About our external mastic in Laurencekirk

Getting the depth right is half the job. Backing rod controls how deep the sealant goes and keeps it off the back of the joint, so it bonds to the two sides only and can stretch. Typical jobs include hard, crazed mastic that has stopped moving and cracked joints where brick meets render or frames, on render & cladding joints, façade panels and concrete & block.

External sealant needs dry surfaces, so outdoor work around Laurencekirk is planned around the weather. Let us know about access to every wall and roofline.

Every job comes with our 12-month guarantee.

Leave it or put it right?

Pointing a movement joint with mortar might seem a neat fix, but it stops the joint moving. The movement then cracks the brickwork or render nearby. The correct repair is a flexible sealant with the right backing. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.

We don’t show prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a quick quote, please send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

How to look after the new joints

Simple care keeps the joints in good condition. We recommend:

  • Show decorators and builders where the movement joints are
  • Ask before painting over external sealant
  • Make sure movement joints are not pointed over
  • Deal with leaking gutters that soak the joints below

Give the sealant the cure time we tell you before anything rubs against it. The surface skins over quickly, but full cure takes longer.

If you can see gaps, plants or bare sections in a joint, have it checked. Earlier resealing means a smaller job and a better result.

When something else is needed

To be straight with you, some problems need a different trade:

  • Render that’s blown, hollow or coming away
  • Cracked brickwork or render that needs a builder or plasterer
  • Rising or penetrating damp from elsewhere in the wall

If you are not sure, just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you a straight answer before you book.

What the job involves on each surface

Joints between dissimilar materials

Wherever two materials meet, they move differently. We seal the joint with a flexible exterior sealant.

Render joints

Cracks along render joints let water in behind the coat. Resealing the joints early keeps water out.

What we do, step by step

Once we are on site, we check the joints match what you told us. If we find something unexpected, we talk it through with you first. Most jobs then take a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access. In smaller Scottish places, parking is normally less of an issue than access and distance. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. First, the joints are inspected and the access agreed.
  2. Every bit of old sealant and any mortar or debris is cut out.
  3. Joint faces are cleaned back and primed if the sealant needs it.
  4. We fit closed-cell backing rod to control the depth.
  5. The exterior sealant is applied, tooled and checked along its length.

Before we arrive

Should I try it myself first?

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. Everything old must be removed first.

Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, such as a straightforward joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.

What external mastic looks like in Laurencekirk

Plenty of Scottish homes have harled walls, and joints where harling meets other materials need a sealant that can grip and flex. Private landlords in Scotland must meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping a home wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that.

Letting a property close to Laurencekirk station? Then failed wall and movement joints let damp in, so they’re worth checking between tenancies. If you look after a building such as Mearns Academy, larger buildings have long runs of movement joint that eventually need resealing. For an older house near a landmark such as Laurencekirk, an extension built onto an older house moves differently, and the joint between them takes the strain.
