Fire rated sealant in Currie, done properly

Door frame gaps, linear joints and holes around services all have their own details. We check the size and the substrate before choosing the product, then apply it to the depth its tested detail calls for. If you have damaged fire sealant left by other trades and joints picked up in a fire-stopping survey, we can put it right.

In a smaller place like Currie, commercial jobs are more likely to be a hotel, guest house, school, surgery or community hall than an office block. Each needs sound sealant in its washrooms and kitchens, and fire-rated joints kept in good order.

All our work is covered by our one-year guarantee.

Should I try it myself first?

Some jobs are best left to a professional: work at height, external movement joints, fire-rated sealant and large areas call for the right materials, safe access and experience.

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it does not work out, we can still put it right.

What we do, step by step

On the day, we look over the joints with you first. Surfaces next to the work are protected before work begins. The work normally takes anything from a few hours to several days, depending on how many gaps there are. In smaller Scottish places, parking is normally less of an issue than access and distance. Tell us how to find the property and how to reach the work, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. Access to each area is agreed so the work can run in order.
  2. We take out any damaged or unsuitable sealant.
  3. Gaps are cleaned of dust and loose material.
  4. The fire-rated or intumescent sealant is applied and tooled to the tested detail.
  5. Locations and products are written up and any gaps unsuitable for sealant are flagged.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know about parking restrictions
  • On commercial sites, let us know about site rules
  • Keep pets and children clear of the area while we work

Commercial buildings in Currie

In Scotland, building work comes under the Building (Scotland) Regulations and their technical handbooks. Fire-rated sealant is installed to the manufacturer’s tested details, though we do not certify buildings or do fire risk assessments.

Letting a property close to Curriehill station? Then any gap left by new services in shared walls should be closed with a fire-rated product. For buildings such as Currie Kirk, gaps around pipes and cables are worth checking after any building work there.

Quotes for fire rated sealant in Currie

Your quote is based on your job. We take into account:

  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
  • The product the joint needs
  • Whether there’s mould to deal with
  • When we can work, for business premises

What it costs depends on the amount of work, how much old material has to come out and access to the work. You’ll have a clear quote before any work starts, so you know where you stand.

What we need to know

To make quoting easier, please include:

  • Access, such as stairs, a lift or height
  • Pictures of the joints, sent by email
  • How many joints, rooms or windows are involved
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work

For a quick quote, get us on the phone, or email us if that’s easier. Describe what needs sealing and we’ll explain what’s involved before giving you a price.

What the job involves on each surface

Door frames

A door can only do its job if the gap behind its frame is sealed too. We fill it with a fire-rated product suited to the materials either side.

Masonry and concrete

Holes through concrete and block are rarely neat. We check the gap size around the service to make sure it suits the product.

Keeping the joints in good condition

A little care helps the new joints last. We recommend:

  • Do not paint over fire sealant until it has cured
  • Get damaged fire seals looked at promptly
  • Look in service cupboards and ceiling voids from time to time
  • Keep general-purpose foam and caulk away from fire-stopping gaps

Leave the sealant to cure fully before painting near it. Some fire-rated sealants can be painted and some can’t and we’ll tell you which one you have.

If a fire risk assessment has flagged a gap, don’t leave it for the next one. Get it sealed and recorded so you can show it was dealt with.

Why act early in Currie

A quick fill with any sealant to hand is not fire stopping. A fire-rated product only performs as tested when it’s installed to its tested detail, so both the product and the method matter. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.

Leaving a failed joint normally makes the job bigger, not smaller, as water and mould keep getting in. If you are not sure whether it needs doing, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

Do you need fire rated sealant in Currie?

A lot of fire stopping is out of sight: in ceiling voids, service risers and behind boxing. Out of view, damage sits unnoticed until someone inspects.

The problems people generally mention when they call include:

  • Fire stopping disturbed by later work
  • Old fire sealant that has split or come away
  • Gaps around pipes and cables through fire-resisting walls
  • Standard silicone or caulk in a fire-stopping gap

If you look after a building such as Currie High School, fire-stopping around service openings should be restored whenever new services go in.

Questions to ask before you book

  • How the colour is chosen
  • How long to leave it before use
  • Whether they seal over old material or remove it
  • How hidden problems are handled

Currie questions

Do Scottish building rules affect fire-rated sealant work in Currie?

Building work in Scotland comes under the Building (Scotland) Regulations and their technical handbooks. Fire-rated sealant has to go in to the product’s tested details, and we follow them. We do not certify buildings or carry out fire risk assessments, so your fire risk assessor or building control will advise on what’s needed.

Do you work for landlords with property near Curriehill station?

Yes, rental work is part of what we do. Just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us about the property, and we will send you a clear quote.

Is it OK to seal over old sealant?

No. Fresh sealant does not stick to old sealant, and anything trapped underneath, including mould and water, stays there. It all has to come out first.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes, always. Each job is guaranteed for twelve months.

Where is Mr Mastic based?

We’re a Crawley-based firm, with over 20 years’ experience. We work across South East England, London and Scotland.

How much does fire rated sealant cost in Currie?

Size, access and the old material all affect the cost. Call for a quick quote.

Can I add another job to the visit?

Yes. Just list everything you need and we will quote it together.

Will the old sealant be removed?

Yes, always, and completely. New sealant will not bond properly to old, so any old material comes out before anything new goes in.
