexible. The sealant is matched to both sides.
Where do you work from?
We work from Crawley. We cover Nigg and the rest of Highland, along with the rest of our area.
Why is there a gap in my brick wall?
Walls move with heat, cold and moisture, so long walls have planned gaps to take that movement. The gap is sealed with a flexible sealant over backing rod.
Do I need to be at home?
We need access to the joints, so we’ll agree that with you when we book. For inside work, that normally means someone being in.

Businesses can book us for washrooms, kitchens, offices and more. For commercial premises, we can talk through working times when we quote.
What the job involves on each surface
Joints between dissimilar materials
Different materials may need different primers. We prepare both faces so the sealant bonds properly.
Concrete and blockwork
Big joints in concrete need careful depth control. We size the backing rod to the gap and keep the sealant to the right depth.
What external mastic looks like in Nigg
Nigg is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. Both are hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Private landlords in Scotland must meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping a home wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that.
For landlords with property near Fearn station, outside joints that have cracked can let damp into a rental, so check them between lets. Homes close to Church of Scotland Parish Church include some older properties, and older walls, gutters and the joints where extensions meet them need a flexible sealant.

Why act early in Nigg
A failed movement joint lets water into the wall, behind render and cladding. Resealing early keeps the job to the joint itself, instead of the wall and finishes around it. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.
No two jobs are quite the same, so we quote each one individually. Size, access and the product the joint needs all make a difference, and we’ll explain the quote if you ask.
Why book with us
- You choose the colour before work begins
- White, clear, grey or coloured to suit, where the product allows
- 20+ years of sealant experience
- Sanitary silicone with an anti-fungal additive in wet areas
What we do, step by step
Every visit runs the same way: we look at the joints together, mask and protect the surrounding surfaces, carry out the job and clear up. Most jobs take anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building. Somewhere like Nigg may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.
- First we look over the joints with you, agree which to renew and talk through access.
- We cut out the failed sealant and rake out any dirt or growth.
- Both sides are cleaned back to sound material and primed if needed.
- Backing rod goes in next, setting the depth and keeping the sealant off the back of the joint.
- The new sealant, chosen to suit the brick or render, is applied and tooled to a neat finish.
Before we arrive
- Mention any tricky access
- Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises
- Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive
Getting a quote
A good description makes for an accurate quote. Let us know the location, the problem and roughly how many joints.
Advice
When it is not the sealant
Before you book, it’s worth knowing the limits too:
- Cracks in the bricks or render themselves, away from the joints
- Walls that need new movement joints cut into them
- Rising or penetrating damp from elsewhere in the wall
Not sure which it is? You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.
Surfaces we seal
- Copings & trims
- Brickwork movement joints
- Concrete & block
- Render & cladding joints
- Joints between brick and frames
- Façade panels
Looking after it afterwards
Aftercare is simple, and it makes a real difference:
- Do not let climbing plants root in the sealant
- Fix overflowing gutters above sealed joints
- Walk round the building once a year and look at the joints
- Point out the joints to other trades
Follow the cure time we give you before the joint is knocked or disturbed. The surface skins over quickly, but full cure takes longer.
Gaps, plants or missing sealant in a joint are worth getting looked at. Earlier resealing means a smaller job and a better result.
