When to call us in Currie

Silicone needs a clean, dry surface without any grease to stick to. Traces of soap, bath oil and old sealant stop it gripping, so a rushed job can start to lift early.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • A joint torn by a bath that flexes
  • Leaks into the floor or ceiling below
  • A reseal done over the top of the old bead
  • Water getting behind the kitchen upstand

Schools such as Currie High School are buildings too, and we reseal washrooms and kitchens in schools and businesses as well as homes.

What to look for in a quote

  • When the joint can take water or movement
  • What insurance they hold
  • Is VAT in the price?
  • Whether all the old sealant comes out first

Choosing a sealant specialist

Bathroom resealing in Currie, done properly

A fresh bead of silicone changes how a bathroom looks more than most people expect. Black, patchy sealant makes clean tiles look tired, and a clean white or clear joint fixes it quickly. Just as important, it closes the gaps water would otherwise get through. Common call-outs are for black mould in the silicone that won’t clean off and water getting behind the bath panel, on sinks & splashbacks, baths and wet rooms.

A bathroom in a place like Currie gets the same daily wear as one in a city flat. Generally soft Scottish water means less limescale, but steam still lets mould into sealant and grout.

You get a one-year guarantee, the same in Currie as everywhere else we work.

Currie questions

Do you work for landlords with property near Curriehill station?

Yes, rental work is part of what we do. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us about the property, and we’ll give you a clear price.

Do you cover Currie for bathroom resealing?

Yes, Currie is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job.

Will it make a mess?

Very little: the area around the joints is protected first, and we clear up the old sealant and our materials before we leave.

What information do you need?

Where the job is, what the problem is and roughly how big it is. Photos by email help too.

Are you an approved applicator?

Yes. We hold ARBOMaster approved applicator status and we are fully insured too.

Where are you based?

Mr Mastic is based in Crawley. We cover Currie and the rest of Edinburgh.

How long does the new silicone need before I use the shower?

After around 24 hours in most cases. We’ll tell you the cure time for the product we used.

My sealant has gone black. Can you sort it?

Yes. Once mould has grown into the silicone, it generally cannot be cleaned out for good, so we cut it out, treat the joint and reseal with anti-fungal silicone.

The process

Before we leave, we go over the finished joints with you. The visit itself generally takes around two hours for one bath or shower, longer for a whole bathroom, depending on the amount of work. Outside jobs in Currie need a dry day, because sealant will not bond to a wet joint, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Work indoors isn’t affected.

  1. We look at every joint first and check for movement or leaks.
  2. Every trace of the old bead is removed, including the thin smear on the tiles.
  3. Joints are degreased and any mould is treated.
  4. With the joint dry, and any bath loaded with water, a single bead of anti-fungal silicone is applied.
  5. We tool the bead to a neat finish and give you the cure time, generally around 24 hours.

How to prepare

  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
  • Tell us about access, such as stairs, a lift or high-level joints
  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before

Advice

Bathroom resealing around Currie

Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black. In Scotland, private landlords have to meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping fixtures and fittings in reasonable repair. Failed sealant around a bath or shower is worth sorting between tenancies.

Homes close to Currie Kirk include some older properties, and bathrooms in older houses have often been refitted more than once, with sealant laid over sealant. Letting a property close to Curriehill station? Then a reseal between tenants is a quick way to make the bathroom and kitchen look cared for.

Keeping the joints in good condition

Good habits help new joints last longer. A few tips:

  • Keep an eye on the corners, where splits start
  • Wipe the sealant dry after showering
  • Wipe up water along the back of the worktop
  • Never pick at the silicone with a blade

Mould needs damp, so keep the room aired. Use the fan, or open a window, while you bathe and for a while afterwards, so the bead dries out between uses.

Each shower pushes a little more water through a failed joint. Over time that water reaches floors, walls and ceilings. Resealing early stops it.

DIY sealant or a professional job?

If you’ve already had a go yourself, that’s fine. We remove it and do the joint properly, so tell us about it when you ask for a quote.

If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

What affects the quote in Currie

Jobs vary more than people expect. The main factors:

  • Working hours on commercial sites
  • Whether there’s mould to deal with
  • The size of the job
  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved

Leaving a failed joint usually makes the job bigger, not smaller, as water and mould keep getting in. If you are not sure whether it needs doing, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you an honest view and a quote.

Helping us quote

Before you ask for a quote, have a think about:

  • Access, such as stairs, a lift or height
  • If someone has resealed it before
  • The address or postcode of the job
  • Whether it’s a home or a business

Quotes start with a quick conversation. Tell us what’s wrong, where it is and how much there is. Whenever you’re ready, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

What sealant work cannot fix

We will not take on work that will not last, so here’s what sealant can’t put right:

  • A cracked shower tray or bath (that needs repair or replacement)
  • Leaks from a shower valve, waste or pipework (a plumber’s job)
  • Damage behind the tiles that needs a tiler

If in doubt, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Kitchen worktops & upstands
  • Baths
  • Shower trays & enclosures
  • Sinks & splashbacks
  • Wet rooms
  • Basins & vanity units

Why act early in Currie

A clean new bead makes a room look cared for, which matters if you’re letting a property or selling it. A smeared, uneven DIY bead does the opposite, and it’s harder to put right later. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.

Every job is a little different, so each one gets its own quote. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all play a part, and we will explain the quote if you ask.
