Bathroom resealing in Gadebridge

Showers work their sealant harder than baths. Tray edges, screen profiles and wet room joints all rely on silicone to stay watertight. They’re resealed with anti-fungal sanitary silicone, finished smooth so water drains away rather than collecting. We are often asked to deal with splits where the tray meets the wall and leaking joints on a shower screen, on sinks & splashbacks, baths and wet rooms.

In a smaller place like Gadebridge, homes are mostly houses and bungalows rather than flats, some older and some much newer. Sealant and grout wear out here just as they do in a big town.

The work is covered for a year after we finish. If anything isn’t right with it, call 0345 464 0079 or email us.

Gadebridge questions

Should the sealant in an older Gadebridge home be renewed?

In most cases, yes, if it hasn’t been done for a while. Sealant is a maintenance item: how long it lasts depends on use, cleaning and exposure, and many homes in Gadebridge may already be on their second or third set.

Do you work for landlords with property near Hemel Hempstead station?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for, and several properties can be quoted together. You can ring 0345 464 0079 or send us an email with the details for a clear quote.

Do you work in Gadebridge?

Yes. We’re based in Crawley and work across South East England, London and Scotland.

Is it messy?

Very little: the area around the joints is protected first, and we tidy up before we go.

Do you remove the old sealant?

Always. Sealing over old sealant is the main reason resealing fails early, and it’s something we never do.

Do you reseal kitchen worktops and sinks too?

Yes. The old sealant is cut out and the joint degreased, because cooking grease stops silicone sticking, then we reseal in a colour to suit.

Are you ARBOMaster approved?

Yes. We hold ARBOMaster approved applicator status, and we are fully insured.

Do you work for hotels and businesses?

Yes. We can plan bigger jobs in stages.

Should I try it myself first?

If you’re set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, such as a straightforward joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.

How it works

At the end, we look at the finished work together and explain the cure time. The visit itself usually takes around two hours for one bath or shower, longer for a whole bathroom, depending on how much there is to do. In a smaller place like Gadebridge, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. For outside work, side access and the height of the joints help us plan.

  1. We look at every joint first and check for movement or leaks.
  2. The old silicone is cut out completely, along with the film it leaves on the tiles.
  3. The joint is cleaned, degreased and treated for mould.
  4. When the joint is dry, and a bath has been filled with water, the new silicone goes on.
  5. The bead is tooled smooth and you are told the cure time, usually around 24 hours.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts
  • For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in
  • Move anything stored near the joints

When it isn’t the sealant

We’ll always be straight with you, so here’s what sealant cannot fix:

  • A tray that rocks until it’s re-bedded
  • Tiles that have come away from the wall
  • Leaks from a shower valve, waste or pipework (a plumber’s job)

If you are not sure, just call 0345 464 0079 or email us and we will give you a straight answer.

Gadebridge homes and their sealant

Gadebridge is part of Hemel Hempstead, one of the post-war new towns. Many homes date from the post-war decades, so bathrooms and kitchens may be on their second or third set of sealant. Sealant laid over old sealant never bonds properly, so it all has to come out. Most of the South East has hard water, which leaves limescale on sealant, grout and fittings.

If you look after a building such as Galley Hill Primary School and Nursery, its toilets, changing areas and kitchens need their sealant renewed like any other building’s. In the older streets around St Alban's Church, bathrooms in older houses have often been refitted more than once, with sealant laid over sealant.

How to look after the new joints

Simple care keeps the joints in good condition. We recommend:

  • Never pick at the silicone with a blade
  • Keep bottles off the sealant line
  • Keep the fan on for a while after bathing
  • Dry the bead with a towel now and then

Mould needs damp, so keep the room aired. Run the extractor fan during and after a shower, so the bead dries out between uses.

Watch for the early signs: lifting ends, gaps, dark shadows under the bead or a stain downstairs. Any of these means the joint needs attention.

When to call us in Gadebridge

With age, silicone loses its stretch. Along worktops it tends to pull back from the wall, leaving a thin gap where water and food collect. Hot pans and harsh cleaners don’t help.

These are the problems we are asked about most:

  • New sealant laid over old sealant that is now lifting
  • Water getting behind the kitchen upstand
  • A joint torn by a bath that flexes
  • A bead that has pulled away from the tiles

Letting a property close to Hemel Hempstead station? Then fresh sealant around the bath, shower and sink between tenancies helps a property present well and keeps leaks at bay.

Choosing a sealant specialist

Leave it or put it right?

Sorting it now is quick: it takes a morning or an afternoon for most single baths and showers. Wait for a leak and you may be looking at panels off, drying out and redecorating too. Around Gadebridge, water from a failed joint in an older home can soak into timber and plaster, and that’s a much bigger job than renewing the sealant.

Rather than a set price list, we price the job in front of us: how many joints, what’s in them now and how we reach them. The price is agreed before we begin.

What you get with us

  • Colour agreed with you before any work starts
  • White, clear, grey or coloured to suit, where the product allows
  • We never seal over old sealant
  • Experience in homes, commercial sites and hotels

Different surfaces, different methods

Baths

Acrylic baths flex the most, while steel and cast iron baths move less but still settle when full. Filling the bath first allows for that movement.

Wet rooms

If a wet room leaks, the cause may be the tanking or the drain rather than the joints. We reseal the joints and will tell you if the water seems to be coming from somewhere else.
