Bathroom resealing in Jury's Gap, done properly

It is not only bathrooms. The joint between worktop and wall, the edge of the sink and the bottom of the splashback get wet every single day, and water that gets into the back edge of a worktop can swell the board. Kitchen joints get a sealant suited to kitchens, colour-matched where it shows. We are often asked to deal with water getting behind the bath panel and splits where the tray meets the wall, across baths, sinks & splashbacks and kitchen worktops & upstands.

Homes around Jury's Gap are mostly houses and cottages rather than flats. Sealant and grout wear out here just as they do anywhere: everything old comes out before the new sealant or grout goes in.

The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If something is not right with it in that time, tell us and we will put it right.

When something else is needed

It helps to know what we cannot do too:

  • Loose or hollow tiles, or failed tanking behind them
  • A tray that rocks until it’s re-bedded
  • Failed grout lines across the wall

If in doubt, phone 0345 464 0079 or email us and we’ll say what we think.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Basins & vanity units
  • Wet rooms
  • Sinks & splashbacks
  • Baths
  • Kitchen worktops & upstands
  • Shower trays & enclosures

How the job changes by surface

Baths

Baths move more than any other fitting, so it’s filled with water before the bead goes on. That way the joint is laid with the bath at its heaviest and is not torn the first time it’s used.

Basins & vanity units

A vanity top has a joint along the wall and sometimes at the sides. If water gets in, the cabinet underneath can swell, so the joint is sealed in one unbroken line.

Aftercare tips

Looking after new joints is easy:

  • Do not let bottles sit on the bead
  • Run the extractor fan during and after every shower
  • Avoid abrasive pads on the sealant
  • Dry the bead with a towel now and then

Keep bottles and razors off the sealant line, as they hold water against it. A quick squeegee after showering keeps water from sitting on the joint.

Mould that starts as a few spots spreads through the bead. When it has grown right through, it rarely cleans out, and nearby grout often goes the same way. Catching it early keeps it a simple reseal.

What happens on the day

Good joint work is mostly preparation, so that is where we spend the time. Joints are cleaned back and dried before anything new goes in. All told, the work takes a morning or an afternoon for most single baths and showers. In a small place like Jury's Gap, access is normally the main thing to plan. If the job is outside, mention outbuildings, exposed walls and how to reach them.

  1. We protect the area and cut out all of the old sealant.
  2. We clean and degrease the joint and treat any mould.
  3. Once it’s dry, any bath is filled so the bead is laid with it at its heaviest.
  4. New anti-fungal silicone goes on in a colour to suit and is tooled to a clean finish.
  5. We tidy up and give you the cure time, generally around 24 hours.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything stored near the joints
  • On commercial sites, let us know about site rules
  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit

DIY sealant or a professional job?

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and doesn’t move well, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

What we are called out for in Jury's Gap

Silicone needs a clean, dry surface without any grease to stick to. Soap residue, oils and leftover silicone film all get in the way, so a rushed job can start to lift early.

If you can see any of these, it’s time to have the joints looked at:

  • Shrunken sealant along the back of a worktop
  • Mouldy sealant that has gone black
  • A reseal done over the top of the old bead
  • A messy, uneven bead from a previous reseal

In and around Jury's Gap, as anywhere, good bathroom resealing starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

What your quote should include

  • What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
  • Which colour the sealant will be
  • What preparation is included
  • Whether the sealant suits the joint

Jury's Gap is within about 1 mile of the coast. Coastal homes, holiday lets and guest houses can see heavy bathroom use in busy months, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Hard water is the norm across most of the South East, so limescale builds up on sealant, grout and fittings, and it has to be cleaned off before new sealant goes in.

Are you insured?

Yes. Mr Mastic is fully insured, and we have been doing sealant work for more than 20 years.

Do I need to be at home?

It depends on the job. Inside work needs someone to give us access, and for outside work we will agree access with you when we book.
