Why it’s worth doing now in Galltair

Sorting it now is quick: it takes a couple of hours for a single bath or shower. Left until water gets through, the job can grow to lifting panels, drying out and decorating. In a place like Galltair, small leaks are easy to put off, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.

A few things move the cost up or down: the old material and how easily it comes out, whether mould needs treating, and whether we need extra access for height. We take all of that into account in your quote.

How we handle bathroom resealing in Galltair

The bead of silicone around a bath, tray or worktop is what keeps water out of the gaps. When it splits, shrinks or turns black, water gets behind it. Every trace of the old sealant is taken out and replaced with anti-fungal sanitary silicone. Typical jobs include new sealant laid over old sealant that is now lifting and water getting behind the bath panel, on baths, shower trays & enclosures and kitchen worktops & upstands.

Bathrooms in smaller places like Galltair work just as hard as those in the cities. Limescale is less of a problem with Scotland’s generally soft water, but mould still takes hold in damp sealant and grout.

We stand behind the work with a 12-month guarantee, so you’re not left on your own once the job is done.

Questions from Galltair

What guarantee comes with bathroom resealing in Galltair?

Every job comes with our 12-month guarantee, wherever it is. We are also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.

Is Galltair within the area you cover?

Yes. Galltair is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Will it make a mess?

No. We work neatly, protect the area around the joints and tidy up afterwards.

How long does a bath or shower reseal take?

It depends on how many joints there are and how much old sealant has to come out. For most single baths or showers, allow a couple of hours.

Can landlords and businesses book you?

Yes, we do. We work in homes, commercial premises and hotels, and we’re fully insured.

Where is Mr Mastic based?

Mr Mastic is based in Crawley. We cover Galltair and the rest of Highland.

Do I need to be at home?

For indoor joints, yes, someone needs to let us in. Once we have agreed the job, you don’t need to watch us work.

I rent my home. Can I book you?

We can work for tenants, landlords or agents. Get your landlord’s agreement first.

What we do, step by step

There’s no need to move everything out, just the space around the work. We protect the rest, and the work takes a couple of hours for one bath or shower, or most of a day for a full bathroom and kitchen in most cases. For a place like Galltair, longer drives are planned in advance. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. We look at every joint first and check for movement or leaks.
  2. Every trace of the old bead is removed, including the thin smear on the tiles.
  3. Joints are degreased and any mould is treated.
  4. With the joint dry, and any bath loaded with water, a single bead of anti-fungal silicone is applied.
  5. The bead is tooled smooth and you are told the cure time, generally around 24 hours.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us if parking is tricky
  • Clear items away from the joints we’re working on
  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before

Keeping the joints in good condition

So the new joints stay in good condition:

  • Don’t leave water standing on kitchen joints
  • Dry the bead with a towel now and then
  • Wait for the cure time we give you
  • Use gentle cleaners on the silicone

Wipe up standing water along the worktop joint and keep hot pans off the bead. The drier the joint stays, the longer it lasts.

Mould that starts as a few spots spreads through the bead. When it has grown right through, it rarely cleans out. Catching it early keeps it a simple reseal.

What we are called out for in Galltair

Mould is the reason many people want their sealant replaced. Steamy rooms that do not dry out keep the silicone damp for hours, and mould that has grown into the silicone normally won’t clean off.

These are the problems we are asked about most:

  • Gaps where the bath or tray has moved
  • Two layers of silicone, both failing
  • A messy, uneven bead from a previous reseal
  • Black spots spreading through the bead

Managing a site like Bernera School? Then its toilets, changing areas and kitchens need their sealant renewed like any other building’s.

What bathroom resealing looks like in Galltair

Galltair is close to the coast. Coastal homes, holiday lets and guest houses can see heavy bathroom use in busy months, and sealant and grout that work that hard wear out sooner. Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black.

In and around Galltair, as anywhere, good bathroom resealing starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Different surfaces, different methods

Wet rooms

Wet rooms rely on sound joints at floor and wall junctions. They get anti-fungal sanitary silicone, working on the surface joints, not the tanking or drainage.

Basins & vanity units

Basins take less water than showers, but the joint behind them is splashed every day. Old sealant there often goes black at the corners, so it’s cut out and renewed just like a bath joint.

Work for landlords, hotels and businesses

We also work for property managers and facilities teams in Galltair and across Highland. We can quote a run of properties together, and we are fully insured.

If you manage several properties in or around Galltair, several properties can be quoted together. Just tell us the addresses and what each one needs.

DIY sealant or a professional job?

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.

Not every job suits DIY: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs call for the right materials, safe access and experience.
